Hello there...
After months of cold weather and empty beaches, it’s finally time to welcome back the season of sunshine and sunscreen: the spring.
This means more live music at venues on the coast, more sea-food specials at beachside ha-vens and of course, visitors that seem to outnumber the grains of sand.
The promise of fun in the sun draws students of all ages from across the country to our Gulf sands during spring break. This time of year brings a boom to the local businesses, but those busy days and nights — along with the traffic — may leave some wishing it were back to the slow-as-molasses winter months.
But with travelers impressed with the white beaches, the acclaimed seafood and the constant fun, locals can’t help but get a sense of pride when they get the chance to reply with, “I live here.”
I’ve had my share of the seasonal slump, and even if it means a little more (or a lot more) traf-fic, I’m welcoming the spring with open arms.
It’s that time of year when spring breakers re-place snowbirds and the snow days are replaced with sandy, sunburned days on the beach.
I’m headed there to get a spot.

The legendary Interstate Mullet Toss and Gulf Coast’s Greatest Beach Party returns to the Flora-Bama
April 25-27 for a weekend filled with bushwhackers, oyster shuck-in’ and of course, mullets.
Held on the last full weekend of April, more than 35,000 people flock to the Flora-Bama to celebrate the fish, not the haircut.
This year, the 30th annual Mul-let Toss falls on the same weekend as the 50th anniversary of the Flo-ra-Bama, making the well-known honky tonk even more rockin’ than usual.
To celebrate the 50th anniversa-ry, the Flora-Bama has some special plans in the works.
“In terms of the 50th anniversary as a whole, we’re
trying to get one of each spirit (vodka, beer, whiskey, etc.) in a Flora-Bama 50th anniversary spirit that we will have available for purchase throughout the year,”
said Jenifer Surface-Ivey, marketing director of the Flora-Bama.
Don’t just come thirsty for bush-whackers at the event — come hun-gry, too. The Flora-Bama isn’t limit-ing its beachside smorgasbord.
“We will have our full oyster bar open, so we will have every-thing that’s normally on the menu, including hamburgers, chicken fingers and oysters,” Surface-Ivey said.
Live music will be on all three stages all day, every day during the event.
The Mullet Toss will be held on the sands in front of the Flora-Bama, where the tents, bikinis and coolers will make the ultimate beach party.
A SANDY CELEBRATION OF
The Miss Mullet bikini contest is held inside the Flora-Bama every day of the event. The contest gives participants a chance to win a cash prize.
FISH TOSS RULES• No stepping out of the circle during
your throw and follow through.• Throwing a mullet out of bounds
results in disqualification.• There will be six finalists in both the
men’s and women’s divisions each day.• Winners of the male and female
divisions will receive a trophy and a Flora-Bama gift certificate.

The Alabama Side - $3 per person The Flora-Bama Bus will pick up at Publix, Orange Beach The Florida Side - $3 per person The Flora-Bama bus will pick up at Winn-Dixie in Perdido Key
Participants of the Mullet Toss will compete in throwing an approximately one-pound dead mullet over the state line of Florida and Alabama to see who can toss it the farthest distance. Tossers will throw from a 10-foot circle on the Alabama side.
The Mullet Toss brings in travelers from across the globe every year to congregate for the one-of-a-kind event.
“The money raised at Mullet Toss goes toward help-ing the communities with drugs and alcohol abuse, re-covery, advisory groups or things related in the com-munity,” Surface-Ivey said. “Each year, the Mullet Toss donates $20,000 on average to charity.”
If you attend, make sure to actually throw a mullet. “So many people come and just have the big party
and never actually get to the toss,” Surface-Ivey said. “If you’re going to come experience it, you have to do that.”
ABOVE: Participants stand on the Florida side of the line and toss into Alabama to see who can get the most distance.

