Discover Georgian Bay Today

Beacon Bay puts you on the doorstep of the finest freshwater boating in the world. Want to explore the bay but wondering where to go?Locally there are lots of interesting destinations:l A lovely day trip to Giant's Tomb to splash and play in the shallow waters.l Book tickets to a play at King's Wharf Theatre in Penetanguishene with docking steps from the door. l Want to experience a sensational sunset? Consider anchoring in Twelve Mile Bay.l Explore the Moon River by dinghy while anchored in Port Rawson.l Hiking and biking trails abound on Beausoleil Island National Park and there are plenty of protected bays perfect for anchoring or pay a fee and use one of the park docks. What about the west side of Georgian Bay? For a change of pace, plan to take a longer trip and visit Wingfield Basin, Meaford or Wiarton or other destinations such as:Thornbury is about 40 nautical miles from Midland with a good beach, excellent restaurants and interesting shops.Venture further afield to Lion's Head (about 47 NM from Hope) for festivals and other family fun.Make a week or longer trip and head to Ontario's scuba diving capital of Tobermory (about 68 NM

from Hope). Go ashore and explore some of the interesting hiking on the Bruce Trail.Or for something more, set your sights on Mackinac Island where motorized vehicles are banned. (About 120 NM from Tobermory.) This is American waters so ask us what you need to be prepared for this adventurous trip. We're boaters too and we're happy to share our knowledge, expertise and recommendations with you when you're planning this year's boating adventures whether it's a day away or an extended trip to the amazing North Channel.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor.

BEACON BAY DOCK TALK BOAT SHOW NEWSLETTER| BEACON BAY DOCK TALK BOAT SHOW NEWSLETTER|

I have been sailing since I was 11 or 12 years old and simply cannot remember a better sailing season than the one we all enjoyed in 2018! The weather was incredible! I personally logged more nautical miles on my own boat, a C&C 33mkII sailboat, than the previous two summers combined. I keep my boat, Diapason, at Mimico Cruising Club in Toronto where I have been a member for 14 years. Diapason is as unique a boat name as is its meaning;

di·a·pa·son/ˌdīəˈpāzən,ˌdīəˈpāsən

D i a p a s o n s o r p r i n c i p a l s r e p r e s e n t t h e characteristic sound of the pipe organ. They are not intended to imitate any other instrument or sound. They are medium-scaled and are often prominently featured in the façades of pipe organs, often painted and decorated. Diapasons appear throughout the entire range of the instrument, from 32' pitch to 1' pitch.

Diapason is truly a unique sound, and a very unique boat! I think that you'd be hard-pressed to find another sailboat named Diapason too! Unfortunately, I am not an organist, but I do have a keen interest in the engineering and history of pipe organs, as well as the incredible music they produce. The C&C 33mkII is a very fast racer-cruiser and although my racing days aboard Diapason are in the past, I still actively race on a friend's boat each season in long-distance races including the LO300 (the longest, freshwater sailing race in the world) and the Susan Hood Trophy Race. At one point, way back in 2000, I purchased my first boat; a 26' sailboat, which I kept down the Bay at Dutchman's Cove Marina! I sailed in this area for five years before relocating

the boat (my second boat at the time; a Catalina 27) down to Toronto. While there are no immediate plans to bring my boat back to Penetang, you never know what the future holds!

My working experience in the Marine Industry is even more diverse than my sailing background! As a Civil Engineer by training, I eventually transitioned from being a Project Engineer with a heavy civil contractor (wastewater plants, reservoirs, etc.) to Project and Service Management in IT, working for such companies as Ingram Micro, GE IT Solutions, Compaq and Hewlett Packard. In the back of my mind, I had always wanted to work with boats and finally made the move by becoming a Yacht Broker for Swans Yachts in Toronto. Within three weeks of starting there, I assumed the role of Operations Manager, drawing on my background and eventually became VP of the company. My experience in Service Management and Operations is what kept me in the Marine Industry and brought me to Beacon Bay Marina. I hope to bring some new ideas to the fantastic Team that we have to help make Beacon Bay Marina the best marina in the area!

I look forward to meeting all of our customers over the course of the 2019 Season and invite you to share with me, any ideas that you feel would benefit the marina and your fellow Beacon Bay Boaters!

Nestled at the end of Penetang Bay, Beacon Bay Marina is a short walk away from the town's waterfront Parc Rotary Champlain Wendat Park which includes plenty of family fun for those evenings you stay onboard at the marina. Here you'll find a splash pad, skate park, play structures, historic plaques, a walking trail complete with fitness equipment, rollerblade trails and bike paths. You can even walk or bike (or take the dinghy) to the world famous Dock Lunch for fries, burgers and ice cream. Nothing says summer like fun food!

Throughout the spring, summer and fall watch for Penetanguishene's weekly farmers' market on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It's an excellent way to stock up the galley with farm fresh flavours from early June through mid-October.

Bayside Summer Soiree livens up Friday nights in July and August with live music, entertainment and outdoor movies starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Amphitheatre on the waterfront.

