Take One It’s Priceless Let's face it – as much as we enjoy using the Internet, it is not always a safe place. It takes a little knowledge and practice to avoid making silly or even dangerous mistakes that can get you in trouble or even place your safety at risk. There are lots of little things that can get you in trouble. The list of problems and severe consequences are many. You can embarrass yourself, or your friends or family, you can encounter scams, crooks, and online predators. You can be the victim of identity theft, have your bank accounts raided, ruin your reputation, and have your life turned upside down. Don't let these things happen to you! Mark Weinstein, CEO and founder of www.sgrouples.com, a privacy-centric social platform, is an expert in protecting personal privacy and information. Here he offers up the most important ways to protect yourself: 1. Know that Not All Sites are Private They may appear to welcome you with happy, open arms, but don't go frolicking and clicking around unless your computer has the appropriate malware, adware and anti-virus programs installed to protect you . Before you sign up and leave your name and email anywhere, be sure to read the privacy policies of the sites you use the most to ensure that you don't get burned. Taking just a few minutes now could save you from permanent harm. 2. Differentiate Your Passwords It's tempting because it's so easy, but don't use the same password for all of your online accounts. If someone gets a hold of it, one hack gets into all your systems. they can do dame and raid all your accounts. Get a notebook and create unique passwords for each site. Add random numbers and special words to make them more difficult for others to guess. Protect each and every site from unwanted intruders. 3. Be Careful Linking Accounts Don't automatically link all your accounts and apps. There are lots of friendly sounding applications that will happily allow you to log on to one program, (like Facebook) and simultaneously have your posts linked and posted on other sites (like Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and more). The danger is that one or more of these sites will actually allow 3rd parties to share your information with each other, which give all of them free access to your accounts and personal information without your knowledge. This is dangerous. Make sure you don't set your accounts up this way and check your third party's permissions & privacy settings to prohibit sharing without your express permission. 4. Turn Off the Automatic Geolocation Feature If your geolocation is on, everyone will know where you are and when you are not at home. You announce to the world "Go ahead and break into my house right now!" Protect yourself from online predators by turning off geolocation on all your apps. Stop letting people know where you are at every moment of the day. It's simply not necessary or wise to announce to the world you are at the coffee shop. Be selective and send a private text message and leave a light on so someone looking at your home thinks someone is there. Protect Yourself Online! by Mark Weinstein. Article from Loss Prevention Magazine 5. Search Yourself Put your name in and search for yourself on any search engine. See what there is to see. Sure it may be gratifying if what you find is favorable, but if you don't like what you find, you can take steps to remove anything written about you by contacting the manager of the site or using sites that help clean up your online profile. 6. Don't Be Afraid to Ask People to Remove Content If a friend posts inappropriate comments or pictures involving you, don't be afraid to click "remove" and ask them not to do it again. Publishing a person's picture usually requires some sort of permission. You can also revoke that permission to post a photo if it is not something you want to be made available to the world. We all need to learn to respect each other's privacy. 7. Think Before You Post No matter what sort of website you have or type of social media platform you participate on, post only content that you would feel comfortable with the whole world seeing. Think about what you are about to post and who it focuses on. Relationships are strained and often broken by posts that were not intended to be shared. Think about the consequences of sharing in the community. Will anyone be embarrassed or humiliated? Will someone be hurt or harmed in any way? Think before you click. Mistakes can be hurtful and can cost you a job, relationship, or entrance to the college you really want to attend. 8. Clean Out Your Friends List Clean out your "friends" list regularly. Over time it can be hard to remember who you've friended and therefore who you're sharing information with. By keeping your list of friends current you can help protect yourself from awkward moments and personal information breaches. Take out people who you don't know or don't want to know and share with. Pay attention to the bad actors. Get rid of them. 9. Do NOT Give Out Your Phone Number and Personal Address Do not give out your phone number or your home address on a social networking site. There are people who will grab those phone numbers and use them in fraudulent texts, phone calls and voicemails. Know who you are communicating with. Share personal information carefully and deliberately, only with people you truly trust. Use the phone, email or text message and do not broadcast personal information to the world. 10. Exercise Caution Meeting in Person With Someone You've Met Online The safe rule of thumb is only meet in person with someone you've met online if you have someone with you and you meet in a very public place. And extra caution must be used. Even dating sites have predators attempting to scam or otherwise harm you, so be careful. Predators can use the information they find about you on networks like Facebook and other data rich online sites to lure you into a dangerous situation. Don't trust anyone you don't truly know. Improve your knowledge of how to protect yourself from being social and active online. Use common sense and pay attention to your inner alarms. Trust your instincts! If something seems creepy, stay away! For more information, visit www.sgrouples.com. According to Wikipedia HOPE is defined by the emotional state which promotes the belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstances in one's life. The First Annual Dance for Hope is being held exactly for that reason – to provide hope to Haitian refugees in the Dominican Republic that positive change is coming. When it rains in Ascension Village, the only entrance to and from the village is unavailable for use due to the high water levels. Medical vehicles, supply trucks and other necessities cannot be obtained. This unfortunate situation prevents many people from seeking the requirements they need for survival. Through humanitarian efforts we are able to provide not only hope but the resources to help eliminate this severe problem. On Saturday, February 16th my wife Dr. Dina Ghobrial and I are inviting the residents of Wasaga Beach and their friends and family, to come out to support our First Annual Dance for Hope event. The goal is to help raise funds that will go directly into building a bridge for the Ascension Village. The dance is in collaboration with Snowman Mania and will provide the festival with an entertainment component for the adult community. Music is being provided by B101 and will be playing top 40, dance, hip hop, old school and everything in between. We are looking for items to be donated for our prize table and any financial donations are greatly appreciated. We will be transforming the Oakview Room within the Wasaga Beach RecPlex into a ‘night club’ atmosphere with the doors opening at 8:00pm. Some of us might remember a simpler time, when if you were to leave the house or office, it meant you were usually not available by phone or mail until your return.Today we have created the need to be in constant communications with not only mail (now of the electronic kind) and phone, but of an endless list of social media and text formats. The Smart Phone of today has become essential, not just for businesses, but it seems for families to stay connected! I have been hooked on this connectivity idea since the early days of cell phones in Canada, signing on with Cantel in the early years and using one of the then futuristic Motorola phones, almost 25 years ago!Things have certainly changed and of course some added frustrations come with the constantly changing technologies. Trying to keep up with “new and improved” communications and information sharing can be challenging, especially for me as I find growing older seems to hinder my ability to adapt to “the new stuff”!

