Something Different for Lent
“This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the
Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.”
2 Corinthians 9:12 NIV The Lenten Season is about to begin with Ash Wednesday on March 9th. Often Christians will give up something for this season as they focus on how Christ gave his life for us at the cross. While there are some positive benefits to this sort of a mini fast from something over the Lenten Season, I would ask you to consider not what can I give up for the cause of Christ during this time but what can I give in Christ’s name at this time. Over the next seven weeks we will be collecting Action Packs for needy Christians in nations where they are persecuted to be distributed by the Voice of the Martyr’s. The Voice of the Martyrs is a missionary organization that works with and makes known the needs of persecuted Christians around the world. Simply pick up an Action Pack vacuum bag at church and fill it with the items on the suggestion list. This project is similar to the Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes we
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.

do at Christmas time but these packs can be for adults as well. This year our Action Packs will be going to the countries of Iran and Pakistan where the church is under great persecution. Items you can include are things for winter warmth like a blanket, a jacket or windbreaker for an adult or child, gloves or mittens for an adult or child, or for an adult a knit hat. Other items you might send are socks for an adult or child, a solid color T-shirt of any size, a towel, a bed sheet (queen size, flat), a bar of soap and a sponge or foam ball. You can even send a family photo if you wish. To these packs the Voice of the Martyrs will add a full color story book called, He Lived Among Us, sharing the Gospel with the recipients. Christians who receive the Action Packs can keep them or pass the gift packs on to non-Christian friends. You can pick up your Action Pack at church for a donation of $10 which will cover the cost of the vacuum bag, sending it to Voice of the Martyrs and shipping to Iraq or Pakistan. Yours for the Gospel, Pastor Garry

BOOK RECOMMENDATION for March. . . Living on the Edge: Dare to Experience True Spirituality by Chip Ingram Based on the biblical model for Christi-anity, Living on the Edge challenges readers to experience Christianity the way God in-tended and provides an actual profile of a disciple of Jesus Christ that is relational, grace-based, faith-focused, practical, and measureable. A launching pad for a journey toward becoming a Christian who lives like Christ, this book provides questions and re-sources at the end of each chapter, as well as directions to continue on your journey through an interactive Web site, where the reader will discover clear spiritual pathways and per-sonal coaching to make it over barriers.
THANK-YOU . . . On behalf of my brother Hans Wilhelm, who recently went through quadruple bypass surgery, I would like to convey the following:
"We are grateful for the multitude of letters, cards, phone calls and other well
wishes, that we have been blessed with. For the hundreds who prayed for me, I am forever
grateful. I am sure that you will understand that I am not able to answer you personally, but wanted to communicate with all of you
immediately even though it is in this
general way. " With sincere appreciation to our church family, Peg and Jerry Ross

~ AWANA NEWS ~ We are well under way into our second half of the club year and have a contest going for the clubbers in Sparks through Trek. There are four teams with clubbers from Sparks, T&T Girls, T&T Boys and Trek. The winning team will be treated to a Pizza Party at the end of the club year. Good Luck, Clubbers!!! You are doing a great job!!! Our January 2010 Clubbers of the Month are: Sparks – Chloe Rogers, James Cawley & Nate Mehling; T&T – Kimberleigh Cawley & Austin Rhamy and Trek – Mikayla Kreider. Keep up the great work! We are proud of you! AWANA BIBLE QUIZ ~ The annual Bible Quiz was held on Saturday, February 5th at Monument Bible Church at 9:00 a.m. As always there was some tough competition but five out of our six teams placed in the top four. The results were as follows: T&T Girls: Book 1 – Kassadie Rahmig & Hope Schanaman - 3rd Place; Book 2 – Kimberleigh Cawley – 4th Place, *Kimberleigh had a perfect score on the Multiple Choice and received an individual medallion; Book 3 – Breanna Deem; Book 4 – Tiersa Darley – 2nd Place.
T&T Boys: Book 1 – Javier Jimenez & Joshua Scanlan – 1st Place; Book 4 – Josiah Ashford & Austin Rhamy – 1st Place. A BIG THANKS to Carol Parvin, Linda Peterson, Deb Pieper, Todd Pieper, Pastor Andy, Alexandra Stricker, Parents and Cheryl Rose for working at Quiz, coaching &/or cheering on and supporting our clubbers! You are all so appreciated!!!
SPORTS DAY ~ On the day following Quiz, Sunday, February 6th, we had our annual Sports Day celebration with many different teams represented: Green Bay Packers, Pittsburg Steelers, Nebraska Huskers, Scottsbluff Bear-cats, Gering Bulldogs, Harrisburg Wildcats, Com-munity Christian Eagles, AYSO soccer teams, etc. Our special guest speakers for Council Time were our very own Carli Rose and Zach Pieper. They told us about their spiritual journey from trusting Jesus as their Lord & Savior as Sparky age chil-dren to being seniors in high school and dealing with non-Christian peers and teachers. They told us about sports they had been in as well as the clubs they currently participate in at school, and extracurricular and church activities in which they are involved. (Please see my Commander Commentary below for a VERY COOL story that Zach shared with our clubbers!!!)
~ COMMANDER COMMENTARY ~ As I mentioned above, Zach shared a really

