Congratulations: Sayuri Persotham was invited to the National Spelling B held at Sci Bono on Saturday morning last week. This was a red carpet affair and a wonderful opportunity for the 26 participants who took part. They were put up in a hotel for 2 nights and had the opportunity of sightseeting around Johannesburg before the competition. Sayuri did exceptionally well but unfortunately was eliminated in the 4th and final round. We are so proud that Sayuri represented Buccleuch Primary School at such a prestigious event. Well done. INSIDE THIS ISSUE:

Dear Parents

Welcome to the 4th and final term of 2015. In the eight and a half weeks left in this academic year, there is a lot to accomplish! Grades 1-7 will write English and Afri-kaans Creative Exams in two weeks time on 27th and 29th October, the AGM Budget presentation for 2016 takes place on 4th November, Grade R Graduation, Prize Giv-ing and Valedictory to name a few of the forthcoming events. Late Arrival: There are still far too many children arriving late to school. Parents/transport drivers must please walk their children to the office when they are late. If a child arrives late, and is not accompanied by his/her par-ent or driver, the child will be kept in a waiting area and the parent will be phoned. Our District Office takes a strong stand against the continuous late arrival of learners. Every effort must be made on parents part to ensure that learners get to school on time - especially once exams have started.

Extra Mural Activities - 4th Term: Athletics will be the sole extra mural activity during the 4th term. We would like to see every child partici-pating in the programme this term. The school participates in the ‘A’ League Athletics Programme, which is held in the first term. This will be an ideal time to get our learners fit and ready to participate in January, 2016. Support classes will continue as per arrangement with the teachers. See activities on page 4.

Transport Feedback: The transportation of our learners to and from school has been a worrying factor for many years. Questions such as: Is the vehicle roadworthy? Is it overloaded? Does the driver have a PDP license? Does he smoke in the vehi-cle? Is there control in the vehicle? Last term a survey was done amongst the children who are using various transport services. I would like to bring these comments to the attention of the parents who make use of transport so that there is an understanding of what transpires whilst their children are in these vehicles. Common complaints are:

Overloading - e.g. 4 children share one seat, others standing

No safety belts

Driver smokes in the vehicle

Loud music

Naughty learners are hit with a stick or have backsides pinched

Shouting, swearing and fighting amongst learners

Driver stops on the way to allow learners to buy on the side of the road

Other people are picked up along the road

Door at the back of bakkie tied with rope

For the safety of our children, your most precious youngsters, I beg that parents seriously look into these claims and do something about them.

Ronald McDonald House of Charities: About the project: For families of severely ill children, being away from your child is a very stressful time. Studies show that children cope better and heal faster when their families are by their side. This is why we have partnered with the Ronald McDonald House Charities, a non-profit organisation which creates, finds and supports programmes that directly improve the health and wellbeing of children.

As pioneers of providing family-centred care, the Ronald McDonald House Charities locally provides programmes such as the Ronald McDonald Family Room™ and will soon launch the FIRST Ronald McDonald House™ in South Africa.

“We started this charity two years ago and since then we have seen that the need to help the families of sick chil-dren far outweighs that of our international counterparts. Many families of severely ill children are forced to travel far distances to receive treatment. For these families, being away from their child is a very stressful time. Many parents do not have funds to visit their sick children at hospital on a daily basis. As a result, parents often sleep in hospital chairs, in their cars or travel back home or to work, leaving their child alone for a lengthy period of time,” says RMHC South Africa Chairperson, Reggie Skhosana.

How can you support the Ronald McDonald House Charity project? To raise funds, McDonalds South Africa has embarked on a fundraising drive by selling Ronald McDonald red and white striped socks. The socks are on sale for R20 per adult and R15 per child. Sales from the striped socks will contribute to the building and opening of the Ronald McDonald House™ within the next ten months. Be part of fulfilling this dream. For more information visit http://www.rmhcsouthafrica.org and join the conversation on Twitter @McDonalds_SA #PassOnYourStripes

How this affects Buccleuch Primary School: Buccleuch Primary School has been chosen as the first school in our region to launch this project! We are looking forward to a special assembly on Friday morning, 16th October from 08:30-09:30, where the “Pass On Your Stripes” project will be officially launched.

New Trophies Needed: As the school is now in it’s 30th year, we are in desperate need of replacing our older trophies. We would like to put forward a proposal to our parent body to consider sponsoring floating trophies for our end of year prizegiving awards. For instance, one of the previous SGB chairpersons donated the “Gundersen Floating Trophy” for the learner who excelled in practical application in terms of overall knowledge of compters and software.

The school would like to give trophies for Soccer per age group, the top learner per grade and for our values. We have the Victor Nongalaza Award for the most caring Grade 6 learner, but no trophy as yet. Mrs Struwig will be purchasing the trophy for this award as it is close to her heart. Victor Nongalaza was a Grade 5 learner at our school a number of years ago, who unfortunately passed away after being struck by lightning. He was a very kind, caring and loving little boy. This trophy will be awarded to the Grade 6 learner who reflects the same spirit and determintation that Victor displayed throughout his life, and whose character mirrors the values to which Victor held fast.

Please give our appeal some serious consideration and contact the school if you as a parent, or as a family, would like to sponsor one or two floating trophies.

Striped socks are to be purchased from Buccleuch Primary School

R15 per pair for children R20 per pair for adults

SANDTON PRECINCT CRIME TRENDS – PERIOD 2015-09-18 TO 2015-09-24 Motorists are urged to remain aware of jamming devices used by criminals at shopping centres, petrol stations and primary schools. Primary schools are targeted because parents exit their vehicle to walk their little ones into the school grounds and that is when the thieves strike. Check your vehicle manually to ensure that it really is locked and verify which shopping centres and garages with shopping facil-ities have the alarms which activate should a jamming device be used. When you hear the siren, immediately check on your vehicle. Most importantly, motorists are urged to keep their valuables out of sight because if the suspects can’t see anything, they will