I am pleased that recently, I have been relieved of some the the “Phone Frustrations” that had become a part of my day. Since picking up my brand new Black Berry 10 Smart Phone on Canadian Launch day, I have been impressed with the ease of using and learning some of the amazing capabilities of this great new device that was designed and built by a Canadian Company. I am sure that I will be learning more and more about what this great phone can do as I

continue to use it and marvel at the ease and effectiveness of all of its features! Black Berry 10 is a great Smart Phone! Thanks, Black Berry!--Joe Bickerstaff

VATICAN CITY (Special) - Like anyone nearing the end of a business trip, Jorge Bergoglio's morning routine Thursday involved picking up his own luggage and heading to the front desk where he paid his own bill. Of course, Bergoglio ended his business trip to the Vatican this week with a monster promotion: He's now Pope Francis. On Wednesday, Vatican officials made a special point of telling the 5,600 journalists in town this week several anecdotes that underlined the humble, everyday, workman-like approach Pope Francis immediately established in his first few hours on his new job."He was concerned about giving a good example of what bishops and priests should do," Vatican spokesman said.At dinner Wednesday night, for example, the cardinals that had just elected him after five rounds of voting raised their glasses in a toast to the new pontiff. He toasted right back, "May God forgive you for what you've done!"The line cracked everyone up. As Pope, Francis is entitled to be ushered around town in a special limousine. But he didn't bother using the limo to get to dinner and instead piled on the same buses the 115 other cardinals were using."And as the last bus pulls up, guess who gets off? It's Pope Francis. I guess he told the driver 'That's OK, I'll just go with the boys,'" New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan told Reuters.Already, Francis has been walking around town, saying hi to people, shaking hands. It's giving his security team headaches but, the Pope calls the shots, not the bodyguards. The Vatican has a term for these first few days of a pope's reign: The Days of Surprise. And, indeed, so far, that's just what they are. As Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Francis chose not to live in the palace that comes with the job and instead lived in a modest apartment, cooked his own meals, and took the subway to work.

--continued.

