Tim DeMello of Ziggs

When DeMello was asked if he does an Internet search for online profiles when he chooses whom to hire, he replies, "Of course. Everybody does."

DeMello estimates that about 20 percent of companies are secretly scanning online profiles before they interview applicants. What they often find is shocking — including profiles that detail drug use, orgies and illegal behavior

Page 8: Become The Obvious Hire All material contained within this PowerPoint Presentation and accompanying audio recording of the live presentation are protected

Tim DeMello observes...

"I think some of these sites out there are going to be the most expensive free Web sites to their careers that they've ever

seen"

Employers are looking. What about Colleges & Universities?

Increasingly, college recruiters and employers review the Internet, primarily applicants’ social networking sites and blogs, as part of a background check on prospective students and employees. An Internet search or search of social networking sites enables access to potentially damaging online postings that may jeopardize your entry into colleges, internships, and professional positions. Those who present themselves as partiers, substance users, sexually promiscuous, anti-authority or volatile can be flagged and denied entrance to colleges and places of employment.

So what’s the best course of action? Use your online profile to your advantage!

According to “Who's Watching” -

Treat it like a free place to promote yourself personally and professionally while staying connected with both nearby and far-flung friends, relatives, colleagues, and acquaintances. When applying to schools or conducting a job search, this is particularly true.

How to Turn the Social Media to Your Advantage

* If you mentioned on your resume that you volunteer in your community, can speak another language, or travel for work or pleasure—then “round out” your claim by backing it up online.

* Share photos of your recent trip, or of you doing community service work.

* Similarly, if you have expertise in a certain subject area, create an online “portfolio” of sorts: post links to items you’ve written or developed or artwork you’ve created. This way, if they search for you online and find you—and again, statistics show that increasingly that’s exactly what’s happening—what they discover will actually bolster your application!

According to the CareerBuilder.com Survey...

"Hiring managers are using the Internet to get a more well-rounded view of job candidates in terms of their skills, accomplishments and overall fit within the company," said Rosemary Haefner, Vice President of Human Resources at CareerBuilder.com. "As a result, more job seekers are taking action to make their social networking profiles employer-friendly. Sixteen percent of workers who have social networking pages said they modified the content on their profile to convey a more professional image to potential employers."

Page 19: Become The Obvious Hire All material contained within this PowerPoint Presentation and accompanying audio recording of the live presentation are protected

Haefner recommends the following tips to keep your online persona in

a favorable light: 1) Clean up digital dirt. Make sure to remove pictures, content and links that can send the wrong message to a potential employer before you start your job search.

2) Update your profile regularly. Make sure to include specific accomplishments, inside and outside of work.

3) Monitor comments. Since you can’t control what other people say on your site, you may want to use the "block comments" feature.

4) Join groups selectively. While joining a group with a fun or silly name may seem harmless, "Party Monsters R Us" may not give the best impression to a hiring manager. Also be selective about who you accept as "friends."

5) Go private. Consider setting your profile to "private," so only designated friends can view it.
