Cover Project

STEP 1. To make thesemi-precious and shamballa style ovalflowers: Cut 6 x 10cmlengths of wire for each flower.Use round nosed pliers to curlthe end of each wire (leaving onethe end of each wire (leaving oneuncurled for the centre of the shamballastyle oval flower). Thread a bead onto eachwire so it stops at the curl you made. For the centre of the shamballa style ovalflower, glue on a half-drilled bead using Fevi Kwikglue. Place all wires for the flower you are workingon together, with the beads at the top. Twist together to secure, and move the petals if necessary. Wind the ends ofon together, with the beads at the top. Twist together to secure, and move the petals if necessary. Wind the ends ofwire around a pen or pencil to create a loop and wrap the ends back around the base. Cut off any excess wire. STEP 2. To make the shamballa style heart flower: Cut 5 x 15cm wire and 1 x 10cm wire. Thread a shamballa style heart onto a 15cm wire and position in the centre. Bring the wire down to meet at the point at the bottom of the heart and twist the two ends together. Repeat to create the 5 petals. Take the 10cm wire and glue a half-drilled beadonto the end. When dry, position this in the centre with the petal beads around it. Hold all the wires together just onto the end. When dry, position this in the centre with the petal beads around it. Hold all the wires together just under the beads and twist together. Create a loop as in Step 1. STEP 3. To make the resin clay (centre) flower see p. 18. To make the glass beads flower see p. 14. See p. 15 for further details on the seed bead flower and p. 22 for the wire flower.

STEP 4. Once you have made all your flowers, thread them onto approx. 24” of 6mm leather cord using the loops you have made. Position the flowers as you wish, and when you are happy, use flat nosed pliers to ‘squash’ each wire loop around the cord. This will crimp your flowers into place.loop around the cord. This will crimp your flowers into place.

STEP 5. To finish, use Fevi Kwik glue to attach a 6mm magnetic clasp to the ends of the leather cord.

Shamballa Style

Shamballa Style BraceletHow to...STEP1. Cut a 40cm piece of shamballa style cord. Measure around 10cm fromone end and tie a knot. Put a safety pin through the knot and attach to a beadmat. Posititon so the long end points towards you, and the short end points awayfrom you. Put a dab of nail varnish on the end of your thread to make threadingbeads easier. Now cut another piece of shamballa style cord approx. 1m in length. It is always better to overestimate the length to make sure you don't run out of cord!Find the centre of this cord and tie around your original cord, as close as you can toFind the centre of this cord and tie around your original cord, as close as you can tothe pinned knot (see pic 1). STEP 2. You now need to tie a square knot. Place the left thread over the centrethread & under the right thread, making a 4-shape (pic 2). Now take the right thread & post the end underneath the point that the centre and left threads cross. Bring it up through the loop & pull both your outer threads away from each other to tighten(pic 3). This creates half a square knot. To complete the square knot, do the same (pic 3). This creates half a square knot. To complete the square knot, do the same thing starting from the opposite side. So, take the right thread over the centre & under the left, creating a D-shape (pic 4). Take the left thread under the point the middle & right threads cross, & bring up through the loop. Pull tight as before (pic 5). Repeat this process until you have created approx. 3 square knots, then thread a bead onto the centre thread. Bring the outer threads around the bead and continueknotting. Add 1 or 2 square knots between each bead and keep going until you have added 7-9 beads. Tie 3 square knots after the last bead (pic 6).added 7-9 beads. Tie 3 square knots after the last bead (pic 6).

STEP 3. Cut off the outer threads leaving approx. 2mm either side. Glue the ends tohold your knotting. You can also singe the ends with a lighter, but take great care ifyou choose this option. Now turn your bracelet over. If you are adding a slider, thread either end of your centre thread through the slider in opposite directions.Take a new piece of cord approx. 1m long and tie over BOTH centre threads. Tie afew square knots before the slider, then bring the cords around the slider as you didwith the beads earlier (pic 7). Tie another few square knots after the slider, then secure with the beads earlier (pic 7). Tie another few square knots after the slider, then secure the cord by glueing or singeing as before.

STEP 4. Finally, thread a small bead onto each end tofinish them off. Knot either end to keep the beads on.The knot with the slider should allow the two ends toslide through so you can make the bracelet largerand smaller. Find out how much you need to openthe bracelet and make the ends just a little longerthe bracelet and make the ends just a little longerthan this, then they won’t dangle too much whenyou are wearing the bracelet.7

STEP 1. Select a pack of each of the glass flowers & divide into 6 piles, including both colours in each pile. Thread one pile onto a reel of gunmetal wire followed by a large filigree flower. STEP 2. Thread on the second pile followed by a large golden crystal flower. Continue in this way until you have added all your beads to the reel of wire.

STEP 3. Twist the end of wire so the beads don’t fall off. Working backtowards the reel, pinch a small flower bead and twist the wireto make a stalk approx. 3cm long. to make a stalk approx. 3cm long.

STEP 4. Repeat Step 3 doubling up the small flowers onsome stalks. Continue until all beads are twisted onto wirestalks. About 25-30cm from the end, bend the wire andbring it back on itself. Twist so the wire fixes together.

STEP 5. Keep folding the wire and twisting together untilyou have one piece of thick, twisted, beaded wire approx.25-30cm long. Position your stalks as you wish to get the25-30cm long. Position your stalks as you wish to get thebeads in the right places.

STEP 6. Putting the wire section to one side, create a kumihimobraid using a warm neutral rattail cord set. For full instructions on kumihimo braiding see the kumihimo starter kit or visit Beads Direct TV on YouTube. One set should create about the right length of braid on a simple 8 warp braid.

STEP 7. Whip (or secure) the ends of the braid. I used nymo thread and stitched it in to the braid as well as wrapping around for extra security. Trim the ends of cord just above the whip. Full instructions on how to whip a braid are provided in our starter kit.

STEP 8. Glue an end cap from your findings kit onto each braid end so it covers the whips. Use the oval rings to attach a toggle clasp once the glue is dry.

STEP 9. Take your wire section and intertwine with your braid. Twist some of the small flowers from each end up the edges of the braid.

STEP 2. Lie your fabric chain flat and decidewhere you would like to place your charms.

STEP 3.STEP 3. Attach the charms and beads using jumprings or headpins. Charms usually work best with jumprings andadding multiple beads to a headpin looks great. To add extra depth to the piece simply attach some of the smaller charms and/or beads to some bronze chain before attaching to the bracelet.

STEP 4. If you are using the Fimo Roses in your design you will need to place a bead on the headpin before addingthe rose. This will stop the headpin from slipping straight through the Fimo Rose. Tie some small ribbon bows around the fabric chain to add more detail.around the fabric chain to add more detail.

STEP 5. To finish, attach one half of the magnetic clasp to each end of the fabric chain using jumprings. It’s best to leave this until last as the magnets can get in the way when making your bracelet.

Stringing Materials

See back cover for 5 fantastic offers!

Betty Bead browses through your BARE NECESSITIESI'm back again to help you with stringing. I’ll tell you how to know your wires from your cord, and make sure the only stringing materials youget round your neck are made into beautiful necklaces!

Jewellery Wire looks like wire but acts like a thread. It is commonly used because it is stronger than thread, but it can’t be knotted so you will need to finish with crimps. Can be used withmost beads! From £2.36 per reel.
