President’s report

Hello all,

2019 is certainly quickly flying by, as June arrives in less than two weeks time. It will possibly be colder, but the winter solstice also happens. I find this to be a positive thing as, every day after it, becomes a little longer, light-er, brighter and in my view better.

I thought our May Club meeting went very well. Just goes to show how quickly our Committee members can think on their feet. Bravo, bouquets and applause to VP Ian Bowden for stepping up to the plate. He took the place of the external speaker at VERY short notice. Ian, with his usual flare, aplomb and humour, provided us with an excellent, insightful account of the Sydney iconic firm W. C Penfold and his time spent there.

Thank you to all those, especially our newest member, Irene Adams, who came to see POMS, our first Club movie outing. There is also a special mention for Trevor Bland. He found himself surrounded by an absolute bevy of beauty. However, I did notice that he smiled a lot. FYI, I intend to organise another movie outing in June and will email everyone as soon as I can arrange the date. Just have to ensure it doesn’t clash with any-thing else which has been arranged.

You’ll find we have a lot more activities in the coming months. So, please keep your Newsletter close to hand. It’s a great reference tool which will help you track the scheduled date of outings and when payment is required. It’s also listed all the contact details of whom you should contact if you have any questions.

I’m in the home stretch and there are three more things that I need to ask and reinforce with you, before I close. Surprise, surprise... they all begin with “please.”

Please wear your badges at Club Meetings Please place your apologies for your inability to attend a meeting within a timely manner to our Membership

Officer. Please come and talk to me at our Club’s monthly meeting’s morning tea or lunch. I really do try to

acknowledge and engage with many of you, but it would help me immensely, if you make yourself known to me.

Yesterday Australians voted, the election is now closed and the decision about whom we want to govern our unique, amazing wonderful country was made. Onwards and upwards and here’s to its every future success.

Carpe Diem and Warm regards

Kris.

Don’t forget

The Northwest Metro starts on Sunday 26th May. Trips on this day will be free but big crowds are expected for the first trips starting from 11am so consider waiting until later in the day if you are keen to be one of the first.

Vivid starts on May 24th every night from 6pm and finishes on 12th June. Sydney will be transformed with light projection shows on various buildings and landmarks such as the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.

You can even combine the experience of using The Metro to go to Vivid

City to Surf – Aug 11th 2019

Last year Stephen and Lee Thomas with Ian Bowden went in the City to Surf. We were in the “walking” group. It takes about 2hr to 2hr 30 min depending on your pace. You can walk at your preferred pace be it “social” or “competitive”.

Stephen and Ian are going in again this year. We travel in together and start together, then go your best. We get together after the finish line.

It would be great to a have a few more (Male or Female) to join us.

Maybe it is something on your “bucket list”. After finishing you get a ribbon and medal. Great to show the grand-kids!

If interested you can register on the City to Surf website (Orange Group) and we can arrange to meet in due course.

It is not as hard as you may think – Take your time and be a “winner”

This is NOT an official Probus Function

See you there

Ian and Stephen

Public Transport Timetable Changes

As you are aware, the new Northwest Metro will be opening soon. When it does, there will be some changes to heavy rail and local buses to better integrate the services. For detailed information specific to your individual needs, go to https://transportnsw.info/service-adjustments-2019 .

In the case of local buses, not all routes are affected but you should be aware the changes may include some of the following:

• Some bus routes will have new numbers. For example the M60 becomes the 600 and the 661 will become the 671. It requires you to pay attention

• Some route itineraries will change to better service Metro stations. For example the T60 will be diverted via Norwest Boulevard to service the Norwest station

Bus time tables will be adjusted to reflect: changes to itinerary, changed service frequency, new services, and brand new bus routes.

There are further changes forecast as the system is “optimised” so keep a close eye on what is happening and remember:

TOO MUCH PLANNING IS BARELY ENOUGH!

