If their punishments seem too much, maybe an insight into what they have been through would make you feel a little better. The punishment that I still remember was given by my accounts teacher, who made me write the entire chapter for not an- swering a question. For the next two years, I never gave him a chance to reprimand me and excelled in the subject. The con- cept of ‘No Punishment’ just does not work, especially in cases of high risk behaviour such as bullying, violence, damage to school property, substance abuse and the like. The severity of the punishment should be based on the magnitude of the mistake.Punishments help set limits, which not just inculcates a sense of responsibility in the child, but also helps develop a balanced personality. However, before meeting out a punishment, one must try to know the exact cause of misbehavior. Sometimes, a child may be troubled with a disturbing atmosphere at home or maybe dealing with psychological issues. Also, one must remember that the same punishment may not work for every child. A punishment should be given in ac- cordance with the behavioural pattern of the child. Being too lenient or too strict, with a child could put him/her into severe difficulties in his later years. It is for this reason that a balanced approach on part of the au- thorities as well as parents is a must. While punishments can be used as a limit defining tool, one must remember that children learn more from obser- vation than anything else. The authorities must practice what they preach in order to rule out any possibilities of error or misconduct. G T Poem Let us remember No school, under the guise of en- forcing discipline, should mistreat any student or parent. This must be strictly observed and enforced, not withstanding any eternal pressure. Schools are ideological institutions, not factories. They must treat chil- dren as sensitive individuals who need to be protected at any cost. The schools need to be aware of the sen- sitive and impressionable nature of the minds of school children, and must ensure that all students, irre- spective of differences in physical, social and economic status or being differently-abled, are dealt with in a dignified manner. Let us remember if a child lives with CRITICISM, He learns to CONDEMN. If a child lives with HOSTILITY, He learns to FIGHT. If a child lives with RIDICULE, He learns to be SHY. If a child lives with SHAME, He learns to feel GUILTY. If a child lives with TOLERANCE, He learns to be PATIENT. If a child lives with ENCOURAGEMENT, He learns to be CONFIDENT. If a child lives with PRAISE, He learns to APPRECIATE. If a child lives with FAIRNESS, He learns JUSTICE. If a child lives with SECURITY, He learns to have FAITH. If a child lives with ACCEPTANCE, He learns to find LOVE in the world. Shall I stand before thee face to face, Where the mind is without fear. G T T he word punishment itself should be abolished be- cause it has a negative conno- tation. Punishment should never be the first choice. In- stead, it should be the last re- sort. The child should be given sufficient warnings, which should be accompanied with counseling so that the child has a fair chance of rectifying himself. Punishments should not be given to teach the child a les- son, but work as corrective measures. A child must know why he is being punished in the first place. The punish- ment should, under no circumstance, humiliate the child and affect his/her EQ. Instead, the child could be denied something s/he loves, as a punishment. For instance, if a child has not been finishing his assignment and loves music, he could be detained during the music class to fin- ish the pending assignment. Or, the child could be given community service that would not just make him realize his mistake but also make him more compassionate. If a child has been making a mistake repeatedly, one must try to ascertain the cause of such behaviour. Sometimes, there are factors beyond school that could be responsible for the child’s misconduct. Besides, if we are giving punishments, we must also give rewards. If a child has been punished on grounds of mis- conduct, he must also be rewarded for good behaviour. Sometimes, a pat on the back is all a child needs. G T Should punishments be given? If yes, then to what extent should it be implemented? Do the punishments really help achieve their purpose ie rectify faulty behavior? Or do they only leave the recipient with sour memories? Punishments…the most hated wordin the school vicinity. But, this wordis not a newbie in the school prem-

ise. It has been there forever, even whenyour teachers took to the other side of thetable, seated as prim and proper students.If their punishments seem too much,maybe an insight into what they have beenthrough would make you feel a little better.

