It was half docu- mentary and half drama, as it retold the stories of several ex- plorers who helped uncover some of the long-lost secrets of an- cient Egypt in the early 19 th and 20 th centuries. It was, of course, interesting to learn about some of these people, like the Frenchman Jean-François Champollion who in the early 19 th century translated the hieroglyphics on the Rosetta Stone and eventually developed the system by which all Egyptian hiero- glyphics were read. It was also interesting to learn about Egyp- tian history, but beyond that it was inspirational to learn of the obstacles these explorers overcame. Each one of the people that were highlighted in the se- ries overcame great challenges to become the scholars that we still talk about today. Each one could have turned back or taken the easy route numerous times, but they did not. Instead, they persevered in the areas and tasks that they felt called to, and in the end accomplished amazing things. One idea to take from this is that we should not back down from a challenge in life, but another idea is that there will always be challenges, even if we are doing the right thing. Sometimes we are fooled into thinking that if we only did everything right in our lives, then things would be easy. This, however, is not true; even when we are doing great things, which it seems we were destined to do, life is still hard. As we look at the lives of Christ and the disciples, here we see other people who did great things. They were clearly doing what they were supposed to do, what God had called them to do, and yet the world gave them obstacle after obstacle. Perhaps such a notion would get one down on life in general, but it could also be seen as uplifting. If we have struggles in our lives, it is natural, and Christ and the early disciples and all those who have followed God share in this. It is yet another way we are all connected. As far as why we have to struggle, who knows, such answers are above my pay grade as they say. I can tell you though, that a bit of struggle makes every achievement seem a bit sweeter, and certainly makes for a better story. Peace and Blessings, Pastor Brian

THE PASTOR’S PEACE Amelia and I finished watching a great miniseries re-cently that we got from the Internet. It was called “Egypt”, and was done a number of years ago by the BBC. It was half docu-mentary and half drama, as it retold the stories of several ex-plorers who helped uncover some of the long-lost secrets of an-cient Egypt in the early 19th and 20th centuries. Choir Resuming The choir will be starting up again, and I know we are all looking forward to that. Choir prac-tice will begin after service on Sunday Septem-ber 6th at noon. We will have practice every Sunday after that at noon. The choir will start singing in service on September 13th. As stated every year, all, and yes that means you, are in-vited to sing in the choir. You don’t have to read music, or even sing well, all you have to do is want to sing.

Book Study: Swim, Ride, Run, Breathe We will be having a book study on Wednesday nights at 7PM for three weeks start-ing on September 16th. The book we will be reading is Swim, Ride, Run, Breathe: How I Lost

a Triathlon and Caught My Breath, by Rev. Jennifer Garrison Brownell. You can pick up a copy on Amazon, the ISBN number is (978-0829820232). The church will have about 5 copies available for use, so please see Pastor Brian before buying one. A description of the book is as follows: “One winter, Jennifer Garrison Brownell, a mid-life pastor, wife of a se-riously disabled man, and dedicated non-athlete, decided almost on a whim to train for and run a sprint triathlon. In the process, she was surprised to discover that her spirit was as transformed as her body. With humor and without sentimentality, Brownell keeps breathing as she reflects on marriage and swim goggles; motherhood and bicycle repair; disabilities and running shoes.” If you can’t read everything that is fine. We will try to meet at a member’s house each Wednesday, and we will announce the locations as we get them sorted out. If you want to bring a snack, it is always appreciated. Blessings, Pastor Brian September 16th – Intro & Part 1 September 23rd – Part 2

September 30th – Part 3 & 4

Cabbage Roll Dinner (October 2nd) We will be having a Cabbage Roll Dinner this year on Friday October 2nd at 6PM in the fellowship hall. There are no costs, but we will be taking donations towards the event, and any amount above and beyond the food costs will be a church fundraiser. Please RSVP to Pastor Brian ([email protected], 937-469-1383) by Sunday September 27th if you wish to attend. Please also indicate if you are vegetarian or have any other dietary needs. We will have a vegetarian dish available. If youth or others would like to volunteer with the serving, it would be most helpful. Let Pastor Brian know if you are interested. It should be a great time as always.

Youth Event on September 25th: Game Night

Mark your calendars; we will have a youth game night at the church on the evening of Friday September 25th. We will meet at 6pm and have pizza, and play games until 9ish. Let Pastor Brian know by that afternoon if you are planning on coming so we know how much food to get. Please bring your favorite board or card game, and we will see who the grand champion of Beaver UCC truly is.

Sunday School Resuming September 13th

We will resume our Sunday school programs for both youth and adults on Sunday September 13th. Listed below are our various classes and education opportunities with some information about each one. Age ranges are given for each class, however, flexibility is assumed depending on the child.

Nursery Meets: Upstairs each Sunday during service after the children’s moment, year round. Main Teacher: Lindsey Lingenfelter Ages: Infant through Pre-K This class is for our youngest students and there will be a combination of play and some instruction depending on the ages present.

Young Learners Meets: Upstairs each Sunday during service after the children’s moment, Septem-ber through May with a one month break around Christmas Main Teacher: Sarah Hogan Ages: K through 4th grade This class is for our younger learners and will be focused on instruction and lessons. Mate-rial will be taught from a children’s story type Bible. Children less comfortable with work-ing on lessons might wish to stay in the nursery, and those who are more advanced might wish to go to the older class.