cool story with us that had just happened to him on the previous Monday when he and his parents travelled to Chadron State College to interview for an R-HOP scholarship. He said that, of course, he was nervous about the interview and all of the grilling questions that he was expecting from the panel. One of the first questions that they asked Zach was what kind of books he liked to read. Zach told them that he didn’t read many books but that he reads the Bible. From then on it became a very easy interview for Zach as he realized that the panel members were Christians. They dis-cussed the latest book of the Bible that Zach had read which was II Kings; they noticed on his appli-cation that he was a leader in training in AWANA and so he was able to share what the letters in AWANA stand for and the verse in the Bible that AWANA is based on – II Timothy 2:15. He also told the clubbers about how he got to tell the panel how much he enjoys working with them. (By the way, he got the scholarship!!!) As I am writing this, we have one last event in February. The last Sunday of February we have our Grandparent’s Night where the clubbers invite their grandparents/adopted grandparents to join them for a night at club. This is always a fun time to show off to our grandparents what we’ve learned, the songs we sing and the games we play! In closing, with windy March just around the corner, I am reminding you of Who is in Con-trol of the winds and the storms of our lives. He is there for us in and through it all!!! Cheryl Rose, Commander
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . CIRCLE OF PRAISE: Since 2007, we have been privileged to have chaired the Circle of Praise. Don and Carol Loos have graciously volunteered to take over the leadership effec-tive February 2011. (Elaine and Ed Kling will serve as co-leaders). We have enjoyed the fellowship and good times with everyone and trust that Don and Carol will be given the same support that you gave us. We hope that this year we'll gather more members and that each program will be fun and inspirational to those attending. Serving Him, Peg and Jerry Ross P.S. Next meeting is March 18th—Dave & Teri are hosting.
(Continued from page 4) JEREMIAH HOUSE Creamed chicken in toasted nests, fruit, green beans and cookies were served Tuesday night. The kids enjoyed the meal. There was a young boy, I would guess 9 yrs. old, that was told he had to eat two green beans to get more chicken. He put the two beans in his mouth, the others at the table chanted "swallow it, swallow it". He did swallow it and said "now can I have chicken"? He ate three helpings of chicken. So at the end of the meal, we had chicken left, so I said he could take some home. I asked him how many people were at his house. He kidded and said "oh, ten thousand". Since we didn't have ten thousand servings left, we gave him a container full. The homeless adults that come were grate-ful for their meals. There is a large charity that will begin sending ready packed meals to give them. Brian will have a room they can eat in. If they want to visit the kids after eating, they can. We will have a pizza party next month. Then we only have one more time. The year does go fast. It is wonderful to have food in the pantry for the m ea l s . Th an ks f o r t h e don a t i ons . Serving for the Lord, Terry Martin
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ladies Guild - The ladies of Zion met on February 6th for their monthly meeting with 16 ladies pre-sent. Prayer was given by Barb Kautz. The min-utes of the last meeting were read and approved. Joyce Kautz reported that the noodles for the Soup Supper were made. Butterballs were made on Saturday, the 12th. The annual 4C’s Women’s Fellowship will be held March 5th at 2:00 p.m. at the Gering Civic Center. The cost is $8. Zion will have the opening and closing prayer. Deadline to RSVP is February 25th. Thirteen Valentine boxes were filled with goodies for our college students and sent to them in the mail. The meeting adjourned with the Lord’s Prayer. Hostesses were Joyce Kautz and Peg Ross. Respectfully submitted, Helen Maier
WOULD YOU HELP OUR PASTORS? If for some unfortunate reason you are
admitted to the hospital:
Please have someone call the church office at 632-8125 and let us know.
Please understand that the hospital will not call the
church or notify us of your hospitalization; therefore our only way of knowing you’re in the
hospital is if we are notified by you or your family. Our sincerest desire is to be there for you
during your hospitalization. Thanks for your help with this!

