Each session shows how difficult it will be - low, moderate or strenous. Additionally, if the session will be indoors or outdoors.

Friday, 3rd - Heritage Hill Loop Tour & Birds, Bees and Brews ReceptionHeritage Hill Loop Tour: Attendees will take a drive through Heritage Hill National Historic District, named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Heritage Hill lines the northern sector of downtown with nearly 160 structures reflecting many architectural periods and styles. The district includes a breath taking view of the Mississippi River from Mosquito Park and Snake Alley. Perhaps Burlington’s most famous landmark, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! dubbed Snake Alley “Unbelievable Crooked” and #1 on the Odd Spots Across America campaign.

Birds, Bees and Brews Reception - Sponsored by Aldo Leopold Pheasants Forever Chapter & Parkside Brewing: Attendees will learn about the connection between Iowa’s wild pheasant population and the bees and why developing high-quality pollinator habitat is so important to many organizations and businesses. Attendees will also learn about pollinators role in the art of brewing as many historians agree honey was the sugar source for the earliest fermented beverages. Parkside Brewing not only creates beers made with honey thanks to pollinators, but also uses the spent grains from the beer manufacturing process to offer a unique food experience not readily found in the Burlington area today.

BIRD WATCHING

Low - Indoor/OutdoorBecome an adept birder by learning bird-spotting techniques, bird call identification, and the habits and habitats of these winged creatures. Put your skills to work as you hike around Starr’s Cave Park and Preserve. Learn about other critters and “reading” nature signs along the way.

BOATER EDUCATION 1

Low - IndoorThis classroom session will teach participants about boats, how to navigate your boat, Iowa laws, safety equipment, and emergency preparedness. Whether you choose to go fishing, sailing, pleasure boating, canoeing, or kayaking, taking a boater education course could save your life! Completion of Boater Education Part 1 and 2 along with passing a written test will result in earning your Iowa Boater Education Certificate.

BOATER EDUCATION 2

Low - OutdoorParticipants are familiarized with safety equipment and procedures to make their next trip to the water both safe and fun. They learn to back a trailer, start a motor, tie basic knots for boating and run a power boat (weather permitting). Completion of the Boater Education Part 1 and 2 with passing a written test will result in earning your Iowa Boater Education Certificate.

CANNING & PRESERVING

Low - IndoorHave you always wanted to learn how to can food, but didn’t know where to start? Come ready to learn about general canning and preserving. You will learn how to get started, what equipment is needed, what vegetables & meats can be preserved and the various methods of canning-water bath, steam & pressure canning. Bring an appetite & be ready to make and try delicious items from the garden & field.

CITY NATURE ID

Low - OutdoorEver wondered what the bird was that flew through your backyard? Can you name the trees or wildflowers in your local park? Ever wonder what critters live in the city? Come take a walk and explore nature in the City of Burlington. You never know what you’ll find in the city, so bring your binoculars and your walking shoes as we travel the sidewalks around us.

Low - OutdoorThe versitility of a Dutch oven will amaze you. See how easy it is to prepare crowd-pleasing meals around the campfire. This session will cover how to choose your cookware, prepare your kitchen and how to cook with the Dutch oven and coals. Recipes will be shared and everyone will get a chance to help prepare and cook, while sampling a variety of dishes... even desserts.

BACKPACKING & HIKING

Moderate - Indoor/OutdoorTake the mystery out of backpacking in Iowa and the Midwest with an overview of planning, preparation and gear. Along with local information, learn how to choose a pack, select proper clothing and footwear. Plus, we’ll give you important notes on trail etiquette and Leave No Trace principals. Wear comfortable clothing and boots or tennis shoes that can get muddy as we explore Starr’s Cave Park and Preserve.

Class Descriptions

Low - Indoor/OutdoorDiscover the rhythms and techniques of fly fishing. Learn about equipment, casting, shooting the line, and fly types and presentations in this land based class. Then head inside and learn some basic fly tying skills. Fly types and their uses will be discussed and demonstrated, including nymphs, dry flies, wet flies and streamers. Participants will get to “try their hand” at tying flies, which they will be able to take home with them.