Children’s Bible Study Meets: Upstairs each Sunday during service after the children’s moment, Septem-ber through May with a one month break around Christmas Main Teacher: Patti King Ages: 4th through 8th grade This class will be a Bible and faith study where children will read scripture lessons from the Bible each week and study them. Children will also learn about Christian faith themes present in the topics and readings for the week. Readings should somewhat overlap with the readings given in the service. As children reach the point where the curriculum or dis-cussions seem less challenging then they are encouraged to stay in service, attend the Adult Bible Study, and seek confirmation with the Pastor when ready.

Adult Bible Study Meets: In the fellowship hall each Sunday at 9:30 am, September through May Main Teacher: Pastor Brian Ages: Youth and Adults This class will be a Bible study each week led by Pastor Brian. Jr. High and Sr. High youth and Adults are encouraged to attend. This year we will be reading through all four of the Gospels so that by May we will have read and discussed each chapter.

Confirmation Class Each year in September I ask if there are any youth interested in confirmation. Con-firmation is the act by which youth study their faith, and, traditionally, confirm the baptism they received as an infant, or receive adult baptism. We usually have classes that start in September and go through May. During confirmation youth are expected to remain in wor-ship, complete monthly reading assignments, and meet for a class with me each month. The age when confirmation is appropriate varies by the individual. I would suggest no earlier than 8th grade, and certainly by 10th grade youth would be more than ready. I usually say that if our older Sunday school class is becoming too easy, then it is likely time to start con-firmation. Anyone who is interested should contact me and we will try to have a class in late September. Blessings, Pastor Brian

Beaver Church Softball Beaver Church is in its third year of sponsoring a Beavercreek Youth Soft-ball Team that one of our youth participates in. This year we sponsored Anna Landing’s team for a second year in a row. This softball season was interrupted

by the rain gods. If I had to guess, I think more than 50% of all games had been cancelled due to rain and flooded fields. Rained-out games were rescheduled, only to be cancelled again or never rescheduled. Our poor players, gardeners and farmers were going stir crazy and praying for clear skies. Our team managed to play about 5 games, then was im-mediately thrown into the silver tournament game. Unfortunately, our team had one win and two losses in the tournament, but enjoyed the time they had to play and socialize to-gether. Because BUCC sponsors Anna’s team, they can pretty much stay together year after year so friendship and team camaraderie can develop. Great job BUCC Youth team! P.S. Small note to Alan Nelson- Warning! Anna is good at softball too! You are in big trou-ble with that basketball challenge. (For all of you who are scratching your heads, Alan Nel-son has challenged young, tall, athletic Anna to a basketball game. Alan is tall but unfortu-nately his age is going to get him on this one. Last I heard a definite date has not been se-lected.) Kristine Petrick

OLD NEWS FROM THE XENIA GAZETTE

September 2, 1915

The 6th annual reunion of the ex-pupils of the Old Beaver School and their friends will be held

in the grove near Beaver church, Monday, Sept. 6. Come. Conveyances will meet cars at Al-

pha.

September 8, 1915

(The article includes lengthy information about the 6th reunion, which, because of threatening

weather, was held in the basement of Beaver church. 123 people enjoyed lunch at long tables,

with about 200 being present for the after-dinner program. Mention is made of Miss Kate Sny-

der, a well-loved teacher living in Indiana, who was not present due to illness. The same of-

fices were re-elected.) Note: The basement then was half the size it is now. 123 people would

really have filled it. Can you imagine 200 people in the sanctuary for the program?

SERMON ON WISDOM

If you missed church on Sunday Aug. 16th you missed a delightful sermon about wis-dom and miracles. Pastor Brian told of some of his youthful adventures again. This story pertained to the experiment of how fast his car could go —shortly after getting his driver’s license —and ended with an unexpected greeting from a patrolman. He commented that it was a miracle that we all survived our teenage years due to lack of proper brain functioning at that age. And I must say I understand what he is talking about, because my gray hairs are quickly increasing. This summer is turning out to be a real adventure as all three of my chil-dren are teenagers. Each one is experiencing different phases: one is into driving, one is into the sport of flirting and the other is just overwhelmed with the thought of going to high school. One of my recent teeth-clenching experiences occurred as my son turned at an in-tersection, driving at 17 mph, on his way to his driving exam. I didn’t think he would pass the test but somehow he did. We made it through that event only to be surprised by the next step in the teenage driving experience--the search for a second car. I gave him the task of looking on “Craigslist” for a used car approximately 5 or 6 years old with 60,000 miles on it. I thought this would be a great way for him to get involved and take some responsibility. So I gave him a couple of days and then asked him how the search was going and was some-what surprised that he had actually looked. He said he found a 1945 Hudson for one dollar. He thought it needed a new engine. I asked him, “How are we supposed to get it home?” and his response was, “It would be a really cool car to have!” So I try to think about wisdom and miracles and how that cute creative little boy who loved construction equipment, fire trucks and Legos is growing up and will be going to college soon. He will find his way just as we all have done. And as I write this, I think about how that same Sunday I followed the kids upstairs to the nursery and watched Cora in a lovely mermaid gown carrying a handful of stuffed animals without effort up the stairs, another miracle in the making, starting the cycle. Thank God for Miracles! Kristine Petrick
