2. TOOLS There are 3 things you need to vlog A camera that takes video (cell phone, flip, Sony Bloggie, point and shoot, or DSLR) Webcams work too, but the video they take isnt always the best. Skip webcams unless you have nothing else. You Basic video editing software like Windows Movie Maker or iMovie on your desktop or laptop These items make vlogging easier Tripod (video or gorillapod) a stack of books work in a pinch Microphone An assistant to help set up the shot and push record 3. TIPS Get friendly. Try and frame up your shot so that you are in it from the waist up, but dont cut off the top of your head. Keep it short and sweet. 3-5 minutes is the ideal length. Much longer and people stop watching, shorter its hard to get everything in. Its not a hard and fast rule though. Day in the life vlogs can be 20 minutes or more. Decide what you are trying to achieve and what kind of audience you are targeting. Add captions and slides that include text to round out the vlog and add in any points you want highlighted or those that you missed. SEO is important - Use keywords when uploading your vlog to Vimeo or Youtube to get your vlog in search engines. 4. TIPS Make sure you have good light. Sit by a window, take it outside, turn on a light or 3. Make yourself presentable - brush your hair and teeth, apply some lip gloss and wear something appropriate to what you are discussing. Minimize background noise and distractions. We love your kids we really do, but if they are bouncing in and out of a shot its distracting and hard to get your point. I know you are beautiful, but tossing or twirling your hair distracts us from hearing what you are saying. Save the picking, shifting, scratching, and twirling for off camera. 5. TIPS Share the love, I mean vlog Once uploaded to your video sharing site embed a copy in a blog post. All stories have a beginning middle and end, vlogs need them too. Have a point. This is much eaiser when you are vlogging about something you are passionate about. Vlog what you know and love. Enounciate and Project. In a blog if your font is to small no one will read you, in a vlog if your voice is to small they wont either Write up or draw a quick storyboard of the key points you want to cover. 6. TRICKS Write up what you want to talk about in point form and tape it just above or below the camera so you can glance at it if you need a little help. Taping a photo of RDJ or some other hunk just above the camera lens will help you maintain eye contact with the camera so you arent glancing around. Dont stop and start filming, once you are set up carry through. If you make a mistake shake it off and restart. Its easier to edit one long reel than a bunch of little ones. 7. WHY SHOULD YOU VLOG? - YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine - Helps with bounce rate by keeping people on your blog longer - It puts a face and a voice to a blog and helps your readers feel as if they know you - Make money - Bring in a new audience - Every minute more than 500 tweets contain a YouTube link.* - It gives you a reason to put on some makeup and shop for new clothes, well at least shirts. - Its fun - For some people its stepping outside your comfort zone and that can be a very good thing *Source - http://simplevloggingtips.com/reasons-you-should-vlog/ 8. WHERE TO UPLOAD YouTube and Vimeo are the two most well known and used video sharing sites Facebook Blip Metacafe Dailymotion ipikz.com Just like twitter and tumbler are the little brothers of blogging, Vine and Instagram video are micro versions of vlogging and a great place to start. Vine gives you 6 seconds to wow, where as Instagram allows you a full 15 seconds. 9. MAKING MONEY FROM YOUR VIDEOS On YouTube you can activate Google AdSense which is probably the easiest, but the revenue earned from it will be slight and if your video goes viral they could decide that you werent following their Terms of Use and keep all of your revenue. Ad Networks like Mom Pulse help you incorporate ads, offer royalty free music you can use and provide support and advice via cross promotion and forums. Sponsored Vlogs for Brands - Much like sponsored blog posts these are vlogs with a central theme where you work in a product plug. Product reviews while not straight up cash reviewing products on video is a nice way to add to a traditional blog review and if you have ads set up a nice way to make pocket change. People search for visuals on how things work. You could be on TV Ok the last one is a long shot, but you never know. 10. A few final points Ignore the haters, but take constructive criticism from commenters Respond to your commenters. Build community Dont comment on your crappy video, bad sounds, or make excuses in your video. Maintain a positive attitude and accept the things you cant change. Be genuine. People watch videos to get to know the real you. Be yourself and be honest. Be innovative and take chances. Try things that havent been done before. Be consistent Um, like, you know have no place in a vlog, um ok. 11.