Low - Indoor/OutdoorThere is an entire grocery store of delicious, local, wild foods just waiting outside your backdoor! This hands-on class focuses on how to identify key features of wild edible plants, knowing when and what to sustainably harvest and how to prepare wild foods. Flowers, greens, roots and shoots are just a few of the things that will be one the menu! Come ready to help dig, cut, cook and most importantly – eat!

Low to Moderate - IndoorThis session gives participants a comprehensive overview of the sport of archery. It is intended for students who have no archery experience to start building a good foundation for shooting. You will be taught how to safely use basic archery equipment and the “Eleven Steps to Archery Success.” This is a fun, hands-on experience with all equipment provided.

Low - Indoor OutdoorFishing is a great way for families to spend time together outdoors! Get an introduction to fishing equipment, fish identification, and fish habitats. Then head outside to practice casting techniques, before heading to the banks of Big Hollow Lake to see how the fish are biting. Bring clothing for both indoors and outdoors - rain or shine. An Iowa fishing license is required for

this session.

Low - Indoor/OutdoorLearn more about guns and safe firearms handling in this hands-on class. Participants will become comfortable around firearms in a information-packed, upbeat session. The session will introduce different types of firearms, how to load and unload various firearms, ammunition types, definitions of commonly used terms and the four basic rules of firearm safety. We will spend time in the classroom and on the range shooting, so please dress accordingly. All firearms will be provided.

Low - Indoor/OutdoorDo you enjoy collecting items when out in nature? Find yourself on Pinterest trying to be inspired? This session will turn natural materials into treasures you can take home. Let your creative mind recharge during our time together.

Moderate to Strenuous - OutdoorAlways wanted to go kayak fishing, but didn’t know where to start? Join us! We’ll refresh basic safety and parts of the kayak before introducing fishing. All equipment for this session will be supplied for you. An Iowa fishing license is required for

this session.

LANDSCAPING FOR WILDLIFE

Low - IndoorHave you ever left your phone in the vehicle and just went for a walk to forget your troubles? Habitat and wildlife bring joy and relaxation to Iowans in a number of ways: bird watching, hunting, fishing, hiking, wildlife-viewing and so many more. Our wildlife comes in all shapes and sizes and so do their habitats! This session will cover the basic needs of Iowa’s wildlife and how you can provide these in your backyard or on your property.

Low - OutdoorRifles, muzzleloaders and shotguns will be the focus of this session. Learn how to safely handle, load and shoot these firearms. Learn marksmanshp, shooting techniques and proper storage. All firearms and safety equipment will be provided. Must attend Intro to Firearms or have

completed hunter education.

KAYAK FISHING

Low - Indoor/OutdoorWe will aspire to take wonderfully, composed, in-focus images, including beautiful macro images (close-ups of flowers, small critters, etc.) by the end of the class. Participants should bring a digital point-andshoot or digital SLR camera and the user manual. We will go outside and practice our new skills, as well as discuss some of the “technical” aspects of photography.

Moderate to Strenuous - OutdoorLearn the basics of water safety, equipment, how to enter and exit the kayak, paddle strokes and other maneuvers. Participants will practice kayaking skills on the lake, so dress for the weather! Snow hats and gloves have been worn in the past. Kayaks and life jackets will be provided.

PISTOL BASICS

Low - OutdoorJoin us on the range to learn about different types of handguns, their uses and other equipment needs. Additionally, we’ll discuss safe handling, use and storage of handguns. We’ll spend most of the session outside on the range, so please dress accordingly. We will be shooting .22 caliber pistols and 9 mm pistols. Firearms and ammunition will be provided.Must attend Intro to Firearms or have

completed hunter education.