It was a beautiful summer morning when we leftFairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. Wewere on ourway down toOrange Beachto check outa businessthat many ofour friendshave told usabout, thisEnglishmanwho hadopened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughterEmma. My hair is very important to me and getting agood haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones isknown for and excellent hair color to boot.
We have both been very dissatisfied with the last fewattempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; mostof the so called stylists did not take into considerationour age or understand that we both want to look greatwithout a lot of fuss and bother.
The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on time to this charming yellow and whitebeach house on the beach road with a fabulous view ofthe Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthonyand Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drinkor a glass of wine before he started making us beautiful.
Pam, my friend, went first since I was a little chickenafter the last experiences. Anthony directed her to astyling chair andwent on toexplain the tenmost importantrules in designinga customhairstyle to suither. He firstlooked at her faceshape andexplained thatthere are fiveface shapes outthere and toldher her face shape was oval. The next was bonestructure and head shape, after that was the type of herhair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of conditionher hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows outof the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikesand fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right.
So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo anddeep conditioning, then for the next 30 minutesAnthony’s hands were a sea of motion, lastly a quickblow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she wasfinished! She was so happy and she could not believe thedifference in her hair.
Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer
gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out therefor my hair with no success! Anthony explained thatcommercial hair products are made different toprofessional hair products. Commercial shampoos aremade of mild detergent and the conditioners are basedon petroleum oil. Where professional hair products arepure and natural and give back to the hair, he also wenton to say that we should all wash our hair every day andcondition our hair the same.
Anthony explained that at all times our hair has tohave at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, weshould treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin,by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense tome, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hairevery day because in her mind it would dry it out.Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug storeproducts would dry your hair out if washed daily. Afterwe went through the ten rules, he took me to theshampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo andconditioning my hair had ever had.
While shampooing, Emma explained to me what Ishould do in the morning in the shower, again stressingno over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair isdry and frizzy. After shampooing and beforeconditioning, towel blot the hair because the hair isporous like a sponge, putting any conditioner on one’shair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself,so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in whileyou are washing yourself. Then before you leave theshower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just
rinse the excess andno more.
After sheexplained to me thehows & whys, Iunderstood. Theyare like hair doctors,if we listen and dowhat they says itworks! Anthony hashis own line ofproducts andeverything he usedon me was his and
believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me waswonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam,no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great productbefore he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with alot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought abottle. Best money we ever spent and yes, we aredefinitely going back. He is a true professional.
Well worth a visit!Anthony’s Salon is on the beach road inOrange Beach; their phone number is

We’re finally seeing some warmer weather. Spring-time opens all of Mobile Bay to some of the best in-shore fishing there is.
In and south of the bayThe fourth month of the year is a fantastic month to
be on the water in and south of Mobile Bay. The first place I drop my anchor is on all the inshore
reefs south of Point Clear. Most of the specks left in the rivers will be moving south and will always hang around these reefs to feed.
I would use live shrimp under a popping cork and pop until my arm falls off. Just make your cork sound like a fish hitting a surface bait.
This month will also be a prime month for top water baits. Try the same reefs you fished with popping corks. If the reefs are void of speck action, then move south to the gas rigs. The depth is too much for popping corks, but slip corks work great. Just cast up current and allow your bait to float with the current toward the legs of the rig or any pilings near the rig used to tie down the crew boats or other larger boats.
On the lower end of the bay - Dixey Bar, Ft. Morgan
On the lower end of Mobile Bay, try fishing the piers and old pilings along Ft. Morgan Road. Gulf Shores Marina is also a hot spot for larger specks and flounder. Just be sure not to get in the way of boat traffic coming in or out.
Spend some money there and you’ll help keep the peace. The condo just east of the marina will also hold fish this time of the year. If that’s slow, then move out of the bay and fish the beach just east of the Dixey Bar.
As you go by the Ft. Morgan boat ramp, chunk a few shrimp or plastics around the pilings. While on the beach, fish a shrimp-baited line on the bottom. Pom-pano will also be on the beach this month.
If you catch some crokers inshore, keep them alive if you can. You can use them on some heavier line while drifting on an outgoing tide, and you may hook one of those hard-fighting bull redfish in the 20-pound range.
In the spots on the lower end of Mobile Bay, you should be able to boat a good many slot redfish around all the marina pilings as well as their rock jetties. The water around the outside of the jetties is only around three feet — a perfect slot redfish hangout.
The condo should be fished from the outside as they dislike non-renters fishing around their piers. All the others piers should be fished with all the respect you can show to the pier owner. Try not to lose hooks on top of the pier, as someone may step on it, which does no good to the owner and fisherman relationship.
Scattered in the bayTrout should be scattered all over the bay this time of
the year, and they hang out in large schools. It’s easy to load your fish box with them.
Remember to know the creel limits and keep only what you want to clean.
Flounder are moving into the bay this month and all of these redfish spots could be holding some real door mats. Flounder will eat shrimp and plastics, but I think bull minnows are the best bait. All and all, April is a fine month to fish the bay, near shore or offshore. As usual, know all the limits and rules of the road. Watch your wake and keep only what you’ll clean after a long day on the water.
Stay safe,
251-550-5418Life is good and so is the fishing.

