CSC Purpose• To monitor codes and standards activities potentially affecting PPI BCD member

companies and their products and to promote an open exchange of information among PPI BCD members with a strategic focus

• Committee provides overview of issues and opportunities, and provides recommendations to the Division, but does not set policy or establish position

• Primary focus is on standards that impact BCD products and local code opportunities with limited model code involvement

• Examples: ASME, ASPE, ASTM, AWWA, CSA, ICC, IAPMO, NFPA, NSF

NSF 61 - 2016

• Added criteria for chemical generators used in plumbing systems.

• Added use of section 9 exposure water (pH8, chlorinated, high alkalinity) when evaluating lead and copper release from brass and bronze devices. This was a recommendation from the Water Research Foundation (WRF) project from 2012.

Will also use this exposure water for all non-metallic materials instead of current pH 8 exposure water.– Expected to be more aggressive for lead leaching from brass.– Not expected to be any more aggressive for non-metals.– Effective January 2017 with 5 years implementation date (effective 2022).

NSF 61 - 2016

• Harmonized and simplified hot water exposures between Section 4 and Section 8.– Continuous hot uses hot water for conditioning and exposure throughout

process (17 days or 90).

• A revision to exclude fire sprinklers from the restriction of use of lead containing materials under section 3.5.

• Added Table 3.2 with test batteries for materials used in Section 8 and 9 devices that are unknown (not in table 3.1) and without formulation info.

EPA IRIS for t-butanol

US EPA IRIS Program is developing a risk assessment for t-butanol and when finalized, the EPA assessment will serve as the basis of NSF action levels for t-butanol, superseding the previous action levels for t-butanol developed by NSF in 2003.

The IRIS Public Science Meeting to comment on the public comment draft of their risk assessment was held on June 30, 2016 in Arlington, VA.

Based on the review of the comments, it seems there is no evidence for carcinogenicity (and thus the calculation of a cancer oral slope factor) is very weak. Thus, EPA may ultimately decline to calculate a cancer oral slope factor and the final EPA RfD will serve as the basis of NSF action levels for t-butanol.

US EPA IRIS Program is developing a risk assessment for ETBE and when finalized, the EPA assessment will serve as the basis of NSF action levels for ETBE, superseding the previous action levels for ETBE developed by NSF in 2010

US EPA announced the availability of the public comment draft of their risk assessment for ethyl-t-butyl ether on September 2016. The associated IRIS Public Science Meeting was held on October 2016 in Arlington, VA. The formal 60-day public comment period for the draft ethyl-t-butyl ether IRIS assessment was completed by December 31, 2016