Decriminalization of politics andelectoral reforms were some ofthe issues that were eloquently

debated during the valedictory functionof competition on legal reforms organ-ized by Amity Law School (ALS) onJanuary 20, 2012.The budding legal professionals fromvarious prestigious law schools sug-gested unified elections for parliamentand assembly apart from recommendingmore financial independence for theElection Commission. They also pro-posed making the source of donation re-ceived by political parties’ public and anannual audit by Comptroller AuditorGeneral (CAG) to keep a check on them.

The event saw Vivek Tankha, Addl.Solicitor General of India and RahulDev, CEO & Editor in Chief, CNEBsharing their views on the topic andemphasizing the need for youth tobecome active stakeholders in thecurrent democratic setup.Asserting that it was important for lawsformulated by the judiciary to come intoimmediate action Tankha said that therewas a dire need to put an end to mal-practices followed by political parties.He also highlighted the far reaching con-sequences of movements like those ini-tiated by social activist Anna Hazare. Soon after its launch, the club kickedoff its operation on December 21, 2011by holding an awareness program tosensitize people about the importanceof conservation under the guidance ofProf J C Kapoor, Director, AIES. Theprogram saw Maj Gen (Retd) K JSingh, Vice Chancellor AUUP and DrBalvinder Shukla, Pro VC (A), AUUPpledging their support to the cause.“The club believes that conscious effortsare needed to tackle pollution and othereminent threats to the environment. Itwould be possible to build a cleaner,safer and greener planet only if we firmour resolve to conserve water, reduce

We have all experiencedsome or the other form ofPunishment in our lives. Andwe love to narrate them toour little ones at every possi-ble occasion. We take pridein the lessons learnt and be-lieve that the same when ap-plied to the ‘Y’ kids, will

reap similar results. Nah! It’s time to wake up.Shake up. And introduce the new punishmentmantras with some innovative tadka.And so, let’s once again talk of this beaten-to-death topic - Punishment - imposed on us by ourelders at home or school that often leaves an in-delible mark on us. Do they? Last month, I wasat my niece’s house watching her struggle withthe homework of her kindergarten son. “If youdon’t study, you will grow up to be a sweeper,”she reprimanded her son, pointing at the sweeperwho was mopping the floor. The son raised hishead, gave a glance to the sweeper and buriedhis head into his books again. Five minutes ofstruggling with books, he looked at his motherand announced, “I can’t study. I am ready to bea sweeper.” Numbed by the reply, the motherlost her patience and forced the child into thebooks, only to complete the given task, cryingand howling. Punishment without the intended objective ofreformation is meaningless. It’s true that, what amere stare from your parents can do will not beachieved even by the severest of caning. Whileit’s important to feel the punishment to be ableto not repeat the same, it’s equally difficult forthe punisher to find the right punishment thatwould get him/her the desired results. In a way,both (punisher and punished) experience thepressure of the punishment. So, why bother andgo through this ordeal at all? Think it over! G T

Why Punish?

Punishments are often per-ceived as one of the harshestmeans of rectification or per-haps, teaching a lesson. But,they are not all that callous asthey are thought to be. Most ofus have learnt some of themost important lessons of life,by the way of punishments.

They teach us the right thing or lesson, eventhough the hard way. However, punishments may not always be theadequate rectification tool. Sometimes, they canbackfire, leaving one bitter than learned or a lit-tle enlightened. The end result of the punishmentgiving process depends a lot on the method cho-sen and its implementation.Punishments that deploy the rod or any otherform of physical abuse, for that matter, leave thechild with anything but a lesson. Has ruthless-ness ever lead to reform? Perhaps not. It onlyleaves scope for anguish or bitterness, not givingthe child enough reason to not make the samemistake again. A punishment if used construc-tively, can work as a corrective measure. And forthat it is important that we punish with the in-tent to reform and not to commensurate. Re-member, the idea to punish is to teach the childa lesson for life that will help him/her become abetter human being and not someone who nursesbitter memories or lessons. After all, punishments are a part of growing upand the learning process. G T