Jim Trelford and his wife Pat are loyal summer visi-tors who have been coming to the Island from St. Lou-is and Mobile for more than 30 years.
Jim was born in 1937. After high school, he went into the Navy and was trained as an aerial photogra-pher. He had hoped for pilot training, but he was color blind. Completing his Navy commitment, Jim went on to the University of Missouri and graduated with a degree in business fi-nance and economics.
While in college, his twin sister set him up with his future wife, Pat.
They have been married for 52 years.
From college, Jim was hired by Benefi-cial Insurance Group. He also decided to enter a program that would lead to a law degree. He applied and was accepted. When he was offered a job in Mobile, Pat jumped at the oppor-tunity, while Jim was somewhat hesitant.
Neither had been there, but they knew it was close to the wa-ter and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The couple ended up moving, and Jim stayed with the com-pany until 1978.
Pat went to work with Ideal Cement Company. They sup-plied cement for much of the Interstate sys-tems, including Inter-state 10 and Interstate 65 in the area.
While in Mobile, they had three children.
After several years in Mobile, Jim began thinking about leaving the company and eventually had job of-fers from several other insurance companies.
His company, knowing he was thinking of leaving, offered him a job in St. Louis, and in 1970, the family moved back. Jim was assigned a desk job, but he knew they’d one day be back on the Alabama Gulf Coast.
After 42 years in the insurance industry, Jim retired.
He and Pat stayed in St. Louis, spending time in Gulf Shores during summer va-cations.
Jim and Pat’s children love it here. They remember as children crossing the swing bridge to get onto the island. They remember
the uncrowded beach-es, the beautiful waves and the white sugary sand. They also have many friendships that were developed dur-ing their growing up years in Mobile.
The family came to the beach every week-end. Now, they come down whenever they can get away.
Jim, Pat and the kids have strong mem-ories of the beaches, the A&W stand and the arcade.
Back then, they’d be sure to leave the is-land by 2 p.m, because with the swing bridge, it took more than an hour just to get from the island up to Span-ish Fort during the summer months.
Although he was born in 1937, Jim is not the kind of guy to lie around. He and Pat keep active with their daily walks. Jim enjoys a round of golf, and Pat plays bridge.
Jim and Pat en-joy sharing time with their family as well as a multitude of Gulf Coast friends. Jim is proud of his children and loves them dearly.
One never knows who you’ll meet on
the island, but sometimes a wrong turn will lead you to new friends. Jim and Pat are the kind of people that you can’t help but like, and who make me proud to be on the island.
Capt. Mark asks, ‘Who’s on the Island?’

cOWBOY JOHNSON
MuSICIAN SPOTLIGHT: COWBOy JOHNSON By Destiny Brown
Local guitar picker and bluesman Cowboy Johnson takes his music to stages up and down the Gulf Coast. Cowboy gives some insight on his craft and the music scene.
DESTINy BROWN: When did you discover your love for music?
COWBOy JOHNSON: From the time I was 5, I would go to my parents' friends' house who were in a touring gospel quartet. They would practice and I would sing along with them, and that's how I leaned how to sing. I left home at 15 and went to work for a farmer in Minnesota who knew a little bit of guitar. He taught me the basic initial chords, and there I was.
DB: When did you begin playing at venues?
CJ: I've been playing at venues since I was 17. I've had a lot of bands; R & B bands, country bands. I know my name is Cowboy, but it's just a nickname. Most of my stuff is more of a blues type.
DB: When did you move to the Gulf Coast?
CJ: After playing in Texas for 15 years, I moved here four years ago. I brought my late friend Mickey Newberry's mother here a couple weeks after Ivan, and I've been involved with the Frank Brown Songwriters Festival every year since then. It helped me get my foot in the door playing at the festival year after year. I was grandfa-thered into the Frank Brown Songwriters Festival because I had a tribute album of Mickey's songs.
DB: Where do you currently play on the Coast?
CJ: I play at Flora-Bama two to three times a week, the Pleasure Is-land Tiki Bar on Canal every Thursday and some Fridays and Happy Harbor on Marina Road on Sundays.
DB: What are your future plans for your music?
CJ: Soon, I'll be on the road for the month for a midwest tour. The only CD I have of originals is two or three years old. I'm going to the midwest in May and playing from Denver to Chicago with old friends that used to be in my bands.
DB: What is your favorite part about playing music on the beach scene?
CJ: Everywhere you go, people support it and come out to listen. They actually come for the music and don't just come to the bar to party. I appreciate that. It's rewarding and satisfying and makes it worthwhile.
DB: What advice would you give to a singer/songwriter?
CJ: I don’t like singers that try to simulate other people. I don't want to hear some other guy try to sound like Garth Brooks. Just sing in your natural voice and be who you are.
ABOVE: Cowboy Johnson at the Flora-Bama Yacht Club.
RIGHT: Johnson plays at Pleasure Island Tiki Bar in Orange Beach.

