We are called to know God with our head, love God with our heart, and serve God with our hands – and there are numerous ways to step into service at Manchester UMC and to make a difference for Christ in the world.

To serve Christ and one another means to make a faith-filled commitment to better the lives of others and to radiate the love of God through your humble and heart-felt words and actions. It’s more than just volunteering. It’s serving.

How can you take a step (or the next step – if you’re already involved) in servant ministries?

Get started by thinking about the following questions:

What energizes you? Consider what you are passionate about. For example, is it assisting the elderly, children, or those in need?... What peaks your interest? Are you happiest working behind the scenes or “upfront?”

Then find the place (or places) where your passions meet a need in the congregation, the community, or beyond!

Great places to dip your toe in:(Check out some of the following ministries for great places to begin serving!)

Page 3: be the Difference

Imagine the difference that Manchester UMC can make if all of us got involved in missions this year. If we all committed ourselves to be a part of something greater than ourselves – something transformative for others.

In 2011, MUMC stepped up and pledged to focus our missional involvement and strengthen our relationships with 4 key mission initiatives: The Bridge, Epworth Children & Family Ministries, Kingdom House, and Shalom House. We have been encouraging all of our ministry areas and all members and visitors to find a way to get involved in these vital ministries in the upcoming year.

MANCHESTER UMC’S CORE MISSION INITIATIVES & GOALS FOR 2012

In 2012, we’re taking our commitment to these ministries one step forward. Over the course of the next year, Manchester UMC will be focusing our church-wide missional efforts on specific goals and objectives in each of our Core Initiatives, making a significant difference in the lives of others.

Here’s how you can be a part of these exciting and transformative service opportunities:Look for information on monthly Faith in Action service projects (typically occurring on Saturday mornings). There’s a place for everyone to serve, regardless of their age or physical ability! You can see the schedule on our website: www.manchesterumc.org/mission-service/faith-in-action.Visit the Faith in Action table in the Narthex each Sunday morning to take a look at the upcoming schedule of service opportunities and talk with someone about how you can make a difference.Contact Rev. Beth Elders, Director of Outreach and Missions, ([email protected] or 636/200-4724) to discuss how you and your family can serve.

There are many other ways to serve! Read through the “Be the Difference” servant ministry catalogue (on our website or in paper!) for a listing of other ways you can immediately step into service. Fill out your information on the Commitment Card and someone will contact you soon with more information. Additionally, each service role has contact information for a ministry leader in that area who will give you detailed information about the role and help you determine if it’s something you might like to “test drive”. You can also contact them directly for more information!

But it doesn’t end there… Grow in faith! Take part in a Bible Study, Sunday School class, or other small group ministry that helps you grow in your understanding of God and God’s message to us today. For more information about opportunities to grow in faith, contact Debbie Irving, Director of Faith Formation, at [email protected].

If you have any questions about any ministries listed in this booklet (or ideas for a ministry not listed!), or would like to talk about ways you and your family can be involved in servant ministries, please contact Beth Elders, Director of Outreach and Missions ([email protected], 636/200-4724).

Located at Centenary UMC, the Bridge provides sanctuary for homeless and at-risk persons in St. Louis. Meals and support services for basic human needs are offered by a staff intent on eradicating homelessness, by guiding guests on a path to self-sufficiency.

Provide special meals for guests at least four times a year. In addition to the food, there will be opportunities for interaction between guests and MUMC members, through movie nights and other special events/themed activities tied into the meal.

Increase small group and individual involvement in the ministries of The Bridge through work days, serving meals, and interacting with the guests.

With the leadership of The Bridge staff, we will establish and sponsor a Free Store for guests that provides clothing and personal care items free-of-charge in a store-type atmosphere

Founded in 1864 as a mission agency of The United Methodist Church, Epworth Children and Family Services opened its doors to Civil War orphans and has been dedicated to the well-being of children ever since.