Cardinals Choose Saintly Man

This is clearly the image of Francis that the Vatican is keen to project the world: A simple man, a prayerful man, a man who will fight for everyday working people, particularly the poor. That's why, after all, he took the name Francis, the first pope ever to use that name, to symbolize his closeness to the 12th-century Saint Francis of Assisi who famously repudiated all worldly goods to travel with and minister to beggars and to the poor. The new Pope will be installed at a special mass at St. Peter's Basilica that will be open to all on Tuesday. Until that mass, Francis' days will be taken up with dozens of meetings and lots of prayer. He said a special mass Thursday night at the Sistine Chapel which marked the official end of the conclave that elected him. On Friday, he officially greeted all the cardinals. Then, on Saturday, at Francis' own insistence, he met the world's press and took questions in English, French, Spanish, German or Italian - the languages fluently spoken by the new Pope.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION FOR POTENTIAL GAMING FACILITY IN WASAGA BEACH – WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU

In late May of this year, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) announced their intention to expand private sector gaming in Ontario by issuing a Request for Information (RFI) seeking input from potential providers as it expands regulated private-sector gaming in Ontario.

The Town of Wasaga Beach is seeking input of residents and business owners on whether or not it should support the OLG possibly locating a gaming facility in Wasaga Beach. Comments may be directed to the Office of the CAO by e-mail to or by written letter to 30 Lewis Street, Wasaga Beach, Ontario L9Z 1A1, to the attention of the Office of CAO. Wasaga Beach Blues FestivalNew this year! Our Home & Leisure Show will be an integral part of the Wasaga Beach Blues Festival at Stonebridge Town Centre.

The first man married a woman from Italy. He told her that she was to do the dishes and house cleaning. It took a couple of days, but on the third day, he came home to see a clean house and dishes washed and put away.

The second man married a woman from Poland. He gave his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. The first day he didn't see any results, but the next day he saw it was better. By the third day, he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done and there was a huge dinner on the table....The third man married a girl from Ireland. He ordered her to keep the house clean, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything but by the third day, some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye, and his arm was healed enough that he could fix himself a sandwich and load the dishwasher. He still has some difficulty when he pees...... “

"IF YOU MARRY AN IRISH GIRL”

Two hours into my first day of work as a WalMart greeter, an ugly woman came in with her two kids.Hearing her swear at them, I said, "Good morning, welcome to WalMart. Nice kids, are they twins?"The mom answered, "Hell no, they ain't twins. The oldest one's 9, and the other one's 7. Why would you think they're twins? Are you blind or stupid?"

I replied, "I'm not blind or stupid. I just couldn't believe someone slept with you twice. Have a good day, and thank you for shopping at WalMart."My supervisor said I probably wasn't cut out for this line of work. —

It has been just over 4 months since we, or should I say some of us had our first experience on our new Roundabouts or Roundabouts in general. That experience could have ranged from; no problem, to sheer terror or what the heck do I do? Yes the local municipalities and Ministry of Transportation offered seminars that covered aspects

of safe travel through roundabouts, but many did not and or could not attend, life is busy. Although we may not be used to using roundabouts, they are not new and do offer several benefits over traditional intersections some of these are:Improved safety - reducing the number of vehicle conflict points and reducing vehicle speeds, in turn, reduces the potential for severe crashes and serious injuryReduced speeds - a reduction in speed is necessary to negotiate the roundabout, whereas vehicles may not slow down during the green phase of a traffic signalIncreased capacity – a higher volume of left turning vehicles is better handled by a roundabout than a multi-phased traffic signalFewer stops and reduced delays - delay is significantly reduced by yielding at the entry of a roundabout, rather than stopping and waiting for a green light at a traffic light; or waiting for a gap in the traffic at a stop sign Less idling and air pollution – reduced delays mean reduced fuel consumption and improved air quality by reducing emissions Reduced maintenance costs – the roundabout eliminates maintenance and electricity costs associated with traffic lights To help those who still are unsure on how to safely use a roundabout and to remind those who jeopardize other motorists by using the roundabout a as a mogul on a slalom course as they dangerously cut others off as they travel straight though, I offer the following tips: 1)Slow down as you approach the roundabout, look to see what vehicles are already in the roundabout2)Vehicles in the roundabout move in a counter-clockwise direction3)Choose the correct entry lanea. To turn left or to go straight choose the INSIDE laneb. To turn right or to go straight choose the OUTSIDE lane4)Traffic in the roundabout has the right-of-way, you must Yield to those motorists5)Do not enter the roundabout unless it is safe to do so, if the roundabout is busy you may have to stop6)Only enter the roundabout when there is an adequate gap in the circulating traffic7)Give large vehicles extra space to manoeuvre8)Avoid passing other vehicles in the roundabout9)Watch for pedestrians crossing the roadway when approaching or exiting the roundabout10)Signal your exitUsing and practicing the above tips will make your travels through roundabouts a safe and enjoyable one.For more information about Ontario’s Roundabouts including an educational video, brochure and driving tips please visit: www.ontario.ca/roundaboutFor other safe driving tips and driving information please visit: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/Remember to check out my next “On Duty” article in Beach Booster!

