Thanks to the many advances in dental implant technology over the last 40 years, implant-

supported dentures and Permanent Teeth-in-a-Day have become the preferred choices for the

frustrated denture wearer or those not happy transitioning from real teeth to dentures.

Implants are comfortable and look and act like natural teeth. Implants provide the greatest

stability, while helping preserve that precious bone

under the gums in order to maintain the natural look

of your face and lips. They are as close as we’ll ever

get to “real teeth” in dentistry, and patients often

What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed in

your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or prosthesis (denture).

Dental implants are an option for people who have lost a single

tooth or multiple teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or

some other reason.

The dental implant itself is made of titanium - a very strong,

corrosion resistant, natural element that is perfectly biocompatible

with bone. It therefore makes an ideal root replacement (anchor) for

your missing tooth. The implant is placed within the upper and/or

lower jaw to act as a direct or indirect anchor for your replacement

teeth.

Your new titanium root not only prevents the receding of your jaw,

but actually reverses it by stimulating new bone growth in your jaw.

Implants help keep the natural look of your face and lips, avoiding

the ‘sunken-in’ denture look many people experience as their jaw

deteriorates with age.


A conventional denture rests on your gums - which often causes slippage or can

cause pain when biting on hard foods.

An implant-supported denture on the other hand, is held firm by being

attached to titanium implants that are placed in your gums, providing you with

the greatest stability possible while allowing you to eat almost any foods you

love. And because implant-supported dentures are secured, they don’t shift

or slip and alleviate most of the common and painful complaints caused by

conventional dentures.

Types of Implant-Supported Dentures:

What are Implant-Supported Dentures?

Beach Denture Clinic recommends three types of implant-supported dentures:

• Permanent Teeth-in-a-Day (also known as All-on-FourTM)

• Bar-Retained Overdenture• Ball-Retained Overdenture


Permanent Teeth-in-a-Day (All-on-FourTM) — This system uses only four implants to secure a special

denture that looks and acts almost exactly as your natural teeth. It is less invasive and in the end,

a much faster procedure when compared with traditional implants. Your new implant-supported

denture is immediately placed over the implants minimizing swelling and virtually eliminating

downtime. It provides you with the ability to smile and

start using your new teeth - on the same day.

Designed in Europe, Permanent Teeth-in-a-Day has

gained popularity through their successes worldwide.

It is considered the most advanced tooth restoration

procedure for people who have lost all their teeth or have

failing teeth that need to be removed and simply don’t

want to wear dentures.

How Does it Rank?

On a scale of 0-100 (with 100 being your natural, secure teeth), dentures rank at 15. Permanent Teeth-

in-a-Day rank at 95 – the most stable, secure, and comfortable of all implant solutions. And yes, it can

all be completed in one day, followed by two or three follow-up appointments.


Bar-Retained Dentures — A thin metal bar that follows the curve of your jaw

is attached to two to five implants that have been placed in your jawbone.

Clips are fitted to the either the bar, the denture, or both. The denture fits

over the bar and is securely clipped into place by the attachments.

How Does it Rank?

On a scale of 0-100 (with 100 being your natural, secure teeth), dentures rank

at 15. Bar-Retained Dentures rank at 80 – with much higher stability and bite

force than regular dentures.

Ball-Retained Dentures (or “Locators”) — Each implant in the jawbone holds a metal attachment

(male) that fits into a similar attachment (female) on the denture. In most cases, the attachments on

the implants are ball-shaped. The attachments resemble the ‘snap-on’ buttons common on blouses.

How Does it Rank?

On a scale of 0-100 (with 100 being your natural, secure teeth), dentures rank

at 15. Ball-Retained Dentures rank at 60, depending on the number of locators

chosen (Four locators and up is typical for added stability).


How do you know you are a candidate for implant-supported dentures?

If you are currently wearing dentures, are they

feeling less than satisfactory? Uncomfortable,

3 No More Sore Spots. Removable dentures can cause inflammation of the mouth tissues that are under the denture itself,

particularly if not removed every nightly and not cleaned daily. Because your implant supported

replacement teeth don’t rest on your gums you don’t

develop uncomfortable sore spots.

4 Stimulation of Bone Growth.Dental implants, like natural teeth, help to stimulate bone

growth through the titanium implants. These posts act as

‘nerve-endings’, which your body believes is a real tooth,

helping stimulate and preserve your jawbone rather than

erode it with dentures. You will begin to look and feel

years younger.


5 Improved Chewing & Digestion.Good digestion and enjoyment of food begins with the breaking down of food and combining it with

the enzymes found in your saliva. With implant-supported dentures you will be able to chew your food

better and subsequently experience better digestion. You’ll also find that you can enjoy eating the

foods you once avoided.

6 Improved Taste Sensation.Since dental implants are held securely to your gums, there’s no need for that ‘suction’ action on the

roof of your mouth like in a regular denture. Implant-supported dentures don’t cover the roof of your

mouth, so those vital taste receptors remain open to taste. Food tastes like food again.

7 Long Lasting.With proper care, implants can last a lifetime, and

since implant-supported dentures are securely

attached to the implants and not removed nightly

or for cleaning, there’s virtually no chance of them

getting lost.
