VISTAS Happy New Year!!! The ball has dropped, the corks have popped, and the fireworks have exploded, ringing in a new year. You may have even sung a version of “Auld Lang Syne.” It is based on a poem by Robert Burns that calls us to remember times gone by, and those old acquaintances that we have forgotten about over the years.
The change of the year calls us to look back and evaluate, and then look forward as we make resolutions. It is a time for stories of what was, and dreams of what might be. It is a time for discussion about what happened, and shared visions of the future. It is a perfect time for the third step of the FAITH5 to be implemented (if you haven’t already!). After sharing highs and lows, and then reading a Bible story to remind us of the grand story of God’s work in the world, the third step is to discuss how the story might relate to the high and lows that were shared. It is an opportunity to reconnect to the Biblical story, and see how the scriptures are not just old stories of time gone by, but an ongoing engagement of God with God’s people across all time. Doing it together allows for a diversity of viewpoints of the text. It allows a chance for people to share their story and interpretation that will, once again, connect you with a God who is present and active. It gives you a chance to ask the most Lutheran of questions, “What does this mean?” (as it applies to your life and the highs and lows of the day) A conversation over the Bible story allows all of you to realize, not only God’s presence and power, but your own power to read and relate the Bible to life! It shows you the most important thing to learn about the scriptures; that they are not just old stories of the past, they are also your story of a future with hope. That you are a part of the story! You are a continuation of life and the promise of God to be with you. You are now an actor, and a partial author, of the ongoing saga of God’s people in the world. So I invite you to share the highs and lows of your day with those close to you. Read a Bible story, any story. Then talk about how that story may relate to your highs and lows. If you do that, you are more than halfway through a FAITH5. The FAITH5 is a daily discipline that will do so much for you and those you do it with. It will help you appropriately deal with, and celebrate, times gone by. It will be a constant reminder of God’s presence in your life. It will tie you together even closer, bonded together in the love of God.

WHAT’S HAPPENING
A new service is offered at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church the 1st Wednesday of each month at 6:00pm. Taizé is a unique worship experience started in France that is known for its distinct and beautiful style of modern chant and song. Combining a beautiful candlelit ambience with simple meditative prayer, it is a warm and welcoming service to all who search for peace and spiritual reflection. The simplicity of the service makes it an excellent choice for experiencing “church” in a community setting regardless of your faith background. Taizé was created in the 1940s by a monastic community in France and has an international following. All are invited to experience the simplicity and welcome of the Christian faith. To learn more about the beauty of this service please visit us at www.beautifulsavior.net or in person at 7570 N. Thornydale Rd. Tucson, AZ 85741.

For this season, and for the rest of the year, would you be interested in giving the gift of yourselves? We are looking for people who would like to visit people. There are two different groups, depending on what you feel called to do. One group are visitors, especially to shut-ins. Their job is to be a regular visitor to sit and chat with those who don't get out much. If you would like to just go and talk with people, contact Janice Molina about the "Hi there!" ministry by email at [email protected]. If you would like to bring a word of prayer and communion to those in the hospital, or those shut-in, we are looking for 'Deacons' to assist in sharing God's promise and presence through the blessing of prayer and the gift of Holy Communion. If you feel called to this ministry, please contact Pr. David at [email protected]. Training will be provided in January.

Winter Session of Adult Education-
For the Winter session, I am going to introduce another class that takes us back to the basics of
Christian Faith. I have led two different “Animate” courses, one on Practices and one on the
Bible. This one is about the foundations of Christian belief. “Animate: Faith” is a video driven
course that discusses some of the basics of Christian belief and faith (church, salvation, cross,
God, Jesus, bible, religion). It runs for seven weeks, and it will run from the last week in January
and finish the middle of March. Cost is $15 for the journal.
The next class after that will be the Lutheran 101.

