This month at the Balmoral Early Learning Centre We are now well into Spring as it is nearing the end of October, however the rain has not stopped! While the rain has been pouring outside most days, the children have been busy bees inside making the most of being able to use our wonderful “wet weather board games” such as the shopping list game, two by two memory game and even twister! There has also been lots of quality craft making going on in the Balmoral Early Learning Centre as the children made some beautiful butterflies, worms and flowers for our big Spring display. As the children are very fond of play dough I decided to wet some clay for the children to experience different textures and to build on their fine motor skills. At first they weren’t very interested but once Miss Lana sat down with them and showed them her lovely pottery skills the children were intrigued and played with the clay for a long period of time, even asking to play with it again the following week. The children are also very interested in building cubby houses as we have recently found out. We have made many indoor cubby houses out of climbing frame equipment and blankets, tables, sheets, and an outdoor cubby house built from wooden boxes and curtains. The chil- dren love hiding in their hand built cubby houses and it is a great group activity, encouraging them to all work cooperatively together. There has also been a big sensory tray inside filled with birdseed, funnels, scoops and water wheels. The children have been very engaged in the birdseed sensory tray, which has been another experience to encourage group participation and cooperation. I would just like to thank the Balmoral Op Shop for donating some lovely John Deere tractors and headers for the children to play with. They have been a massive hit, and are played with all day every day that we open! Thanks guys! We have now started discussing numbers for 2017 so if you would like to enquire about a position for your child, please contact me. This month at the

Balmoral Early

Learning Centre We are now well into Spring as it is nearing the end of October,

however the rain has not stopped! While the rain has been pouring

outside most days, the children have been busy bees inside making

the most of being able to use our wonderful “wet weather board

games” such as the shopping list game, two by two memory game

and even twister! There has also been lots of quality craft making

going on in the Balmoral Early Learning Centre as the children made

some beautiful butterflies, worms and flowers for our big Spring display.

As the children are very fond of play dough I decided to wet some

clay for the children to experience different textures and to build on

their fine motor skills. At first they weren’t very interested but once Miss

Lana sat down with them and showed them her lovely pottery skills the

children were intrigued and played with the clay for a long period of

time, even asking to play with it again the following week.

The children are also very interested in building cubby houses as we

have recently found out. We have made many indoor cubby houses

out of climbing frame equipment and blankets, tables, sheets, and an

outdoor cubby house built from wooden boxes and curtains. The chil-

dren love hiding in their hand built cubby houses and it is a great

group activity, encouraging them to all work cooperatively together.

There has also been a big sensory tray inside filled with birdseed,

funnels, scoops and water wheels. The children have been very

engaged in the birdseed sensory tray, which has been another

experience to encourage group participation and cooperation.

I would just like to thank the Balmoral Op Shop for donating some

lovely John Deere tractors and headers for the children to play with.

They have been a massive hit, and are played with all day every day

that we open! Thanks guys!

We have now started discussing numbers for 2017 so if you would like

to enquire about a position for your child, please contact me.

Planned Activity Group Our annual trip away was 3 great days filled with lots to see and do. All

aboard bags packed we headed to Ararat for lunch and visited the local art

gallery before having a guided tour around Ararat. This took us up and down

streets, out to Green Lake, up to the One Tree Hill Look Out, which is a must

for everyone that goes to Ararat as from there the view was just amazing. It

offers unparalleled views over the surrounding landscape. Then it was onto

Maryborough, after settling into Wattle Grove Motel we were ready for our

evening meal at the Maryborough Highland Society Pipes Bistro.

Next morning we were ready for the day ahead, first stop was the

Information Centre to meet our guide for the day, Steve. Steve talked the

talk all day as he explained and directed us around Maryborough and

surrounding district, giving a living history report on buildings and places of

interest, what a day we went everywhere. Back to motel before getting

ready to go out again for an evening meal at the Chinese Restaurant this

was another great meal. Wednesday ready for home via Avoca for lunch

then Arthur took on the role as our guide and directed us via this road and

that until we arrived on to the highway near Dadswell Bridge. Our last stop

was at the Big Koala for an ice cream before we arrived home in Balmoral, a

great time had by all.

Final of the footy tipping, big thank you to Bec for collecting and adding up

the scores each week. Congratulation to our winners 1st Laurel 2nd Len Equal

3rd Joy, Arthur, Ruth & Beth. Special thank you to Clare at the Balmoral Post

Office for sponsoring the Prizes for all our winners.

Down town shopping in Balmoral is always great to find a bargain, what an

afternoon everyone had shopping and buying a few more treasures to take

home. Thanks for the ladies at the Opportunity Shop for making us all feel so

welcome.

To celebrate Seniors Week, we used funding from the Southern Grampains

Shire to help with transport to Hamilton and Harrow to attend events. In

Hamilton we saw the Melbourne Cup exhibition at the Art Gallery, watched

the movie of the play War Horse and enjoyed a meal at the Thai Restaurant.

Our trip to “Pathways to Harrow” was another great day out.

We enjoyed a day at the Balmoral Golf Club, where we walked, we looked

and found lots of wild flowers everywhere.

Oral health: A window to your

overall health Did you know that your oral health offers clues about your overall health — or that

problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body? Protect yourself by learning more about the

connection between your oral health and overall health.

What's the connection between oral health and overall health?

Your mouth is teeming with bacteria — most of them harmless. Normally the body's natural defences

and good oral health care, such as daily brushing and flossing, can keep these bacteria under

control. However, without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral

infections, such as tooth decay and gum disease.

The mouth is often an entry point for infections, which may spread to other parts of the body and there

are associations between oral infections and heart and lung diseases, and diabetes.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene By:

Brush thoroughly twice a day

Flossing daily

Eating a balanced diet and limiting snacks between meals

Using dental products that contain fluoride, including toothpaste

Limit soft drinks, cordial & fruit juices

Limit sugary food

Protect your teeth from injury – wear a mouthguard when playing sports

See you dentist for regular checkups

Good oral hygiene means good health!

The National Shingles

Vaccination Program

A vaccine to prevent the shingles infection will

be available to 70-year-olds free

of charge from November this year.

A single catch up dose will be funded for 71 -79

year olds until 2021.

Shingles is a painful blistering rash caused by the

same virus that causes chickenpox.

As a person gets older the risk of developing

shingles and complications increases.

One in three people will develop shingles in their

lifetime.

Vaccination is still recommended for those who

have had shingles in the past, however you

should wait at least a year between an episode

of shingles and the vaccine.

Contact the BBNC nurses or your GP for more

information.