US, I am also breaking language bar-riers to help clear cultural miscommu-nications. My role as an Americanexchange student may appear trivial inthe vast bureaucracy of the US StateDepartment; but I know for a fact thatthe conversations I have with otherstudents, opinions I share with my hostfamily, and stereotypes that I break areshaping the perception Indians have ofAmerica. Some days when I sit in classwith our brilliant and very patient

Hindi teacher, Bhavna Ma’am, I can’tget a feeling of amazement out of myhead - amazement that while the restof my peers are busy taking challeng-ing courses at Walt Whitman HighSchool in Bethesda, MD, I am facedwith an even harder task. Every week, I teach students at Ami-tasha, another noble undertaking of Dr Chauhan, which gives education tounderprivileged girls in New Delhi. wonderful community. Every year when my highschool hosts exchange studentsfrom Germany, the Czech Re-

public, Paraguay and sometimes evenNorway, I remember thinking, “Dang!Those kids are brave. I can’t imagineleaving my family and friends for anentire year to go to a place I’ve neverbeen.” I had no idea I’d be doing justthat. Today, my fellow Americans andI take Hindi classes for about 3 – 4hours a day. We also take classes inPhysics, Indian dance, Indian music(I’m learning the sitar), art and claymodeling, Indian History, and we’vealso learned to type in Hindi (which isno small feat, believe me). We volun-teer at a place called Amitasha, which

is a school for underprivileged girls.We go there every Monday to thekindergarten and teach them songs like“Hum Honge Kamyab.”In India, I have seen a lot and done alot. I’ve been to Taj Mahal, LotusTemple and numerous Hindu temples,shopped in all the local markets, andtraveled all around Delhi by myself ina rickshaw. I’ve even taken the SATand ACT in preparation for college inAmerica next year. I’ve shared experi-ences with people and been in situa-

tions that never would have happenedin America. Being in a new countrywith new friends gives you a wholenew outlook, a whole new perspective.Being an exchange student givesteenagers a chance to live a differentlife, a chance to leave their comfortzone and travel to a new world. Theylive with host families and go toschool and make friends. They createties and bonds across the world, rela-tionship that can never be broken. It’snot only a breathtaking experience forthe student, but also for their teachers,friends, host family and anyone whotalks to them. The exchange haschanged my life, and I’m only halfwaydone. G T

This gradual change hasushered a consequential change in the definition ofpunishments and the contexts and extent, to whichthey can be invoked.Today’s generation represents individuals, who wishto evolve holistically – punishment included. Pun-ishments are all about reform and realization of errors.Doing away with them completely is certainly not a goodidea because the causes are still prevalent, though transformed incontext. In other words, naughtiness has evolved as well!So, here’s some insight into a few innovative and out-of-the-box punishments for today’s generation.

Dil mangey - Rewards first...As duties cannot come without rights, punishmentscannot come without rewards. Punishing a child forthe bad and not rewarding him for the good ones willonly mean a stroll for the authorities. If the authoritiesreally wish to go a long way, they must make rewards asstep 1 and punishments as step 2.

... But, innovative ones, only!The age old tradition of gifting books or a few wordsof appreciation is passé. Today’s generation is dy-namic and progressive, and expects their rewards tobe the same.The student who excels, academically or otherwise,gets an edge to be selected in the school student coun-cil or the chance to represent the school in international fo-rums, apart from some extra marks. Or maybe, he gets a day offto chill out as per his wish.A date with a renowned celebrity, a free library membership(just for the geeks!), permission to sport a funky hairstyleor coming to school in casuals for a week, or evensomething as meager as planning the school can-teen menu or the next examination datesheet...there are endless possibilities. Yes, it is farfetched but will deliver the desired results.Shalini Aggarwal, Teacher, AIS Gur-43 agrees, “Re-warding a child innovatively, not only boosts themorale of the child, but also instills a great amount ofself confidence, which no number of certificates canever do. Making the child feel special makes themhappy and motivates them to work harder every day.”The idea here is to realize that a reward should notrepresent mere symbolism or appreciation. It has tobe something a child enjoys, cherishes and cravesfor. Even if there is a possibility of the reward spoil-ing them, it will be outweighed by the urge and desire tosecure more, which will implicitly channel hard work and ded-ication to strive for the future.”

