"Going out and volunteering sounds simple, but many people don't volunteer
because they don't know where to start." -Mark Foster
This month, our focus has been on planning for the future of our Chapter.
I would like to take a moment to thank all that have contributed to the
thoughts and ideas that will move the next Fiscal Year forward. We have our
last planning meeting scheduled in this month - please mark your calendars for July 9th at
Panera Bread, Health Village, 7:30am! After this planning meeting, the Board will be meeting
to finalize the calendar and our budget. This planning season is taking into consideration other
local organizations' events, so as not to conflict, but also for any partnering opportunities. I will
be attending a leadership roundtable on July 17th, hosted by the local AIA Chapter, with other
local leaders to discuss the upcoming year's events. Please email your interests in volunteering
for events - whether it be handing out flyers, signing people in at the event, event coordinator
(lining up the venue and scheduling), or any other new tasks you might bring to the table to
improve our efforts - we are all ears! Thanks for your continued service in all that you do and
see you at the July Planning Meeting.

CSI’S mission – To advance building information management and education of project teams to improve facility performance. CSI is a national association of specifiers, architects, engineers, contractors, facility managers, product representatives, manufacturers, owners and others who are experts in building construction and the materials used therein. They are dedicated to improving the communication of construction information through:
A diversified membership base of allied professionals involved in the creation and management of the built environment. Join us.
Continuous development and transformation of standards and formats.
Education and certification of professionals to improve project delivery processes.
Creation of practice tools to assist users throughout the facility life-cycle. Join a CSI Practice Group. CSI is governed by a Board of Directors, a nationally elected body that provides long-range strategic leadership. The Board is composed of nationally elected CSI officers, including the president, president-elect, two vice presidents, the secretary, and the treasurer; elected representatives (directors) from each of CSI's 10 regions; and a director at large. THOUGHT for the month – “Perhaps a man really dies when his brain stops,
when he loses the power to take in a new idea.” George Orwell
IT’S A SURE THING THAT YOU’LL NOT FINISH IF YOU DON’T START. An ancient proverb says, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” You have probably
known people nearing the end of their life’s journey who looked back and said, “If only I had done things
differently…. If only I had taken advantage of that opportunity when it came along.” Unfulfilled lives
are filled with “if onlys.” They are the refrain of the timid souls whose lives were finished before they
ever really got started. Life is filled with many opportunities — for great successes and spectacular
failures. It is up to you to seize the initiative, to take advantage of the opportunities that come your way.
You are condemned to a life of mediocrity — unless you get into action. Don’t delay; do it today! NAPOLEON HILL FOUNDATION

CERTIFICATION
“Readiness is the mother of luck.” Baltasar Gracian, writer
CDT AS CERTIFICATION TRANSITION – Supporting professional success is CSI’s primary
reason for being, and the CDT credential is an important professional accomplishment. We are writing
about some changes to the CDT that will increase the value of this credential to holders and to the
industry. CSI has embarked upon a strategy to transition the CDT to a certification. This transition has
been in the works for at least three years, prompted by CSI volunteer leadership serving on the
Certification committee and the CSI Board of Directors. The change to the CDT will take effect on July
1, 2018. The rest of the story . . . New prerequisites have been established for the CDT as a certification.
o Education: High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
o Experience One-Year of work experience OR Enrolled in built environment related degree program.
New requirement to maintain CDT o 24 CEU Hours over three years o Complete Renewal Application
o Fee (Member/Non-member pricing likely)
Renewal date will go into effect July 1, 2018 with all CDT’s up for renewal on June 30, 2021.
o Individuals who do not meet renewal requirement by June 30, 2021 will need to remove “CDT” as a post-nominal.
o An individual not meeting the CEU requirement may retest. o Individuals taking the CDT after July 1, 2018 will subject to a renewal requirement, to be complete within three years of taking the test.
CSI will notify CDT holders before July 1 that they have 3 years to meet continuing education (CE)
requirements to maintain or retest.
Communication about this issue to go to certificates and CSI leadership beginning in Marc