Country stars lined up for concert at the Wharf
F or the second concert of 2014 at the Amphitheater at The Wharf, a trio of country superstars are lined up to take over the stage.
Headlining Darius Rucker and featuring Corey Smith and the Eli Young Band, the musicians bring a once-in-a-lifetime concert that features a combination of their Nash-ville and Texas Country hits to The Wharf.
Darius Ruckern It was a shock when you found out his real name wasn't
Hootie. Darius Rucker, former lead singer and guitar-ist of the band Hootie and the Blowfish, began his mu-sic career in 1986 with his famous band with hits like “Breakfast at Tiffany's” and “Hold My Hand.”
n In 2008, he continued his music career solo. He co-wrote with Clay Mills and recorded his first solo single, “Don't Think I Don't Think About It.” The song debuted at No. 51 on the Billboard Hot Country Sound charts and made him the first African-American singer to reach Top 20 since Charlie Pride in 1988.
n His second album, “Learn to Live,” was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2009 and received a platinum certification.
n His next singles, “Alright” and “It Won't be Like This for
Long,” also made the top of the country charts.
Corey Smithn Corey Smith is popular for his songs about his college
days at the University of Georgia and spring breaks on the Gulf Coast, like his hit “If I Could Do it Again.”
n The Georgia artist recorded his first album, “Under-tones,” in 2003, which included one of his most popular songs, “Twenty One.”
n In 2005, Smith recorded his second album, “In the Mood,” which includes hits like “Drinkin' Again” and “It's Over.”
Eli young Bandn Members Jon Jones, Chris Thomson, Mike Eli and James
Young began their musical journey while attending col-lege together at North Texas State University.
n The Eli Young Band has three No. 1 hits under its belt as well as a Grammy nomination and an Academy of Country Music Award for Song of the Year for its hit “Crazy Girl.”
n The band has recently released its second Republic Nashville album, “10,000 Towns.”

art streetGCAA Gallery begins
in Gulf Shores
By Destiny Brown
The Gulf Coast Art Alliance (GCAA) brings creativity outreach to the community through frequent art markets, events and its newest ad-dition, the GCAA Gallery.
Bringing a new art gallery to the communi-ty, the GCAA Gallery sits on E. 24th Ave. along the brick sidewalk across from Acme Oyster House and in sight of the beautiful canal.
Renovating the building for the GCAA Gal-lery, which was formerly a church, took a lot of dedication and TLC.
“We've been looking for a year and nothing became available, and then we heard about this,” said Maria Bastin, chairman of GCAA. “We're excited to be here because we love the location. When we told the city, they were re-ally excited because art is their goal and their vision for this street. We're excited to be a part of that and to be the first art place here.”
The GCAA Gallery will allow regional and local artists of all trades to showcase, promote and sell their work.
“We invite all the local artists and everyone to come,” Bastin said. “All of the artists love it, and the community and visitors love it. It's a place they can come and view the local art and even get some to take home.”
Artists have to pay a fee to display their work, but if they volunteer to work a certain number of hours at the gallery, their fee is re-duced.
GCAA also reaches out to younger artists by pairing with Kaleidoscope for kids art classes.
“We're going to have Kaleidoscope Satur-days every week, where we will have a proj-ect for kids,” Bastin said. “This summer, we also plan on having some kind of summer art camp.”
There will also be art classes at GCAA. “Tommy Vogel will be coming and teaching once a week, and he teaches pastels and draw-ing,” Bastin said. “We will have one day for open classes and hopefully a photography class.”

Artist Spotlight:
Among the artists who will be exhibiting and demonstrating is lamp worker Dan Rush. Rush learned early in life not to be afraid to try something new, es-pecially if it would help express creativity. His current interest in glass began about 10 years ago.
“I was soon captivated by the craft of making beads with a torch, which is called lamp work-ing,” Rush said.
His work has since expanded to include creative glass sculp-tures and pieces of glass artwork. Rush is also pastor at Crosswinds Church in Gulf Shores where his congregation has become in-volved with helping teach chil-dren’s art projects at the GCAA Art Market.

GCAA Gallery will host art walk once a month.
Gulf Shores High School art class is involved with GCAA. The school showcases the students' artwork at ev-ery art market.
“Austin Boyd brings the artwork for his class, and we let them come and show for free,” Bastin said. “The high school wood shop will also be making projects to come sell at the art mar-kets.”
Depending on the number of volun-teers, the GCAA Gallery plans on be-ing open six days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 or 8 p.m.

Italian, Japanese, Mexican, pizza, deli-style sandwiches and more.