Always confirm you plans via the https://transportnsw.info/ website. Both the current timetables plus those starting on 29/5/19 are available here.

It appears the plan is to phase out the Metro bus service. As stated, the M60 becomes the 600. Similarly the M61 becomes the 610X etc. It seems that politicians feel if we were silly enough to vote for them, we are too silly to know the difference between a bus and a train! Are they right? This article was written prior to the Federal Elec-tion – so you decide!

Happy OPALing,

Allan Collins

CHEESE AND WINE NIGHTS (or days)

Everybody loves our Cheese & Wine get togethers but we are desperate for volunteers to host this year. Unfor-tunately, the May event had to be cancelled and at the moment we only have a commitment for August.

We are asking members to consider helping out to keep this tradition going. It may seem overwhelming but the club can supply the glasses and members are more than happy to cover the costs you may endure. Sausages on the barbie or pizzas ordered in and everyone is happy.

If you are able to offer your home please contact Jenise & Bruce McCredie

LAST MONTHS GUEST / INTERNAL SPEAKER

The Guest Speaker we had arranged for May arrived at the hall ready to speak at 9.30, half an hour before the meeting started.

Ian Bowden, who had agreed to be the Internal Speaker, stepped up and filled the void for us and he enjoyed the fact that he would have the extra time to speak. He spoke about the old Sydney firm W.C Penfold, who also happened to be Ian’s place of employment for many years.

The company origins trace back to William Moffat who aged 20, was transported to Sydney for stealing tea in his home town of Liverpool, England. William had a background in bookbinding and was put to work as a bookbind-er and archivist in the new colony. He completed his 7 year sentence in 1828 and he elected to stay in Sydney.

William Moffat met his wife, 16 year old Mary, in 1829, when she arrived as a free immigrant and they married soon after. Together, they produced 6 children but unfortunately 3 died of in early childhood. William started a Bookbinders and Stationers business in George Street, which flourished for 50 years under his control.

Edwin Thomas Penfold arrived in the colony to try his luck on the goldfields but instead he established a tobac-conist shop in Sydney. In 1886, the son of Edwin named Willian Charles, brought the bookbinding business from the ageing William Moffatt and he renamed the business WC Penfold.

The business flourished and as well as selling stationery items they also ran a printing and publishing section and they revolutionised the business when they imported linotype printing machines which resulted in WC Penfold becoming the leading printer and publisher in NSW.

The business survived into the early 2000s and many Sydneysiders remember seeing the WC Penfold horse and cart making deliveries around the city, a clever ploy as the horse and cart could not be receive parking fines, and it also provided huge advertising for the company.

Ian informed and entertained us with his presentation, which was accompanied with many photos, and we thank him for his efforts.

GUEST SPEAKER NEXT MONTH

The story of Billy's Books Sixty-five-year-old Ritchie Cotton wears many hats. He’s an ex-butcher, a part-time actor, a father, a husband and children’s book author. Eleven years ago, after his job was restructured, Richie was inspired by his toddler son, Billy, and decided to turn his hand to writing books for kids. Each of his books features 23 little rhymes and is illustrated by his wife, Rhon-da. Several years later, the couple has produced two books and had 10,000 copies published which have been sold to 500 schools. The books are called Giggly Times and Giggly Rhymes volumes one and two. Richie has also been a guest speaker at 20 Probus clubs so far and has another 50 speaking spots lined up for this year. “I write like a kid,” says Richie of his success. “There’s a golden rule to kids’ books: you need to think, behave and write what they understand. Kids don’t have a great attention span, so I make 23 different little stories and it exercises their imagination.” “Poetry went away for a while, but it’s back in the school curriculum now. It’s music without instruments. Stories are easy to understand if they rhyme".

“Books will never die for kids because when they read, they’re interacting with their parents or grandparents and it becomes really personal,” he says.

Ritchie Cotton is our guest speaker for June and his topic is "Creativity after 50".

Cheers

Harry