MEMBER highlights – “All endings are also beginnings.
We just don’t know it at the time.” Mitch Albom, journalist
DON MILLER, CSI, CDT, LEED GA joined our chapter on 5/14/18. He’s been the National Accounts Manager / Architectural & Commercial for Textured Coatings
of America, aka Tex-Cote, for a year. He said he joined the chapter for “education
and networking”.
Don and his wife Teri have lived in “Clermont for six months with our daughter
Shannon”. When he’s not calling on clients, he “spends time with my family, We

Love Disney!” He hasn’t yet determined how he wants to get involved in our chapter family. Guess
we should find a spot for him.
When asked Don what else he wanted folks to know about him, he said. “I always wanted to pretend
to be an Architect”.
CHRISTY KRONE, CSI is the Florida Representative, with the exception
of the panhandle, for Xypex Chemical Corporation, became a member of CSI
and the Greater Orlando chapter February 14TH. She has been with Xypex for
4 years, saying she joined the chapter because “the majority of my work is to
create specifications within the Engineering and Architectural Community for
Permanent Concrete Waterproofing and Chemical Protection by crystallization”.
Christy has been living in Jupiter for the past three years. She admits to being “single and
have a 27 year old daughter, living in Nashville.” Her daughter is “a Helicopter Flight Nurse/Trauma
Nurse.” Outside her Florida travels to help A/E clients with specs, she enjoys "golf, horseback
riding, cooking, creative ventures and beach-ocean activities”.
She wants to support the chapter by being involved in “social events and presentations.” Perhaps
she could help our A/E folks with an educational presentation. It should be easy enough
because, she said, “I enjoy working and providing educational presentations on concrete and the
benefits of crystalline waterproofing, chemical protection of concrete structures and the success in
sustaining the health of the structures for the life of the structures.”

NEW COLUMN PROPOSED – “A/E Member Spotlight” where the Member would tell a bit about themselves, their firm, how manufacturers can work better with their firm, etc... Obviously needed, at least to the editor, is participation by the chapter A/E members. As soon as the editor receives submissions, the column will become a reality. You want it, you got it, but your involvement is essential. "MEMBER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES." At chapter meetings, please sign up to be a door greeter, photographer, or event recap article writer. More than one door greeter can be fun as you can also socialize as people come in. It is best if the volunteers are members outside our board and committees who are signing up for these opportunities. Idea provided by: Beth Winkler, CSI Chicago
THE VALUE OF MEMBERSHIP –
“I can only speak to my individual experience as I have always said the CSI experience is not at the
surface level but very deep depending on what one wishes to get out of it. For me, as a product rep,
there was no formal school training like architecture or engineering. So, as I have always said, CSI has
taught me the language of construction. At .75c per day this is minimal in the world of education. Our
collaborative model has been an invaluable learning tool for me as I have progressed in my career. For
me, I can honestly say that I have gotten a lot more out of CSI than what I have put in. I do hope your
colleague will join us and have an equally impressive journey as me. Thank You for all your support of CSI!” William Sundquist, CSI, Institute Director FY' 19 – 21, Southwest Regional Sales Manager Whitacre Greer Co.

Masonry’s Greatest Strength - Hurricane season started on June 1, and according to the National Hurricane Center, this past summer and fall were marked by a particularly active hurricane season. Hurricanes Irma and Maria traveled through the Florida/Caribbean region and left behind a trail of destruction. Many of the businesses and homes left unscathed by the hurricanes were built with concrete masonry products. Masonry Association’s Staff
Engineer, Don Beers, PE, GC attributes masonry's strength to "its heavy, compact nature, making it more stable in high winds." To read more about why masonry stands up well to hurricanes click Read More
Navigating the New Qualified Business Income Deduction By Bethany K. Lusby, CPA, MST – GLC PA, Certified Public Accountants
The tax reform legislation that Congress signed into law on December 22, 2017, was the largest change to the tax system in over 3 decades. The new tax code contains many provisions that will affect individual, estate, and corporate taxpayers. One of those changes includes the Qualified Business Income Deduction, a new tax benefit allowing entrepreneurs, self-employed individuals and investors to deduct 20 percent of their business income. It is an important factor to consider when deciding whether the structure of your business will be a pass-through entity or a C Corporation. In this article, we will explain how the deduction works and examine the fine print. Continue Reading...
