Page 2: Beach

.1.The safest place to swim is in between the red and yellow flags.

.2. Mark a reference point of the shore, to avoid drifting.

.3. Always read the surf conditions board.

Page 3: Beach

.1. If you think conditions are too rough for you, don’t go in.

.2. Always swim with a friend, not alone.

.3. Swim parallel to and not away from the shore when you swim long distances.

Page 4: Beach

.1.If you do not swim between the red and yellow flags you can be caught in a rip. All beachgoers must be aware of the potential for dangerous rip currents.

.2.Rip currents are powerful, channelled water currents flowing away from shore into the open ocean. They typically extend from the shoreline, to the surf zone, and past the breakers, and into deeper water.

.3.Rip currents can occur at any beach with breaking waves.

Page 5: Beach

.1. Rip currents cause more deaths in Florida than lightning. If caught in a rip current, do not swim directly to the shore, swim either from north to south, or south to north depending on the drift current. Most drift currents are from south to north during the summer months. Use caution whenever entering the water, and always swim near a lifeguard.

.2. If you ever get caught in a rip always lie on your back and put your arm up in a fist and then you will float up to the back of the waves and then you are out of a rip and then you can swim back to the shore.

The purple bit is a rip
