REPORT TIME: TBD

Another Successful Year!It ’s hard to believe another

school year has come and gone. It always amazes me how time really does fly when you’re in BC Band Land. The BC Bandos had another VERY successful and busy school year full of performances; unique opportunities and most importantly, time spent together having a blast doing whatever we were doing.

It seems like just yesterday recorders were being handed out to the 7th graders and ear plugs were being worn on a regular basis. The 8th grade band started the year with only a few months of playing under their belts, but were determined to get to where they needed to be. Both bands worked very hard to make up for the fact they start band 2-3 years later than most other schools. Now, those very same recorder-playing kids and Bandos with little or no experience have evolved into an amazing group of musicians. Both Junior High

bands are playing music that is well beyond their level of experience and it’s truly amazing to witness. Stay tuned . . . the future is very bright.

The High School Band has done some amazing things this year! They are playing at a higher level than EVER before, including playing extremely challenging college-level literature. It’s fun to see how much this group can really do with the proper resources and staffing and I believe that we’ve only scratched the surface of their amazing potential.

As many people know, there is NEVER a dull moment in BC Band Land. There always seems to be something we’re preparing to play for, or we’re planning our next great adventure, but I think what makes this group so special is all the behind-the-scenes things that happen.

It is a well-known fact that being in the BC Band is a VERY unique experience and unlike

any other school. I’ve been told time and time again from outside observers that this program is out of the ordinary. Not many bands can say they’ve won a Grammy Award, have been stuck in a parking lot for hours after a live-TV broadcast and have the cops show up, have managed to get 35 people (with instruments) to the U of M (in a hour) using public transportation, or successfully executed the group slow-clap to revive a fish named Kyle.

The best thing about this group of people is that no matter what, they make the best out of any situation and typically turn it into an amazing adventure. I don’t know many adults that are able to do that as well as these kids can. Congratulations to all of the BC Bandos for a great year!! Have a great summer, be safe and be prepared for some crazy fun adventures already in works for next fall!

cadences, participate in a

week long African drum-

ming residency and is cur-

in preparation of the Earle

Brown Days Parade, which will take place on June 25th, beginning at 6:30 PM.

Many band students will be added as well to form a “Super-sized Drumline”

for this performance, so please come out and show your support!

6,520 Minutes and Counting!

Can you imagine spending 6,520 minutes of your school year

harnessed to a marching drum? For the first time ever at BChS,

students enrolled in the Drumline

class are getting the opportunity to do just that!

This new elective requires no previous experi-

ence and emphasizes note-reading, technique

and discipline. While the majority of class time is

spent reading and rehearsing music, the Drumline has also had the opportu-

Jazz FestivalsThe BC Jazzers attended the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Jazz Festival

in March and the University of Minnesota - Morris Jazz Festival in April. The band sounded GREAT and received a TON of positive feedback from the many people that came to specifically to hear their performances.

Over the course of the 3-day festival at the U of M - Morris, more than 40 high school bands from around the region participated. The BC Jazz Band had FOUR members receive top festival honors - “Best in Festival” for their superior performance:

Curtis Lee - Trombone•William Martin - Tenor Sax•Andre Spillman - Alto Sax•Marcus Taylor-Loyd - Drumset•

Congratulations to ALL of the BC Jazzers for outstanding performances at all of the festivals and events this year!

this would have been possible without the amazing drive and

determination of Mr. Phil Cohen. Mr. Cohen had the vision to

make this happen, and did.

Words cannot being to express how thankful and appreciative

we are for their continued support and amazing generousity.

Their investment in the BC Band Program will not only help

students currently involved in the program, but students for

many, many, MANY years to come! Thank you Brooklyn Center

Rotary! You have made a difference and for that we thank you.

Thank You Brooklyn Center Rotary! The Brooklyn Center Bands would like to dedicate tonight’s

performance of The Stars and Stripes Forever to the Brooklyn

Center Rotary Club and Mr. Phil Cohen.

In 2006, the Brooklyn Center Rotary Club made a financial

commitment to “adopt” the Brooklyn Center Band to help with

the need to purchase instruments so that all students, regardless

of their financial situation, can participate in band. To date, the

BC Rotary Club has donated $25,000 to the BC Band. None of

The Adventures of the BC Jazzers

The definition of a jazz

band is…a “small band

of jazz musicians.” here

in Brooklyn Center hS. It is NOT a

small jazz ensemble; it’s one of the

largest high school jazz bands located in the Minneapolis area.

The BC Jazz Band has been around for many years and has done

numerous performances. This is the jazz band that worked hard

to get to the top. The jazz band that saw many great musicians

BaNd awards

John Philip Sousa Band Award - Maloney Yang

The pinnacle of achievement in a high school band program, the Sousa Award recognizes outstanding dedication

and superior musicianship. The award has become a nationwide symbol of excellence in musical achievement.

Louis Armstrong Jazz Award - William Martin

The Louis Armstrong Jazz Award was introduced in 1974 with the approval of his widow, Lucille Armstrong, to

honor outstanding jazz students. Because the Armstrong Award recognizes the highest achievement in jazz

performance at each school, quantities are limited to one per school, except in the event of a tie.

Directors Award - Cameron Whitaker

The Directors Award is giving to one senior each year who goes above and beyond what is asked in the

Instrumental Music Program. These students show leadership, character, and an involvement in multiple facets

of the music program. The Directors Award is an honor to receive.

Christine Porter Band Scholarship - Curtis Lee

The Christine Porter Band Scholarship was started by an anonymous donor in 2006 : “The Christine Porter

Scholarship is presented to an outstanding band student in honor of the exceptional service and tireless devotion

to BCHS and to the band displayed by their director Chris Porter. Every student who has had the opportunity to

work with her, whether they pursue music as a career or not, is better for having been a part of the band and

for having known and worked with Ms Porter. Whatever they do, if they can take even a portion of her devotion

to quality, her amazing creativity, and her example of exemplary conviction and tireless effort, they will

doubtlessly excel at whatever career they choose. With this scholarship we would like to say to Ms. Porter that

we are immeasurably grateful for what you have done for all our students.
