The most critical need at this juncture to launch a pack at our church is to secure a Cub Master. If you have been in scouting before, or not, but are at a place in life with the requisite time I’m sure you will feel rewarded by the experience. The position can be filled by a man or woman of legal age. The last piece is to let you know the church windows of the sanctuary need to be replaced. There are some who have expressed a desire to replace them with stain glass. Now is a good time to take up a conversation toward that end. The trustees have requested, and the council in turn agreed, to seek to have a church conference to give the trustees guidance on the decision the trustees felt should not be left to them alone. Our District Superintendent, John Boggs, has authorized the conference to be held following worship services on Sunday August 30 th in our sanctuary. All are welcome to participate, voting is limited to professing members of the congregation, but this process allows more to be involved than a typical called charge conference. I look forward to seeing you in church! Pastor Warren Owens

Dear Friends of Marion First UMC,

Thanks so much for the welcome to our new home. It’s been a swirl the past

month of unpacking and adjusting, which followed a couple of months of

packing. The questions that begin with “where is…” are beginning to taper

off some. We like what we have experienced thus far in the church and

community as you write a chapter of our lives, which for the moment is strewn

around in bits and pieces.

So this month I share with you bits and pieces of things for you to be aware of.

One is supporting our elementary school neighbor, and I have been able to

meet with Mr. Slagle to share with him our desire to lift the school up in

prayer on a date to be announced. Also, perhaps you have participated as a

prayer partner here at church and the possibility exists for similar connections

to occur with the teachers and staff on a voluntary basis. Some of you are

aware of the feeding programs in other counties that go beyond the school

walls in joint efforts between schools and churches that provide lunches

throughout the summer for kids. You will hear more about those opportunities

as we explore how best to partner with the school district.

Of course the time is upon us to work with children through our VBS as its

beginning is just a week away. There are always numerous ways to be in

involved in making a VBS a positive experience in the faith life of a child. If

you are so inspired, please contact Anita to let her know of your desire, even if

you are clueless as to what you would like to help with. Along the way, I have

witnessed VBS to have a positive impact on kids, parents, volunteers, and the

church.

In a year round opportunity to work with children, we could use a volunteer to

pursue becoming a Cub Master as part of our charter. There are many parents

each year who seek out a pack to join because of the life-long benefits

scouting offers. The most critical need at this juncture to launch a pack at our

church is to secure a Cub Master. If you have been in scouting before, or not,

but are at a place in life with the requisite time I’m sure you will feel rewarded

by the experience. The position can be filled by a man or woman of legal age.

The last piece is to let you know the

church windows of the sanctuary need to

be replaced. There are some who have

expressed a desire to replace them with

stain glass. Now is a good time to take

up a conversation toward that end. The

trustees have requested, and the council

in turn agreed, to seek to have a church

conference to give the trustees guidance

on the decision the trustees felt should

not be left to them alone. Our District

Superintendent, John Boggs, has

authorized the conference to be held

following worship services on Sunday

August 30th in our sanctuary. All are

welcome to participate, voting is limited

to professing members of the

congregation, but this process allows

more to be involved than a typical called

charge conference.

I look forward to seeing you in church!

Church Conference Meeting

On Sunday, August 30 (right after the worship service),

there will be a brief Church Conference Meeting to decide on replacing the

existing church windows with either stained glass windows or frosted and

tinted windows. Please put this date on your calendar!

To our church family: Thanks so much for all of your prayers and support for our mission trip this year! We had a blast, and we saw God move in mighty ways in Nashville! It is always a privilege to be the hands and feet of Jesus to others, and we thank you for

all of the ways you allowed us to do that!

High School Bible Study

High School Youth!

Don’t forget that we are now meeting on

Wednesdays at 4 pm for Bible Study .

Vacation Bible School

VBS is almost here! This year’s theme is “Everest...Conquering Challenges with God’s Mighty

Power,” and is open to kids ages 3 through those who have just completed the 5th grade. Also, VBS wouldn’t be the

same without our fantastic volunteers! If you would like to join the fun, volunteers (and children who are

participating) can register online at www.marionfumc.com/vacation-bible-school, where there

will be a description of each volunteer opportunity.

Youth Lake Party

It’s that time of year! Rising 6th

graders are invited to join the

youth at the lake for our last big

bash before school starts!

Mark your calendars for

Sunday,

August 23rd, and watch your

emails for more details!

Wonderful Wednesdays Wednesday night Faithweaver Friends activities

for ages 3 through 5th grade will resume on

September 9 from 6-7 pm. We hope you’ll join

us as we learn about God’s amazing love through

crafts, games, and music!

Us

The FUMC Mission and Outreach Committee is always looking to help our community.

With the start of school approaching, we are looking to

support McDowell High with travel size hygiene items and flip flops. Recommended donations are:

tooth brushes, toothpaste, body wash, washcloths, deodorant and

adult size flip flops. Please contact Karah Wilson at (828)778-8761 or [email protected]

with any questions or ideas. Please drop off donations in the big yellow box outside Pastor

Warren’s office.

The Methodist Men are planning to have short sleeve shirts with the Cross and Flame logo made up for any that want them. A sign up sheet is in the office for you to place your name, the number of shirts you would like, and the size. The cost of the shirts will be $27 each and you don’t need to pay until they are picked up. In order to get this price, we need to order at least 20 shirts. There is an example shirt in the office or you may have seen several men that still have a shirt from a previous order. We hope lots of folks will consider placing an order. The Methodist Men meet the second Sunday morning in each month at the Steakhouse on the 5 lane at 8 am. We have breakfast, a short meeting and great fellowship. All men in the Church are invited to attend. Come join us!

Congregational Care Committee

The Congregational Care Committee seeks to care for the needs of individual members and families, and

serves to equip our congregation to care for one another. We provide meals, local

transportation , and for those who are home bound or in nursing/assisted living facilities, phone calls and direct contact

through our visitation teams. Our committee is able to provide these areas of service through the continued commitment

of our congregation here at FUMC.

if you are aware of anyone needing our care by calling Debra Boldon

There are several openings on the Flower Calendar for the next couple of months. Please call the church office if you

would like to put flowers on the altar in memory or in honor of someone special.