Again a thorny rose – Time to punish...Now that we are done with the motivating bit, it is time to come toground reality – rebukes! Well, there are a million ideas. For today’sgeneration, a punishment should be such that the individual may po-tentially never repeat the same mistake, or it should drive home thepoint of self realization. This could probably be done by imposing im-mense boredom, which is a threat to gen-next. The old paradigms ofinflicting physical pain are not only condemnable; they are an in-fringement on child rights. Let alone the potential to curb the psy-chological growth of the child! Here’s what can be done.

... It’s a Western idea, Sirjee!Here’s a formal, conventional, nevertheless a progressive idea.As oureducation system is adapting many things from theWest, why not apesome punishments, too? For instance, detentions, extra assignments,remedial schools, more project work, etc. But then again, where’s the

‘realization’ in these punishments? Students in the West detest themanyway, and eventually the same is bound to happen to Indian stu-dents…though it definitely can be an exciting prospect initially!

Try it out – Punishment with benevolence...Students who do something wrong could be asked to do somethingthey may disapprove of, but may be beneficial to someone else.A dayof social service for the poor children by teaching them or spendinga day at an old age home are some ideas. Such punishments will notonly help someone, but could also provoke the child to think differ-ently. Besides, they also help foster values like compassion.This aspect may also extend to instructing the child to plant tensaplings in the school or home premises; or learn a cultural dance ormusic form and give a performance in the school assembly within aweek; or participate in some cultural or community event. Thesemight not necessarily feel like punishments, but they will broaden the

horizons of the mind.

We get better-Things go extremeTheir pocket money could be suspended indefinitely – parents wouldbe more than willing to try this one! They could be given a free visitto the dentist or some other feared entity. For the intellectually in-clined, they could be asked to mug up the multiplication table of someincredibly large number. How about making a senior student recite anursery rhyme? Of course, some of these punishments may sound toosilly to be implemented, but they are sure to have an impact For thosewho doubt the success quotient of funny punishments, Archit Gupta,X B, AIS MV offers proof, “My friend in my evening tuitions afterschool, was talking in class when told not to. As a result, was askedto repeat ‘Sharam Karo’ 100 times. It was amusing, but I’d never doanything to get into such a situation ” The key idea is to have the childdetest the punishment without fearing it.

prayer and wished he had company inthis dark and cold night. However, onlyeerie silence greeted him.All of a sudden the street lights went offand darkness enveloped the entire area.He stood there frozen till the time powercame back. The screeching sound of anowl perching on a nearby tree made himjump out of fear. To add more to the hor-ror, a cat brushed past him forcing himto let out a scream and by the time he re-gained his composure, the beast had dis-appeared into the darkness. Suddenly, the lights went off again and itwas the soft tapping sound of the stick

that echoed in the air. Slowly, the soundkept growing louder and he could dis-cern the outline of someone walkingwith a stick. He turned around in alarmbut could not see anything. Soon an ad-vancing dark shadow of an old and frag-ile man came to picture.The sight made him take to his heels butapparently the other person was able tokeep pace with him. Panting heavily, heturned around only to see a wrinkledface of an old man with glaring yelloweyes and a noose around his neck star-ing at him. He made a dash towards hishouse and crashed into the arms of hissurprised mother.As he battled to let go off memories oflast night, the news of the suicide of anold man in the daily made him jump outof his bed. The report said an old manwas found hanging to death from a treeand the doctors had estimated the timeof death to be around 8 PM, an hour be-fore the incident took place. G T

