John Paul II
This new film is the world's biggest documentary
on Pope St. John Paul II. It reveals his remarkable
legacy in the history of the Church and the world,
as well as how his extraordinary personality, gen-
erosity, courage, and sense of humor united people
on all continents, regardless of their social status,
age, or religious beliefs.
From the Desk of Dn. Tim... We have often heard it told to us, to love like God is to love uncondi-tionally. To love unconditionally is to love with no strings attached, expecting nothing in return. We love unconditionally because it is the right thing to do. In today’s Gospel reading we see a new caveat (word of the day, meaning a qualification) to love like God, we need to love unconditionally but to truly love as God loves we need to love without exception. The challenge in today’s Gospel is much more difficult. In my love of my wife, my daughter, my family, and my friends I can love unconditionally. I love expecting nothing in re-turn, but this gets to the heart of the Gospel I love those who love me. Our challenge today is to love without exception.
God has asked us to love all His children without exception. Jesus said even sinners simply love those who love them, but our call is to love those who are even difficult to love. I am often called to task in my love of others of God when I hear in my prayer life to love like God does. I go into bargaining mode explaining to God that some of His children are much easier to love than others.
In loving without exception that does not mean we condone the poor choices they make in their life. We saw this lived out after the shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in down-town Charleston. A young man filled with racially motivated rage entered a prayer service, prayed with the community and then gunned down 9 innocent souls. At the trial many family members said they forgave the young man because that is what Jesus would do. Wow! Could we do the same? We are called to see that at the heart of every person is value and dignity because they were created in the image and likeness of God. While everyone has value and dignity because they were created in love by God, for love, to be loved and to love, that does not mean everyone lives by this guiding prin-ciple. We pray that as we begin to love like God does, we will guide others to see that God loves them too. May we share the love of Christ in Word and Eucharist with all we encounter today.
