Presidents’ MessageBCIT has made a commitment to students to actively support their lifetime career success. We see the relationship between BCIT and the BCIT Alumni Association as a key component of living up to that commitment. With more than 140,000 alumni, and over 4,000 new graduates each year, that is a big undertaking.
2010–2011 was a year of significant transition for the Alumni Relations program at BCIT. We welcomed Pommashea Noel-Bentley as the new vice president, Development and CEO of the BCIT Foundation. Pommashea looks forward to ramping up the alumni and development programs at BCIT over the next few years, building on the foundation of her predecessor, Laurie Clarke. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Laurie for all that she contributed over ten years of service. We would further like to thank executive director Sherri Magson and her staff for their assistance in taking on additional duties during the transition.
Our greatest accomplishment in the Alumni Relations program this past year was exceeding our $1M goal for the BCIT Alumni Association Scholarship and Bursary endowment, seven months ahead of schedule. Alumnus John Hiebert presented us with a $1,000 cheque to take us over the top last May. Since then, with the generous support of alumni, the fund has grown to almost $1.1M, the largest endowment in support of student aid held at BCIT.
Keeping alumni connected and meaningfully engaged with the institute supports both their professional aspirations and the continued success of the BCIT Alumni Association. The past year saw a marked increase in the number of events that the Association sponsored and/or assisted with in some way, including the Lego League competition, the BCIT Student Association’s Peak Leadership program, and the first FUSE event hosted by the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) BCIT chapter, all great programs that involved alumni participants.
Your success is BCIT’s success. Through our events and programs for alumni, in particular our cornerstone BCIT Distinguished Alumni Awards event, we have come to know and celebrate more and more of you who are making a mark in the world.
And, thanks to alumni like you, BCIT’s reputation is growing. When you take the time to invest your energy, expertise, and other resources on behalf of BCIT, you help us add value to your credential. We are pleased to present this report which acknowledges and thanks you for all that you do for BCIT. We trust that you will be proud of the impact being made by your Association, and that you value the benefits and services inherent in your membership and ongoing connection to BCIT.
