The Curriculum at BCA

KEY STAGE 3 (YEAR 7 & 8) At Key Stage 3 we offer our students a full range of subjects with afocus towards GSCE outcomes. The curriculum places high importanceon the value of excellent oral communication so all studentsin Year 7 and 8 have discrete oracy lessons. As asignificant number of students enter the academywith depressed literacy levels additional Key Skillslessons are in place that focus on the areas ofreading, writing and oracy. Our lowest abilitystudents are also taught Humanities through anIntegrated Curriculum in two nurture groups thatare allocated one teacher each based on aprimary school model. The curriculum at KeyStage 3 continues to offer students a broad andbalanced diet that gives them access to the coresubjects of English; Maths and Science; theHumanities; Expressive Arts and Modern ForeignLanguages. At the end of Year 8 students opt for their KS4courses that include a range of GCSE and Technical qualifications.

KEY STAGE 4 (YEARS 9, 10 AND 11) Students in Year 9 are offered the opportunity to refine the subjectsthat they specialise in by following one of three option pathways:EBacc (approximately a third of students at KS4 study this pathway) ,Academic and Academic/Vocational. All students study GCSEs inEnglish, English Literature, Maths, Science and a Humanities subject.

These are then supplemented with three options from their chosenpathways. The three option pathways offer a comprehensive range ofacademic and technical subjects that include: Business Studies,Performing Arts, Creative iMedia, French, Engineering, Health andSocial Care, PE and Art. Mostly these subjects are delivered through aGCSE syllabus with some BTECs and Vcerts. The option pathways alsoallow our most able students to opt for three separate sciences as partof a more challenging academic pathway. To maximise the performance

of our least able students within the core subjects of English and mathsthey are provided with additional support in these areas instead of athird option choice.

Tutor Groups and Teaching

TUTOR GROUPS

The highest priority is to make sure that each tutorgroup is cohesive and when students join theacademy Tutor groups are allocated by thededicated and experienced Transition Team whowork alongside the primaries throughout theacademic year. Pastoral care and guidance at theacademy is excellent and students enjoy positiverelationships with their tutors who are the firstpoint of contact for any issues that may occur.

We have three full time Pastoral support assistanceswho are available to support students and who workclosely with the Progress Leaders for the year group to.Progress leaders focus on the “five pillars” of every student, attainment, attendance, behaviour, punctuality and rewards.

“The behaviour of students is good. Students have played an integral partin the transformed culture of the academy. Students behave well in lessons;they are pleasant and polite. They take pride in their academy uniform andin the academy environment.”

TEACHING GROUPS

At the start of Year 7 students will be placed into ability groups across thecurriculum. The setting of groups is based upon outcomes at Key Stage 2but also uses scores from Cognitive Ability Tests. These are online testscompleted at the Academy following the allocation of a place. Cognitive Ability Tests are used to give a snapshot of a child's potential, what they could achieve and how they learn best. They form part of ourdata collection process and ensure that students are allocated to the correctteaching group on entry.
