Beck Orchestra Testing and Auditions

Auditions/testing will provide end of the year test grades for the 6th six-weeks grading period (there will

be three grades,) and placement for orchestra classes for the 2015-16 school year.

Beginning May 11, All 6th and 7th grade students currently enrolled in orchestra will take part

in auditions afterschool. Each student will have an assigned time. Any 8th graders not

auditioning for high school will be graded on JH music during class.

Beginning April 27.. 8th graders auditioning for high school will perform for me as a

completion grade during their class time. The formal audition will be scheduled by the high

school directors on May 2.

Orchestra Classes for 2015-2016:

Chamber Orchestra, Varsity - mostly 8th graders, some 7th graders

Symphony Orchestra, Junior Varsity - even mix of 7th and 8th grade, with very few 6th

Philharmonic Orchestra, mostly 7th graders, some 8th and some 6th

First Year Orchestra, beginning or minimal knowledge/skill on instrument

Auditions will be based on the following

Attitude and progress throughout the school year

Tone quality and approach to the instrument throughout the school year

Selected Scales Performance* in video recorded audition

Selected Excerpts Performance* in live audition

Sight-reading Performance* in live audition

About the material, Students will bring the completed information sheet to their audition. Sÿudents should choose

the path most appropriate for their level of skill and level of interest in orchestra. There are two paths to choose,

though selection does not guarantee placement in that particular orchestra. There is always a rightplace foryour

child in orchestrÿ

Chamber includes all the material for Symphony and Philharmonic auditions PLUS additional scales and

€ ÿ ,excerpts fromÿ Aaron Copland's Hoe Down from Rodeo and Gustav Holst s - St Paul s Suite, W. Dargason.

Symphony / Philharmonic includes scales PLUS excerpts from Percy Fletcher's Folk Tune and Fiddle

Dance and the Traditional American Folk Song Shenandoah.