ACADEMY NEWS
The Simply Giving® Program endorsed by Thrivent Federal Credit Union
Would you find it helpful to have your offerings drawn from your bank account as you do other monthly drafts? The Simply Giving Program endorsed by Thrivent Federal Credit Union is for people who wish to have offerings transferred electronically to their church’s account. You do not have to be a Thrivent member or use their financial products to participate.
This is especially helpful for people who travel and want to keep their intended offerings up-to-date, rather than making up the difference later. Members at Beautiful Savior have enjoyed using this convenient giving opportunity for years. Contact the church office for more details.
Want an easy way to do your commitment? Offerings can be scheduled on-line through Simply Giving.

Tax Season is just around the corner. Make plans to take advantage of the Arizona Private School Tuition Tax Credit! Contributions can be made by mail, by calling, or online. The deadline for participating is April 15, 2015 to be eligible for 2014 taxes. Brochures are available in the narthex with a contribution card attached. For more information, contact the Academy at 579-1453. Funds provide scholarships for children to attend our Kindergarten class and ensure they receive a Christian education.
Happy New Year! I hope that all of your Christmas wishes came true and that you “Keep the Christmas Spirit” throughout this New Year! With each New Year come new opportunities and I want to invite all of you to consider taking advantage of the Arizona Private School Tax Credit. As most of you know these tax credits provide much needed scholarships to our kindergarten students. We currently have ten of our twelve kindergartners on partial or full scholarships. And this year saw a slight increase in our enrollment. Let’s keep up God’s work and help more families be able to make the choice to send their child to Beautiful Savior Academy’s kindergarten program. There are brochures in the narthex with more information regarding this opportunity. Please look for the blue pamphlets labeled ACSTO. And remember your contribution is tax deductible dollar-for-dollar on your Arizona State Tax return. I know it sounds too good to be true, but it’s simply a way to reallocate your tax dollars towards education in our state. And by doing so, you are helping young families provide a solid Christian foundation for their children. Thank-you for considering this opportunity and if you have any additional questions please check the Arizona Christian School Tuition Organization website at www.acsto.org or call me at 579-1453. On behalf of your Academy staff, we wish you a very Happy New Year! Blessings, Rhonda Karrer Director

Re-gifting
Did you receive a gift for Christmas that you did not need? Did you re-gift it to someone else? Re-gifting, once frowned upon, has become an acceptable practice in recent years.
Re-gifting has always been acceptable to God. When blessed by God with more gifts than we need, He asks us to share those gifts with others and especially those in need.
After a lifetime of accumulating assets, we may have more assets than our loved ones need. If you have been blessed in this way, you have an opportunity to joyfully re-gift some of those assets to the continued work of your Lord and Savior here on earth.
We call this type of re-gifting, “planned giving”. With the help of our ELCA Regional Gift Planner, Greg Shepherd, you will be shown ways that you can re-gift to the church and other charities without reducing your gifts to your loved ones. You will also learn ways to reduce taxable estate assets, and at the same time, be able to provide for ministries for which you have a passion. Create your legacy!
To learn more, you may contact Greg at: (909)910-6823 or [email protected].

Happy New Year BSLC friends, I can’t begin this year without reflecting on the old one. Looking back at 2014 here are some of my “highs.” January started with a visit from
Don’s sister and her husband. They were in church the Sunday that Gerry first proposed the Germany trip so they signed up right then and there. It will be fun to travel with them. Being part of a successful VBS session was rewarding. Working with old and new friends toward a common goal made it even more so. Summer brought a visit to my home town and 10 precious days with my aging mother. She still knew me but didn’t remember that I’d been there. That’s OK. That’s what cameras are for. In early September our second grandson, Andrew, finally joined his 2 1/2 year old big, brother William. What a joy to witness our daughter’s caring parenting skills. I hope some of that she can say she picked up from me. Traveling to Colorado with church friends for the Cross Generational/Faith Five workshop was a treat. Unexpected reconnection with several old friends was a bonus. We managed two camping/hunting trips this fall. The last one in December was the best. Got my elk. She’s now in the freezer. Ivories are in my special jar. Thank you God for the many blessings in my life. May God’s peace be with you all. Joan Swanson
