The Untold Story

Not every extraordinarily gifted man makes history. There are a few average men and women who reach the pinnacle of success through sheer dint of hard work and determination. History has it that achievers are not necessarily people holding formal university degrees; or the ones belonging to established lineage. Some have risen from obscurity to heights of fame with, may be, Lady Luck smiling on them too, but just the way ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’ inspiring stories of great self-starters suggest that it’s thorough attentiveness, dynamism, tough grind and a resolute mind that guarantee sure-fire triumph!
It was in 1970 when S.P. Sing - the son of farmer Mahendra Singh Choudhary - mustered up enough courage to dream, and dream big at that. Not happy being saddled with his family agricultural income, he set out to look for greener pastures in the nearby district of Meerut where he completed his formal education, and gave wings to his flight of fancy.

But, that was just the beginning of the long struggle that lay ahead as life was never hunky dory even after he earned a degree in engineering. Bitten by the enterprising bug he looked around for different ways to augment his income while all along setting his sight on a long-term goal of attaining his target: a mega business conglomerate. His entrepreneurial spirit continued to haunt him, and gradually, after continuing to strive, he decided to go to Saharanpur to go beyond the comfort zone. Once ensconced in his shell, he burnt his fingers by doing routine mundane jobs and full-time placements in factories where he learned discipline and managerial skills. Not satisfied with the routine everyday existence, he craved for more. He also desired to add value and more meaning to his life. Within no time, he shifted to New Delhi, and worked at the manufacturing unit of picture tubes for the then television giant Uptron. The job stood him in good stead, besides keeping him occupied. He converted the shutting down of Uptron factory into an opportunity to branch out on his own.
The BeginningAt each stage there may have been setbacks but what kept him going was his soaring spirits that allowed his journey to progress further. Too eager to make a mark, he didn’t waste any time pondering and joined hands with his brother-in-law in 1988 in a contractual property business that lasted till 1993. During its short stint, their association built small size apartments.If there were stumbling blocks and delays in the voyage, there was also a lot of learning for all those involved with BCC for whom it was hard work that translated into hope that boosted everyone’s self-assurance. After experiencing and understanding the construction business completely, an idea of a construction company of his own germinated in him. And thus, on5th June, 1995, BCC- Bharat Construction Company was born.

A born leader S.P. Singh is at the helm of the BCC Group. Blessed with an inventive mind and business acumen to foresee prospects where none seems to exist, he also has a determined enthusiasm to see his vision through to completion. Under his leadership, BCC has taken massive strides from being a construction house to a real estate developer. As an expert on real estate, he has contributed tremendously to bring about fast-changing trends within the organization with stupendous results.He is passionate about making BCC attain newer heights in quality and process automation, and has been instrumental in implementing Just In Time (JIT) procurement and Six Sigma in construction. Singh foresaw a bright future in a virtually unfarmed piece of land. In 2005, BCC got a fresh lease of life when S.P. Singh made a decision that distinctively made his firm different from public or listed companies: the choice of Ghaziabad as the location for his housing project. Around the same time, he inducted his son Kumar Bharat to take over the reins. At a time when other developers preferred to establish their base in the Capital region and its adjoining towns of Noida and Greater Noida for their projects, he chose an unknown and virgin territory of Ghaziabad. It was his steadfast belief that made his determination to launch his company in the undeveloped place that has now led to many other developers focusing their energies into building housing projects in the vicinity. Today, as Bharat City stands tall among a plethora of structures that have come up recently, Singh’s resolve gets all the more validated. Singh’s judgment to induct Bharat into BCC also paid off. His son may be half his age, but what he lacked in boardroom experience, he made up for in enthusiasm. And new imaginative ideas. It helped him take a longer view and make decisions quickly, since together their approach to business based on trust and personal bonding gave BCC a distinct competitive advantage. Brimming with fresh ideas, Bharat entered the family business as a young enterprising daring man, and turned out to be a blessing. Under Singh’s guidance, the worthy son fostered his father’s vision within no time, and soon, while testing waters, tried his hand at the nitty-gritties of the construction business. Even as a novice, he promptly learned the ropes, selling a 200 sq. yard piece of land with moderate success.