The Christmas celebrations at AISVas 1 had students soaking in thespirit of the festival and celebrat-

ing it with fervour.The students of class III A and III C or-ganized a special assembly to celebratethe spirit of Christmas. The assembly,which began with a melodious renditionof Hindi prayer was followed by newsfrom across the globe.To set the mood for Christmas, childrendressed up as characters from the HolyBible like Mother Mary, Joseph, innkeeper etc and staged a play on nativity.The play ended with a beautiful Christ-mas carol ‘The Birth of Jesus’. The sig-nificance of the festival was highlightedthrough a beautiful power point presen-tation titled ‘The symbols of Christmas’.

However, it was the electrifying Bhangraperformance by the students, which hadeveryone clapping and grooving to thebeats. An enthralled audience joined theschool choir to sing melodious Christ-mas carols like ‘Rudolph the reindeer,Jingle bells’ etc.The students of class VII staged a playtitled ‘Angels onAssignment’. The playshowcased the story of events that led tothe birth of Jesus. It brought to light theexcitement that angels and other saintsfelt at the time of Lord’s birth.A short skit and a beautiful cultural pro-gram put up by the tiny tots of Nursery

and KG marked the Christmas celebra-tions in the junior wing. The studentsparticipated in the intra class gift wrap-ping competition, organised by theschool authorities to nurture their cre-ativity.AChristmas tree decoration com-petition was also organised.However, it was the surprise visit bySanta Claus, which lifted the student’sspirits to another level. The primary wing of Amity Inter-national School, Noida held aninter house English debate com-

petition on December 22, 2011.The competition saw students of classIII, IV and V debating vociferously ondiverse topics like sugar-friend or foe,heart versus mind and guns or roses. The students began with presenting theirviews pertaining both- for and against

the motion and then switched to ex-pressing their opinions. The arguments were backed by concreteexamples to substantiate the stand. Thestudents used every weapon in their ar-mour like factual accuracy, logical rea-soning and emotional appeal to justifytheir point and to earn brownie pointsfrom the judges. Each participant tried its level best toput across their point of view continen-tally and poignantly. G T

With sparkling sweat beads on his head andbrisk motion of a meteor Vijay Agarwal from AIBhas the power to mesmerise and leave the crowdflabbergasted. Rythmic FootstepsI started drumming at the age of 18, but I havebeen playing other percussions since I was 14.My father has been a great support all through mymusical journey. I gave my first stage performancein an inter-school music competition with myschool choir when I was in class IX. I playedcongo then. I do not have any formal training inmusic. I learnt drumming by going throughvarious DVDs and e-books on differentdrumming styles. I am a huge fan of SteveGadd and draw inspiration from hisimpeccable playing style. His tips havegreatly helped me in improving mydrumming techniques.

Musical connectI am very fond of Indian classical andArabic music, and try to find ways tofuse western and afro-cuban percus-sions into Indian rhythms. I am currently

trying my hands on Jazz and have a soft cornerfor bands like ZZ-top, Chickenfoot, Led Zep-pelin, The Doors, etc. I wish to turn my passion

into a profession. I am planning to pursue formal trainingin music and sound production after my graduation.

Drummer’s delightFor me music is the essence of life! Being a drummerbrings in a lot of responsibilities as the whole ‘band’ re-lies on you. I follow a strict one hour practice regimeeveryday which includes warm up for both hands andfeet, followed by practice of syncopated patterns in8th and 16th notes.

In love with ZehenI have been associated with Zehen, AIB’s offi-cial band from its initial days and I feel thesame as a gardener feels when he sees his roseplant blooming or garden flourishing. It feelsgreat to be associated with a home project.Ihave tried to nurture Zehen like my ownbaby. When I see Zehen getting recogni-tion throughout NCR, it feels wow. G T