Pets have teeth too! Just like our teeth, they need care too. Studies show that 85% of dogs and cats over 6 yrs of age have some form of dental disease. To prevent dental disease start brushing at a young age with a pet toothpaste – the levels of fluoride in human toothpaste are toxic to pets and not very tasty. Dental treats and diets can also make a difference. Prescription dental diets are coated in a dental cleaner and decrease tartar and gingivitis. Your pet's teeth should be checked yearly during their physical examination. We will look at the gums, oral tissues and all teeth – especially the premolars which are difficult to see at home and often where dental disease starts. If there is dental disease, a dental cleaning under general anesthetic can clean the teeth effectively, including under the gum line where severe dental problems are most often found. Sometimes the mouth has been neglected or due to genetic tendencies there can be infected or painful teeth, gum recession or bone loss. These cause pain to your pet and can cause widespread infection – even to the heart valves and kidneys. Your pet may show pain by having low energy levels, a decreased appetite or reluctance to chew. After dentistry and removal of infected or broken teeth we often here the pet seems younger and has more energy. If your pet has odour from their mouth, will not allow examination of their teeth or has visible tartar build up, they may have dental disease. Early intervention and prevention is best, and can avoid numerous teeth extractions. Brushing, dental treats and diets and professional cleaning can keep your pet's smile bright and odour free.

I'm excited to introduce to you my first featured entertainment section in this week's beach BOOSTER. We live in a great community and as the town is growing so is the entertainment/events. Beside my love for real estate, I have a passion for this industry having worked in radio and television over the past years. It is my pleasure to provide you with local happenings in Wasaga Beach.

Let me begin with the 6th Annual Meaford International Film Festival (MIFF) from August 30th to September 2nd, 2012. MIFF was instrumental in giving us a helping hand with our very first WBSFF and continues to share our vision of nurturing our festival for years to come. Four films were presented this year: Saalam Dunk, The Dynamiter, Under African Skies, A Separation. I attended the opening night premiered of Saalam Dunk. Filmed in Iraq and produced by Beau Lewis with director David Fine this documentary is based on a team of girls in their first season, the joy of their first win to the pain of losing the American coach who inspired them, this film offers a vision of what Iraq could become. It was very inspiring and must say tearful at times.

Rogers TV Fall Launch opened their doors on September 6th to unveil seven new series added to the many returning favourites. Rogers TV is a unique TV channel where community members take an active role in conceptualizing and producing television shows for local audiences. For a complete broadcast schedule visit www.rogerstv.com. Beach Booster is your community newspaper any thoughts you wish to share please email me at [email protected]

There are also awards to be handed out, with the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards, Canadian Radio Music Awards, Crystal Awards and the popular . A CMW film fest is at TIFF Bell Lightbox, showing a mix of premieres, screening and limited engagements (March 20th to 23rd). There is also a comedy festival, featuring Canadian and international stand-up comics. It is designed to exchange ideas, increase dialogue and provide networking opportunities with more than 2,000 national and international delegates. The Festival is comprised of 4 packed nights of performances, with over 700 showcasing bands at over 40 live music venues in downtown Toronto. An impressive array of speakers and performers have participated at this event over the years, including, but not limited to, Slash, artist; David Foster, Record Producer; Dennis Young, Artist/Songwriter; Public Enemy, Hip Hop Group; Mark Hudson, Producer; Sir George Martin, Producer, and Gene Simons, Artist. Add to the list our very own local boys, Fire and Sound who will be performing on Wednesday, March 20th at the Annex Wreck Room located at 794 Bathurst Street in Toronto. Tyler Chapman (guitar/vocals) and Kayton “Mickey” Zarhloul (drums) dropped by our beachboosterradio.com studio for a chat on Beach Corner. This will be their first time playing at the Annex Wreck Room in Toronto and the band is looking forward to this concert. A lot of rehearsals went into preparing for this showcase along with practicing their new song “Rock and Roll”. Tyler hopes to meet new fans that will enjoy their music as well as get the attention of record label executives. “One Time Girl” will definitely be included on their set list as well as some surprises. While at the festival both Tyler and Mickey are looking forward to attending some of the events, in particular meeting Metric and possibly Hedley and the experience of the music week. The band intends to release their first EP before June, and they are working on an upcoming video. Fire and Sound met as friends at Stayner Collegiate Institute and features Tyler Chapman (guitar/vocal); Colin Scott (bass/vocals); Edward Engel (guitar/vocals); and Kayton “Mickey” Zarhloul (drums). Influenced by Blink 182 and One Direction – their pop style music can be compared to Simple Plan. Let's keep supporting our local boys and wish them all the best at their upcoming Canadian Music Week performance. You can download “One Time Girl” FREE, and keep up to date with what Fire and Sound are doing by following these links:http://www.facebook.com/fireandsoundhttps://twitter.com/FireAndSoundhttp://www.youtube.com/fireandsound.Dianna Chycki is host of Beach Corner and Committee Member of the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival.

Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival

Wasaga Beach Lives

The Wasaga Beach Short Film festival has become a launch pad for film makers. Our second annual film festival Re/Max of Wasaga Beach Action/Comedy Best Film – Platinum Award winner, Eden Remme Watt for “Clifton Goes to the Beach” is taking her character Clifton to new heights.Eden Watt has repackaged Clifton to produce “The Clifton R.A.P” which is now a concept for a comedy feature film/screenplay that is being showcased with a trailer via the CineCoup Film Accelerator.CineCoup of CineCoup Media Inc. is creating a new model for feature film development, financing and distribution. CineCoup started operating in Canada in the fall of 2012. English and French language teams can apply to CineCoup with a feature film concept. Eden Watt, submitted “The Clifton R.A.P.” as her film/screenplay entry in this competition.Eden Watt’s two minute trailer submission of “The Clifton R.A.P.” will advance through a gamified application process designed to develop and package Eden’s concept while building audiences early. The top teams with the strongest projects will be optioned for development, and one project in each language will be financed for production and guaranteed release in CinePlex theatres through its partnership with CinePlex Entertainment. Eden Watt with all other filmmakers who participate stand to gain valuable audience feedback, social media savvy and a professional online pitch package bolstered by fan support. A jury of industry professionals and a CineCoup Superfan will select one project for up to $1 million (CDN) in production financing and guaranteed release in Cineplex theatres in January 2014.In "The Clifton RAP", a mathematician is on a mission to save the world from risk regardless of how much he infuriates his benefactors. The trailer is showing at www.cinecoup.com/clifton - “To show support, we need views, good ratings, and have it on people's watch list”, says Eden. “There is also a fan competition. And, there are some really great trailers from very professional outfits so we are certainly a long shot but I hope we can make it down the funnel long enough to get some attention.” So let’s visit the site and provide the level of support Eden and company need to make it to the next level. The Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival is revving up! First, a film to be made this year right here in Wasaga Beach by film producer Shaun Goldsmith called “Dark Waters”, a ghost hunter travels to a town haunted by several spirits and discovers the key to unlocking the truth to his own past. Next, a winner of our second annual Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival gets spurred on to new heights in producing another film that can possibly get into the big leagues. Let’s also remember the two free workshops the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival is hosting in the coming weeks, in partnership with Switch Video and Henry’s Photo Video Digital for Wasaga Beach businesses who are intending to enter the video advertisement category submissions for the Third Annual Wasaga Beach Film Festival.Stay posted for Dianna Chycki’s interview on Beach BOOSTER Radio with Eden Watt about “The Clifton R.A.P.” film project. The Roads into HuroniaThere have been many roads leading into Simcoe County. At least five ancient routes made their way to Huronia. They included Champlain's canoe-route by way of the French River; Brule's route of 1615 through the Humber River Valley and Lake Simcoe; the Iroquois warpath from Lake Ontario through the Trent System; the Algonquin Bluewater Trail skirting the shore of Lake Huron to enter Huronia from the west; and the Neutral or Brebeuf Trail by way of the Nottawasaga River.

