JUNIOR ASSISTANT COACH ALEX KELSHAW I first got in the pool when I was 4 years old and spent little time anywhere else for the next 16 years. When I was 13, I moved to Blacktown City Swimming Club and this was the year I qualified for my first nationals. All that hard work started to pay off as I continued to improve with my first national medal at 14 and my first national gold medal at 15. From there I found myself selected for many teams, traveling to many places and meeting many people. Backstroke was my best stroke and the 200 my pet event although I also found myself getting rankings and medals in other events such as freestyle and IM. I represented Australia at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Guam and competed on the Trans Tasman Tour a few years in a row. Between my medals at Age and Open Nationals, selection on various representative teams and involvement with the NSW Institute of Sport I had the opportunity to work with some of the best coaches in Australia and from around the world. This gave me the opportunity to not only understand the finer details of competitive swimming itself but also on the many factors that influence performance. As a swimmer I have worked with nutritionists, sports psychologists, personal trainers and physiotherapists to understand exactly how to achieve the best I could. At an elite level swimming is so much more than just the laps you do in the pool. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to learn and understand so much about the sport of swimming and that is why I have decided to pass on my knowledge to the future gold medalists of Blacktown City Swimming Club. Being part of the Blacktown City Team was some of the best times of my life and I look forward to my new role as a coach and being part of growing the Blacktown team of future champions. ASSISTANT COACH CASSANDRA GALEA We welcome Cassandra Galea on board as one of our newest assistant coaches , Cassandra was a National Open water swimmer for the last 5 years both 5km and 10km , she has also been a NSW State Backstroke swimmer since first competing at the age of 10 years of age. Cassandra will be one of our relief coaches who will be stepping up when our Head Coaches are away with our competitive squads. We welcome you on board Cassandra and hope you enjoy your role stepping up from a National competitor with Blacktown City Swimming Club to now being a mentor for all our swimmers. Whilst we have faced some pretty big obstacles and hurdles over the winter period we have also managed to come to the other end of the tunnel with some positive groundings and structures being put into place that will see our club grow from these strong foundations. Whilst the cement may be still drying on the foundations, our future looks strong. We welcome our new coaching staff in Pat and Alex on board and thank the coaches who have worked under pressure whilst we sought extra staff. We are in the final stages of appointing a Head Coach and if all goes to plan they should be here for the centres summer launch. We are also implementing a new squad structure, timetables and pricing structures commencing for the summer and beyond. With these changes some tweaking may need to occur so we ask for your patience whilst these changes are implemented and are given a chance to work. My special mention must go to Brendan Smith who stepped up and beyond expectations and has guided the squads through the winter period. Brendan, our sincere thanks. On behalf of the club we thank him and wish Brendan the best as he pulls back on his coaching commitments to concentrate on his final studies and nursing placement. I need to also mention the committee who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the clubs viability through these challenging times. Thanks guys! My best to our swimmers who will be representing our club at NSW SC Championships at SOPAC good luck and we know that your hard work in training will be worth it and that you will wear the BC colours with pride. If you have any questions or concerns, please raise them either directly with myself in person or come along to a monthly meeting its your chance to be involved and be informed of the clubs running & future. FROM THE PRESIDENT WELCOME ON BOARD ASSISTANT HEAD COACH PAT STELLINO Pat is a former National Age and State swimmer and has been coaching full time for the past 7 years . Pat started has spent the last few years in Singapore where he was overseeing various international swimming programs. Pat grew up as a local Blacktown Boy who attended one of the local high schools, The Patrician Brothers. Pat swam with Toongabbie Swimming Club. He has coached many swimmers to State Age, Australian Age Nationals and Pan Pacific Games. Pat is big believer that technique is the most important part in the early stages of swimming and is excited at coming on board and working with the swimmers in our lower squads right through to our National Athletes. Pat is committed to helping build the club back to the strong force it once was and this can already be seen on pool deck with the passion and energy that Pat brings to squads on a daily basis. Welcome to Blacktown City swimming Club Pat! BETWEEN THE LANES August, 2014

SPRINGWOOD CARNIVAL Springwood swimming club held its annual winter short course meet on

Sunday the 17th August. We had 2 swimmers from our club attend this

meet Dyana and Benjamin Crabb, both siblings had a blast at this meet

and came home with medals and many Personal Best times. Dyana and

Ben represented our club in full Blacktown City swimming gear and wore it

with pride. Both had a surprise though awaiting them at the carnival, their

Great Grandmother Flora who at 103 years young sat by pool deck all day

watching and cheering her great grandchildren all day. So a big Shoutout to

Flora from Blacktown City swimming

We thank you for the passion you shared on this day with our club.

SPONSORS A big thank you to the following businesses that have supported

our club – please support them as they have supported us.

Congratulations on some of our recent winners at our Friday club night Raffle and a big shoutout and thank you to the amazing families who continue to support this raffle on a weekly basis, without your support and generous $$$ from your hip pockets our club would not be able run Friday nights and our swimmers would not be able to achieve the success in the pool they do.

Congratulations John Higgins on being this weeks raffle winner!

John correctly guessed the amount of marshmallows in the jar.

The winning total was 104 , our president does tell us there was a 105 in the packet when she counted them though .

So I will leave it up to your imagine where the missing one went to :)