A short ride up the bay is Discovery Harbour, the War of 1812-era recreated naval and military establishments. Along with daytime tours of the historic site and tall ships, Discovery Harbour is home to evening ghost tours in the summer, the swashbuckling fun of the Pirates of the Bay event

in August, the award winning Pumpkinferno in October and an ice skating trail and other outdoor activities in the winter.

You can even boat over to take in a show at the 364-seat King's Wharf Theatre beside Captain Roberts Table restaurant at Discovery Harbour. The 2019 schedule of live theatre includes Jack and the Beanstalk: The Panto (June 5-22); Glory (June 22-July 6); Disney's Beauty and the Beast (July 11-Aug. 10); Shear Madness (Aug.14-31). For tickets go to www.draytonentertainment.com and click on King's Wharf Theatre.

Just around the bay, this summer will see the Tall Ships Challenge Ontario sail in to Midland, Aug. 9-11, 2019. Expect battle re-enactments, tours of the visiting tall ships, live entertainment, food, lumberjack competition, buskers and other family friendly events.

Take a trip on the TrentThis year, explore the Trent Severn Waterway

The beauty of being a Beacon Bay boater is our location puts you in the heart of the 30,000 Islands. However, there is a whole world to explore. For an adventure that is completely different than boating on Georgian Bay, why not make 2019 the year you chart a course to the historic Trent Severn Waterway? The 386 km long waterway is an interconnected set of lakes and rivers linked by traditional locks, lift locks and the one-of-a-kind Big Chute Marine Railway that allows boaters to travel from Lock 45 at Port Severn all the way to Trenton on Lake Ontario.Along the way, interesting towns, attractions, restaurants and scenic anchorages await as boaters travel through Lake Couchiching, Lake Simcoe, the Kawartha Lakes and more.

Several go-to resources like www.trentsevern.com can help you plan your trip with a free toolkit that helps you figure out the time to travel various portions of the Trent Severn as well as lots of information on attractions, towns and restaurants along the way.In recent years, Parks Canada (that operates the Waterway) has offered free lockage days. Details for 2019 have not yet been set. The updated information, including fees and hours, will be posted on the government website at www.pc.gc.ca/en/lhn-nhs/on/trentsevern Ask us about the charts needed for this trip!

Beacon Bay staff are becoming Safety First Marine Specialists trained to help you, our boaters, be knowledgeable and safe on the water. It's a comprehensive program created by the Canadian Safe Boating Council that not only helps boaters understand the basic safety equipment requirements but takes you well beyond, with additional information to help you return safely to shore.Did you know that 40% of boaters set out without legally required safety equipment? Do you know what equipment you need for your particular boat? We do. And we can help you keep your family safe on the water with the right gear for your boat. We can also help you select products designed to enhance your chosen boating activity whether it's relaxing at a secluded anchorage without power, towing the kids behind the boat or fishing from the dinghy. In addition to required safety gear, Beacon Bay stocks a number of items that are 'smart to have aboard' for increased enjoyment and safety while boating. We encourage our boaters to log onto www.safetyfirstmarine.ca to learn more about this program.Safety on Board: Cell phones aren’t VHF RadiosA smartphone is no substitute for a marine VHF radio. Phones are “narrowcast” devices and can’t broadcast your call for help, so nearby boats won’t hear your call or know you need assistance.

Even if you know and call the local Coast Guard they usually have no way of knowing where you are unless you tell them, and if your mobile phone call is dropped, they may be unable to call you back. Mobile phone range is often no more than a few miles, compared to handheld VHF’s distance of 20 or more miles. Don’t take chances and delay the arrival of the rescue you need. With your VHF radio you can call the Coast Guard directly. The Canadian Coast Guard provides 24-hour monitoring on VHF Channel 16 Emergency VHF Calls you should know:May DayIn a life-threatening distress situation, select VHF Channel 16, repeat MAYDAY three times and then state: Vessel Name; position; number of persons on board.;Nature of your Distress; Assistance requiredPan Pan (Pahn Pahn)Urgency signal “Pan Pan” repeated three timesAnnounces an urgent message, a request for assistance if a boat or its crew is in danger, but the situation is not life-threateningUsed to gain attention of other vesselsSecurité (Say-cure-it-tay)Safety signal message “Securité” repeated three times. Announces important information, such as a warning to other shipping. Examples: Dangerous debris in the water; Intention of large vessel to get under way

Safety On BoardBeacon Bay staff are happy to help you and your family stay safe on the water

If you find yourself in trouble on the water, do you have what it takes to keep you and your crew safe?

Unfortunately 40% of boaters head out on the water without all of the legally required safety equipment.

Winter is the perfect time to tune up your on-board safety equipment.

BEACON BAY DOCK TALK BOAT SHOW NEWSLETTER| BEACON BAY DOCK TALK BOAT SHOW NEWSLETTER|

I have been sailing since I was 11 or 12 years old and simply cannot remember a better sailing season than the one we all enjoyed in 2018! The weather was incredible! I personally logged more nautical miles on my own boat, a C&C 33mkII sailboat, than the previous two summers combined. I keep my boat, Diapason, at Mimico Cruising Club in Toronto where I have been a member for 14 years. Diapason is as unique a boat name as is its meaning;

di·a·pa·son/ˌdīəˈpāzən,ˌdīəˈpāsən
