In Memoriam: Dr. Neil CaprettoThe Chamber and the Beaver County region lost a dear friend and advocate
on June 9, 2018. Dr. Neil Capretto was the Medical Director of Gateway Rehabilitation Center and a nationally recognized expert in the treatment of addiction. His passing comes at age 62 after a two-year battle with cancer. Dr. Capretto was a Beaver resident and proud Beaver Countian. He, and Gateway
Rehab, have had a long association with Chamber and our many activities supporting issues of addiction in the workplace. No one was a more brilliant,
eloquent and passionate speaker on treating the disease of addiction than Neil. He taught us much about the physical, emotional and social aspects of
addiction but most importantly he showed us through his life’s work, the importance and value of empathy and compassion toward those different than
ourselves. Our condolences go out to his wife Amy, sons Andrew and Peter, his twin sister Audrey, and his extended Gateway Rehab family and friends.

Comcast NBCUniversal Awards $130,000 In Scholarships To 120 Pennsylvania High School Seniors
PITTSBURGH, June 7, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Comcast NBCUniversal today announced that it has awarded approximately $130,000 in scholarships for the 2017-18 school year to 120 Pennsylvania students as part of its annual Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program. The
program, funded by the Comcast Foundation, is a one-time, $1,000 scholarship awarded to the best and brightest high school seniors for their community service, academic performance and
leadership skills. Since 2001, more than $28 million has been awarded to nearly 27,000 high school seniors across the country as part of the Leaders and Achievers Program.
“Our Leaders and Achievers Scholarship winners are exceptional students who are committed to academic excellence and community service,” said Christine Whitaker, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Keystone Region. “We are honored to recognize their achievements and excited to
support them as they continue their educational journeys.”
Comcast recognized the students at special events held at PNC Park in Pittsburgh on June 5 and at FNB Field in Harrisburg today. One student, Jahnea Pressley, a resident of Hummel-stown and student at Central Dauphin East Senior High School, was selected to receive an
additional $10,000 Comcast Founders Scholarship – instituted in honor of Ralph J. Roberts, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Comcast Corporation.
In total, Comcast will award $205,000 in Leaders & Achievers scholarships to 187 high school seniors across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the 2018-19 school year.
The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program provides scholarships to students who strive to achieve their full potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their
communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students. The philosophy behind the program is to give young people every opportunity to
prepare for the future and to engage them in their communities. The program also demonstrates the importance of civic involvement, and the value placed on civic involvement
by the business community.