Lenten season offers time for growth Many of us know our IQ (intelligence quotient), but what about our SQ (spiritual quotient)? Lent is a good time to think about the quality of your spiritual life. Do you think about God often … or rarely? Do you pray often … or occasionally? How well do you know the Bible? The Commandments? The Be-atitudes? The lives of biblical heroes and heroines? During Lent, commit to spending more time in prayer. Also consider selecting a book of the Bible or a particular Bible character to study in-depth during this period. Some people give up particular items or habits during Lent. If used wisely, this discipline can help you abandon things that have been interfering with your relationship with God. Seek out devotions and books that can help strengthen your spiritual life.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . MISSIONS WHO'S WHO in Missions is a monthly critique of the different ministries that Zion Evangelical Church supports. WYCLIFFE: Wycliffe was founded in 1942 by William Cam-eron Townsend. A missionary to the Cakchiquel Indi-ans of Guatemala, Townsend caught the vision for translation when Cakchiquel-speaking men expressed their concern that the Bible was not available to them in the language that they understood clearly. As a re-sult, Townsend resolved that every man, women and child should be able to read the Bible in their own lan-guage. Since it's inception, Wycliffe has made great progress in Bible translation all around the world. More than 700 scripture translations have been completed to date. CHIEF: (Christian Hope Indian Eskimo Fellowship) The vision of CHIEF is to see an effective Chris-tian witness in every Native American tribe and all re-lated tribes in this generation. It's mission is to disci-ple and equip a strong Native American Leadership for the development of the indigenous church throughout North, Central, and South America. Check back with WHO's WHO in next month's Newsletter. Thank you for your support. In His Service, Jerry Ross

MOPS at Night ~MOPS at Night is building relation-ships and reaching out to fellow moms. This month we are planning our fundraiser. For those of you who wait with baited breath, I apologize, but we are not going to be selling cabbage burgers this year. Instead, we are go-ing to be hosting a small business & craft fair / bake sale on April 9th. MOPS moms have the first pick of areas; however, church members are also encouraged to contri- bute. Our fundraiser is intended to help raise money to support our MOPPETS by providing the kids supper, al-lowing us to advance a scholarship membership to a mom in need and to send our leadership to conven-tion. In additions, this year a portion of our proceeds will go to support one of our MOPS moms. Ashley Mack Houston was a regular attendee 2 years ago when her 3 year old daughter, Danika was diagnosed with Leu-kemia. She is now on her second round of chemo which is the strength of an adult this time. Please help as we reach out to the Mack-Houston family. You can read more about Danika and her story at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/danikahuston?ref=nl.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . Sunday School - As I am sitting here doing my newsletter, it is 65 degrees out, and there is no turning back, spring is very near! We have selected our week for Vacation Bible school: June 13-17, so be sure to mark you calendars. We can always use help that week, and we will keep everyone informed of our needs as we get closer to summer. We will have our annual Easter egg hunt. Since Easter is later this year, maybe we will be guaranteed warmer weather and can have it outside. Please remember that you are always welcome to join your children for Sunday School. And now from the mouth of babes: Little Susie concluded her prayer by saying, "Dear God, before I finish please take care of Daddy, Mommy, my baby brother, Grandma, Grandpa...and please, God, take care of yourself, or else we're all sunk!" How true , we are lost and "sunk" without God in our lives. I am so glad that here at Zion that the word of God is taught. In God's Love, Sharon, Robin & Deb
Camp Rock Annual Banquet March 12, 2011 ~ 6:00 p.m.
Gering Civic Center
Tickets are $10 and are available at KCMI, Bible Book Shop, or by calling Camp at (308) 262-1585.
Come spend an evening with us praising God for all the amazing things He has done at Camp Rock this past year! A fun filled evening that will feature a little bit of what camp life is like is planned. This will be a great chance for all the people that are interested in Camp Rock to get to know each other better. We will have some testimonies from 2010 staff who worked directly with kids last summer. They will be sharing how they saw God work in the kids' lives as they learned more about the Gospel of Christ. We will also share where Camp is headed for this coming year. This year's camp theme is "Mystery Revealed". It is based on the book of Ephesians where Paul reveals the mystery of Christ. There are so many kids that have not heard about what Christ has done for us and they are desperate for the truth.

Hush . . . hush
Seven-year-old Kathy tried to quiet her younger brother during a church service.
“Hush … hush,” she warned him. “You’re not supposed to talk out loud in church.”
“Why?” asked the brother. “Who’s going to stop me?”
Kathy pointed to the rear of the sanctuary. “See those men standing back there?
Well, those are the hushers!”
Valley Mobile Food Pantry March 24th at 1:00 p.m.
at the old Sun-Mart in Gering.
THERE IS A CHANGE HAPPENING with the Mobile Valley Food Pantry. The Sidney branch of the Omaha Food Bank, where much of the food came from for our Mobile Pantry, is closing. That is not necessarily
a bad thing though. Our Mobile Pantry can now order what is actually needed… . . .in the quantities needed.
SO, instead of actual food donations, the Mobile Pantry appreciate cash donations to pay for the purchase and delivery of the food. For every dollar donated, 6.25 pounds of food will be purchased!
That is very exciting! If you would like to donate to this wonderful cause, please make your checks payable to Zion Missions and in the memo line put: Food Pantry.
Additionally, with this new approach, the Mobile Pantry is in need of freezers to store the food when it arrives. Please let us know if you have a freezer that you would be interested in donating
to this ministry that lends a hand to those in need.