The first roads inside the county were First Nations trails, paved with trodden leaves and fallen logs that acted as bridges. Blazed by the Hurons, they were kept open by the Ojibway right up to the days of settlement. Such trails included the Nine Mile Portage, widened for wagons during the War of 1812 and the Coldwater Road that followed roughly the path of today's Highway 12.Soon, there was another vastly more important route - the Penetanguishene Road, a military pathway built for the government by William "Tiger" Dunlop. In1825 when it was linked with Governor Simcoe's Yonge Street, it opened a route from Lake Ontario to Lake Huron, one of the earliest and greatest of all settlement roads of Upper Canada.By the middle of the 19th century when the government began to grant money to build plank roads, one of the finest in Ontario had been built from Bradford to Bond Head. Tollgates were common for most of the century and the traveller of the 1860s paid his way through six of them on Yonge Street alone. Even more common in stagecoach days were taverns - 37 of them at one time on 35 miles of the Penetanguishene Road alone. And then came our modern highways and the past became history.

fun and safe sledding

At this time we have our trail system up and running and have seen heavy snowmobile traffic this past weekend. Comments at the club house have all been great and riders have been enjoying all that Wasaga Beach has to offer. It was great to meet riders from as far away as south western Ontario to Dorset this weekend, its amazing how with today's advanced sleds and trails riders can easily traverse the Province and see what can only be seen from the trail. This up coming weekend is our first Fun Run in support of breast cancer and Wasaga's Snowman Mania festivities. Events are planned all over town as wells as at the Wasaga Sports Park so come out and enjoy the seasons diversity that make our town so great. As we enjoy a trail riding experience, please remember that trails are all two way traffic and trail signs are there to provide a safe experience to all who ride. As always ride in control, play by the rules.“Its all good , lets ride!” Ron Wheadon Wasaga Snowmobile Club President

The Canine Vision Canada program is the longest standing program. Since 1985, Canine Vision Dog Guides have been enriching the lives of Canadians who are at least 12 years old and are blind or visually impaired. These Dog Guides are trained to assist their handlers in navigating obstacles typically found on most daily routes, including curbs, steps and crowds. With the knowledge that they are capable of traveling freely and safely, handlers feel self assured every time they leave their homes with their Dog Guide. Snow Run for Fun 2013 in support of the fight against breast cancer

Hello Wasaga Beach Trail Riders

Beach BOOSTER supports

fun and safe sledding

As our season begins to wind down for the year, in reflection has been a good season over all. We began grooming in December and are still grooming mid March. We have seen thousands of sleds pass by and have enjoyed the interaction with the traveling public. Wasaga Snowmobile Club has been fortunate to have as long or longer season then most clubs south of Muskoka thanks to our snow making system called Georgian Bay. With the spring melt down comes many opportunities to experience areas nearby that offer riding well after the flat lands have expired. Check the OFSC Interactive Guide for riding opportunities near and far for weeks to come. We are truly a four season destination and continue to venture forward to new possibilities to promote our town and the enjoyment of winter outdoor activities. Thanks to all that have been involved and to those who provide all that is needed to make the season possible. Beach PeopleTales of our Neighbors and Friends

Joan Nesbitt and her husband Archie moved to Wasaga Beach 13 years ago from Alton, just outside of Orangeville. They had immigrated to Canada from Ireland in 1974 and have always been involved in community projects. When Joan first moved to The Beach, she became involved with the Outreach Program at the Wasaga Beach United Church. Through this, she was part of the start up of the Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank 7 years ago.Joan and Archie, with the help of approximately 60 volunteers work hard at our local Food Bank, making sure the shelves are stocked, administration runs smoothly and food is distributed to those in need of a little help here in The Beach, while always showing compassion and assuring confidentiality .When the Ministerial food Bank first opened, there were 40 to 50 families registered. Now, with over 420 families on the registration lists, all the volunteers are kept busy, but do so with a smile and a spirit that shows they are all truly happy to assist in providing help to so many.Joan is quick to say that even with the efforts of the volunteers, the helping of local families would not be possible without the generosity of the residents of Wasaga Beach!Fund raising events also help stock the Food Bank and raise the much needed cash. The annual performance of the Barrie Concert Band at The Lighthouse Church in December raises approximately $6,000.00. Every year the Christmas Food Drive sponsored by our friends at 97.7 The Beach, brings in cash and food. Last December, over 4,000 lbs of food and $2,000.00 in cash was dropped off that one morning.Joan and Archie have been married for almost 53 years. Joan is eager to continue to help our community, as she remembers her family being helped by a local church during some troubled times when she was a child in Ireland. Thanks to Joan, Archie and all the great folks at our Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank!Joe Bickerstaff