Get comfortable being uncomfortable!
Years ago, I was training a group of salespeople and said, “if you want to be successful in sales, get comfortable being uncomfortable.” As you might expect that got some strange looks. After all, they were coming to me to become comfortable selling.
We’ve all experienced a sales call where the salesperson talked endlessly about their product and how it was bound to help us. Why? Because they were comfortable with all the product knowledge stored in their head and were eager to share it. That was safer and easier than trying to understand the prospect’s situation and challenges at a meaningful level.
To be successful, we need to know what is really bothering our prospects, especially when they struggle to define it too. If you really want to help your prospect, start by helping them uncover their real issues before you talk about your solution. It takes insightful questioning, active listening, and discipline. It won’t be as comfortable as talking about your product, but you’ll find that you and your prospect learn more about what is really going on and how to solve it. So get comfortable being uncomfortable. For more tips go to www.ExSELLyst.sandler.com.
Government Affairs ReportJune 2018Government Affairs ReportTOWN VS COUNTRY?
The Beaver County Chamber of Commerce provides advocacy and education on issues that not only impact our business community but the also the everyday lives of residents. The Government Affairs
Committees is a diverse group representing varying perspectives of our community. One of our invaluable partners in our efforts to connect with the elected and government officials is the Beaver County Regional Council of Governments.
For decades, townships and boroughs in Beaver County have belonged to statewide associations that advocate for the unique concerns of each and provide education and networking opportunities for municipal officials. Now, ALL of our municipalities hold a joint educational event to focus on items of common interest: this year on August 9th, the Beaver County Local Government Con-ference will take on both the issues we share and those that can easily divide us. Hosted by the Beaver County Regional Council of Government and titled “Town & Country”, it offers each kind of municipality opportunity to consider the unique assets we offer – to ourselves and each other.
In our County’s two small cities and 28 boroughs of all sizes, even the smallest can claim close-knit communities where residents know their neighbors – think social infrastructure – and where roads, water and sewer, as well as communications infrastructure are present and ready for new users. Population declines in recent decades have challenged our towns to maintain their health with a diminishing tax base yet represent tremendous opportunities in redevelopment and renewal. They may struggle more visibly with social issues like blight or drug activity but can be the best places for new business to locate because they already offer essential services.
Our 21 townships, on the other hand, offer the region critical green infrastructure for agriculture and recreation, plus enhance air and water quality for local towns. They boast great beauty but providing a reliable internet connection that supports strategic business development and grows the tax base without growing resident population feels out of reach. Rural communities are the breadbasket of the County – agriculture is our largest employer – and face unique challenges and opportunities in natural gas development and pressure to conserve green places when sprawl threatens. Education, public safety, transportation and access to health care all demand different solutions in the countryside than they would in a more urban or suburban context. “Town & Country” will demonstrate that Beaver County can create healthier, more interdependent communities by recognizing and mutually supporting the best each has to offer.
Your whole community – education, business, the social sector and residents – is encouraged to join local government leaders at the CCBC Dome on August 9th for an outstanding lineup of speakers. Christina Cassotis, CEO of Pittsburgh International Airport, will lead off with Building a Regional Identity and Reputation. Former US Representative Mark Critz is now Executive Director of PA Rural Development Council and will discuss urban-rural relationships. We are excited to host the Placemaking Workshop from CMU to guide an interactive panel all about identifying and building on unique community assets. To conclude, Gisele and John Fetterman, mayoral couple in Braddock PA will share their success story of urban renewal by engaging with surrounding rural neighbors. Enjoy the best our area offers at our mini-Farmer’s Market and meet your neighbors in the Coffee Lounge – sourced with Beaver County product! To register, visit the BCRCOG website at www.bcr-cog.com. Chamber members are also invited to the annual Legislative Reception the evening before, Wednesday August 8, to meet our state representatives and senators for conversation. Register at www.beavercountychamber.com.

Member Special Recognition Section: Congratulations to owners Mark and Cynthia Peterson and all the great folks at WBVP/WMBA Radio on celebrating 70 years of historic radio broadcasting. The station first went on the air in 1948 and has been a staple of the Beaver County landscape ever since. A “Who’s Who” of former and current radio personalities, elected officials and other community leaders helped celebrate
the event in the Broadhead Hotel ballroom on May 25th.
Special thanks to everyone who contributed to the United Way of Beaver County as they surpassed their fundraising goal this year by raising a total of $900,628. While he is always quick to deflect the credit, our appreciation for the excellent job that Executive Director Mike Rubino, and is very talented and dedicated staff of Stella,
Nancy and Lois, deserves special mention. They do an incredible job on behalf of the 60 or so organizations that benefit from your contributions. We also thank the 17 core United Way of Beaver County agencies for the remarkable effort and work they do
to serve those less fortunate than ourselves. Go to www.unitedwaybeaver.org to learn more.
Fifty years is a long time to be in business, let alone running a restaurant, but that’s exactly what Alex Sebastian has done at the Wooden Angel. The Wooden Angel is not just any old restaurant in Beaver County. It is world renowned for its international and domestic wine list, and one the finest dining experiences you will find in the Pittsburgh region. We also greatly appreciate
their service and contributions to the community and the many charities and organizations they support, including the Chamber. Congratulations on 50 years of hard work and excellence in
Beaver County to Alex, his family and staff at the Wooden Angel.
