Middle School Corner

The middle school choir and handbell students will be participating in two really neat events in March! Today, March 3rd, both the Trinity (grades 3-5) and the Troubadour (grades 6-8) choirs are visiting Concordia University Irvine for their annual Choir Festival. The choirs will have the opportunity to sing for the guest director and receive feedback, tour the campus, eat lunch and play games with the Concordia student leaders. It is always a wonderful day! A little later in the month on Saturday, March 14th, our Advanced bell choir will be attending the Handbell Festival at Concordia University Irvine. They will also have the opportunity to play for a guest director and receive feedback, tour the campus and participate in a mass ring with bell choirs from other schools. “Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.”

It’s Golf Ball Drop Week! It’s also Science Fair and Open House week! Lots going on in our home – and probably yours too. This will be one of those weeks that I will be glad to just make it through my long list of tasks and events scheduled. So, let’s collectively decide to be easy on ourselves and our kiddos and enjoy the madness and rush, because that means that we are blessed to be growing our brains in education and spirit (and patience!), to have a school family that is active, thriving and healthy and to have family and friends that will join us this week to see our campus and achievements. Enjoy an easy dinner while wrapping up the science fair board, listen to your child rave about the fun time they had at the choir festival, and put off a chore or task until the weekend. Whatever it is, know that we WILL make it - so breathe easy, friends! And, a week that ends in firefighters and a possible big money win can’t be bad either! Am I right? See you Friday!

BAKE SALE Bethany’s Student Council is

holding a bake sale all week to raise funds for a tetherball set. Bring your quarters and help

support! (Love to bake? Bring in some items for the Council to

sell! Items should be individually-bagged and

ready for sale.)

Operation Christmas Child Shoebox gifts travel to the ends of the earth. Many children around the world have never heard the Gospel message of eternal life in Jesus Christ. They live in hard-to-reach, poverty-stricken communities, where parents struggle to provide for basics. Rarely, if ever, do children receive a present that's just for them. This year, more than 10.5 million children in more than 100 countries and territories received shoeboxes full of special gifts. And for the first time, many of these children heard that God loves them. In preparation for our November 2020 school packing party, would you help us collect combs and hairbrushes during the month of March. Items can be dropped in the school office. During the months of January and February, we collected bars of soap (no liquids), washcloths, and toothbrushes. We could use more of these items, as well.

March 3, 2020 Dear Parents, The third quarter ends on March 20. Parent/Teacher conferences for Grades K-8 are scheduled for Thursday, March 26 and Friday, March 27 (Please note: School dismisses at noon both days.)

The purposes of Parent/Teacher Conferences are to celebrate successes, review progress and encourage

student academic growth. In addition to report cards, teachers will also review MAP test scores in Grades 2-8. This year we are using an online signup system for conferences. Each conference will be 15-20 minutes long and may be scheduled between 1:00-7:00 on Thursday, or 1:00-3:00 on Friday. (Several teachers have other options as well. If none of the published times work for your family, please contact your child’s teacher to make alternate arrangements.) Middle school parents should plan to meet with their student’s homeroom teacher. You may also sign up for conferences with other middle school teachers as needed. You will sign up online to schedule your conference: https://pickatime.com/bethanylutheran

Note that you can have the system send you reminders, make changes to your appointments and print out your conference schedule.

Blessings on your week! Dr. Mary Fink

February 28, 2020

Dear Bethany Families, Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 As you are likely aware, on Tuesday, February 25th, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) gave a press conference updating the country on the current status of the coronavirus (COVID-19), and what steps should be taken moving forward. We wanted to share with you some of the steps our school is taking to prevent the spread of illness across our campus, and plan for the possible spread of the coronavirus in our community. As the CDC emphasized, there is not currently a coronavirus pandemic in the United States. A pandemic occurs when a disease is spreading from a variety of sources across a large region and the number of cases across the US is still small. However, given how quickly the global situation is evolving, we are monitoring new developments and will continue to reevaluate our steps and actions daily. In the meantime, the most effective way to stay healthy and minimize the spread of infectious disease is to follow basic health best practices:

• Enforcing great hygiene, such as washing hands thoroughly, using hand sanitizer and covering up coughs/sneezes.

• Asking all faculty, staff, and students who are feeling ill to stay home until they recover. • Keeping sick children home until they are fever-free for 24 hours without medication.

Good hygiene and handwashing, healthy eating, and avoidance of large crowds/unhealthy places are key to staying healthy – for this and any virus. Bethany Lutheran is prepared to alter procedures and planning should the situation change. We are also thinking ahead regarding the impact spring travel, upcoming school trips, and other non-typical school activities will have in the context of the coronavirus. We will communicate any changes when the time is appropriate. It is important to remember that handling the spread of a serious contagion like the coronavirus is primarily a task for public health agencies. Any directives from the World Health Organization, CDC, or our Long Beach Health Department should be followed. In times like this, we are particularly grateful for the strength and togetherness of this community. Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. Psalm 91:1-3 Sincerely, Dr. Fink