It was his innate talent that led to arming Kumar Bharat with foresight and perceptiveness right early on in his childhood. Equipped with an instinctive eye to embrace any technological advancement, he does not allow any innovation to escape his attention. In terms of formal education too, he holds a remarkable list of credentials and hands-on experience in integrated project management, material management, systems and resource planning and budgetary control. His illustrious career spanning nearly ten years has only seen an upward graph. Having led a large diversified conglomerate with a strong presence in real estate (Retail, Residential, Commercial, Hospitality, and Education & Healthcare), he has travelled widely to help him grasp the fundamentals of life, and learn to deliver with promised quality and time.
As a perceptive mind, what drives him most is his craving for innovation. He is the first builder in North India to have introduced the pre-cast technology at a time when either it was unheard of, or was considered impractical. It was Bharat’s assurance and grand plans to start construction of approximately 9000 homes using precast that made people sit up and take note of the emerging trend in northern part of the country, and, today, we even see a couple of other well-known real estate companies foraying into it. He keeps tabs on the state of development in the multifaceted profession of conceptual development across the world, and gives his inputs in space planning, research and construction management, and execution of the design. The current developmental upsurge in BCC’s acceptance and recognition can be attributed to his forethought and well-timed alterations and modifications that he introduces from time to time. He is a perfect example of professionalism who knows how to deal with modern challenges through academia and practical outlook, and leads an ever progressive well-trained assembled team.

Following the success of their initial projects that paved the way for more ambitious plans, both Singh and Bharat decided to boost their plans with a more signature statement that would establish them with a single-minded approach to give them a noteworthy identity. They were clear about making a definite mark and would not have been contended with merely existing as just another real estate developer in the jammed market swarming with property developers. They obviously conceived an offbeat philosophy. And differently at that- something that demanded a giant step forward. After completing his graduation, he worked with an MNC for 7 years, where he cultivated and honed his skills in many aspects of managerial proficiencies, including programming, automation and project management. It is his special knack of applying his problem solving skills, risk analysis, negotiations, pro-activeness to meet timelines that helps him keep the life of every project healthy. He is an enthusiastic travel addict and loves all kinds of fitness activities, besides playing volleyball and cricket regularly.

Though he soon realized that there were accompanying business hazards that the cushy and comfortable zone of traditional buildings of brick and mortar didn’t have, he was adamant in trying out something that was off the beaten track. Of course, for BCC, it was a well-researched shift to a challenging technology. And now, almost eight years down the line, one can see competition hotting up with more and more construction companies trying their luck with precast.

It was sheer coincidence that BCC’s strategic PR and marketing consultant Mridul Chandra of Channel Public Relations Consultancy, who has been a consultant with the company for more than 5 years, shares the same dream, and is a willing partner in this endeavor. Together they have embarked on a journey to move forward and produce Hindi feature films shortly. This is going to be a voyage that may tangentially drift into yet another enterprising domain but, will essentially, remain within the ideological parameters that BCC stands for: of integrity, revolution, novelty and an honest commitment to the multitude.

The BCC culture of giving back flows from the tradition of nation and community building sowed by founder S.P. Singh more than two decades ago.
Having cultivated enough all round goodwill and amenability, BCC intends to advance its interests in it’s responsibility towards society as well. With many CSR activities in the offing, BCC is not endeavoring to enhance its public image, but dish up services for the deprived. In this direction, a few free eye check-up camps; free cataract surgeries for some of the poor in the adjoining neighbourhood; construction of a building for a school catering to the needy etc. are some of the key efforts that it has already completed, and many more are expected in the months to come.
Also on the cards is an initiative to impart free education to the underprivileged along with the rest of the students.
Thus, for BCC, its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a critical mission that is at the heart of everything that it does, or how it thinks and what it stands for. The BCC group is committed to integrating environmental, social and ethical principles into the core business, thereby enhancing long-term stakeholder value and touching the lives of the people.
