ENTREPRENEURSHIP is living a few years of your life like most people WON’T, so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people CAN’T

Entrepreneurship and support for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have gained additional attention to overcome the current economic and financial crisis in India. Indeed, there are approximately 48 million SMEs in India which contributes to about 1.3 million jobs every year, contribute more than 45% of India’s industrial output and 40% of the country’s total exports. It is therefore essential that we encourage entrepreneurship at local and regional level to boost sustainable growth, productivity, innovation and employment in order to safeguard our socio economic model. The Bengal Entrepreneurship Recognition initiative has been recently established by BCC&I to help identify and reward all entrepreneurs of West Bengal with outstanding entrepreneurial vision, irrespective of their size, wealth and competencies who are instrumental in the socio-economic development of the state. The aim of the initiative is to encourage the dynamic, sustainable and forward thinking entrepreneurs of West Bengal. This initiative recognizes entrepreneurship aiming at promoting further entrepreneurial activity. As such, the recognition also aims to contribute to the growth & implementation of Bengal’s dynamic entrepreneurial network. We must therefore continue to inspire Bengal’s young and small businesses to unlock their entrepreneurial potential which will in turn help to mitigate the effects of any crisis and contribute to achieving our socio-economic goals on the ground. Note – This initiative aims to cover all entrepreneurship ventures across all industry verticals like IT & ITES, Manufacturing & Other Services like Retail, Hospitality, HR, Education, Agro to name a few.

The brochure provides further details of this recognition including the selection criteria, application and other details of the “Bengal Entrepreneurship Recognition 2015”.

ABOUT THE BENGAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY

The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry was set up in 1853. However, the Chamber's origins date back to 1833 when its founding forefathers came together to form the first association of its kind in the country, which was later formalized as the Bengal Chamber. For the last one and a half centuries, the Chamber has played a pioneering role as a helmsman, steering the evolution of Commerce and Industry

in India.

To be the most valued Partner of Commerce, Industry, Academia, Professionals and Governments for achieving inclusive growth and employment generation, together with accomplishing societal and

environmental needs.

Donning its multiple roles as catalyst, initiator, facilitator, business partner and service provider, the Chamber has helped Governments, both at the Centre and State in crafting pioneering and significant

legislations. Today, the Chamber has over 300 members from industry, trade and commerce. The Chamber's interest and operations range from organizing mega seminars and relevant events on the 'brick' industry to the new-age 'click' organizations. From financial services, insurance, banking and

taxation to focusing on the environment and energy sectors, the Chamber's range of operations is diverse and evolving over time. The Chamber today is deeply involved in areas like Healthcare, Education, Energy and Environment, Information Technology, Finance and Banking, Corporate Governance, MSME Development, Manufacturing - to name a few and has now assumed a multi-faceted role.

The Chamber is also firm in its commitment to catalyze growth all over West Bengal and therefore, is continuing with its initiatives in Taratolla, Durgapur and North Bengal. While the focus in Taratolla is

infrastructure development and also developing the area as a manufacturing hub, the endeavour in Durgapur is to facilitate green development, clean technology and discuss environmental aspects of

industrial production apart from focusing on Industrial Relations for harmonious growth, education and career issues and lifestyle aspects. In North Bengal the focus has been on tourism and farming issues.

Much is happening in the East today, but much still remains to be done. The doors to the world are now

open. In this new environment, West Bengal can find its destiny and become the gateway to the East. The Bengal Chamber shares this truth with the people of West Bengal and the region.

Today, the Chamber's range of operations is diverse and evolving over time. The Chamber is deeply

involved in areas like Healthcare, Education, Energy and Environment, Information Technology, Finance and Banking, Corporate Governance, MSME Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure, Tourism - to name a few and has now assumed a multi-faceted role. Our tie-up with the European Business and Technology Centre (EBTC) on promoting clean technology access deserves special

mention. Our linkages with overseas Governments, Businesses and Institutions are growing stronger by the day and we have created very relevant B2B platforms for both inward and outward investments by

hosting delegations and taking regular business missions spanning continents. We have over 30 sector/area specific Committees catalyzing business growth, industrial development and socio-economic

progress. The Chamber's AGM2013 was graced by Shri Pranab Mukherjee, President of India which was an unprecedented occasion, in the words of the President of India, for Chambers of Commerce in

general.