Moderate - Indoor/OutdoorCut out the grocery store and harvest your family a wild turkey! This session will introduce new hunters to the basics of turkey hunting and preparing them for the table. Topics covered will include turkey habitat, hunting techniques & equipment, turkey calling, and field dressing. Participants will try a few samples of cooked turkey and learn the culinary approaches to this favored bird. Participants will pattern their shotgun for Sunday’s hunt. This is a prerequisite for the mentored

turkey hunt.

TALKING TURKEY HUNT

Moderate to Strenuous - Outdoor Join us on a mentored turkey hunt! We’ll meet our mentors Saturday evening and then head out to the timber first thing Sunday morning. This session will start early and may run late, depending on the hunt. Firearms and ammunition will be provided.Make sure to dress in layers, with the top layer camo or dark colors.

Must attend Talking Turkey Intro and have completed hunter education. A

valid Iowa hunting and habitat license and season 4 turkey tag required.

Low - Indoor/OutdoorIowa’s wild game and fish are some of the healthiest and most nutritious meat for the table. Learn to make the most of your harvest with proper preparation and tasty recipes. Bring a hungry appetite and a willingness to try cleaning game and fish yourself!

Low - OutdoorStart your next adventure. See remote areas, camp along the way. The journey is part of the adventure. Learn how to car camp or overland like a pro. Participants will learn about campsite selection, fire safety, outdoor cooking techniques, and packing your vehicle for such a trip.

Low - IndoorsAssisting wildlife with food and shelter is important. Learn about types of bird houses and nest boxes to make available in your backyard. WILDERNESS SURVIVAL

Moderate - Indoor/OutdoorBe prepared . . . expect the unexpected. Nearly all outdoor activities have an element of risk, but with a little knowledge and preparation, a favorite activity can be worry-free. Learn what to plan and prepare for, survival skills and fire building.

The goal of the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) scholarship program is to broaden participation in the 2019 weekend workshop to women 18 years old and older who would be unable to attend without financial assistance. BOW encourages anyone to apply for a scholarship. However, preference will be given to first-time attendees and those promoting diversity in outdoors education across the state through their community affiliations, culture, region, and/or profession.

• Friends of BOW will sponsor a Silent Auction on Saturday (details next page). We’re asking each participant to bring something to donate to the auction. All proceeds will go to support the BOW program. Please pay with cash, check or credit card for any purchases.

NECESSITIES

• SHOES: Sturdy shoes are important.

• WEATHER APPROPRIATE: Rain gear and cold-weather clothing are necessities, as classes will be held regardless of weather. This is Iowa and it’s hard to predict what we will have for temperatures.

• FREE TIME ITEMS: You will have free time to relax and explore the PZAZZ! Resort property and its amenities:

– There is an indoor pool and hot tub, so you may want to bring a swimsuit.

• SKINCARE: Sunscreen and bug spray – it’s that time of year.

• AN OPEN MIND: Bring a creative spirit and a willingness to learn and try new things. It will be an awesome weekend!

At each of our workshops, Friends of BOW holds a silent (and sometimes not-so-silent) auction to help us cover workshop costs and attendance scholarships. It’s a lot of fun and we get to send participants home with some wonderful things. We are asking each participant to donate something to the auction. It doesn’t have to be anything big – but we won’t complain if it is! It doesn’t even have to be anything new. Just bring something, if you can.

NEW OR USED: as long as it is in good condition. For example, if you have a piece of outdoor equipmentyou’re no longer planning to use — bring it!

Bowfishing Weekend

TBD Summer 2019

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced archer, this is a unique opportunity to learn about bowfishing. Come wade with us as we pursue the many different fish species and their various habitats. Learn about the different types of bowfishing gear, while expanding your skills beyond the basics of target bow shooting. Weather dependent, participants will have the opportunity to bowfish on a floating platform, under the lights, at night.

Backpacking Trip, Pingora Outdoors

June 20-23, 2019 - Backpack Superior Hiking Trail July 21-22, 2019 - Backpack Yellow River State ParkJuly 27-28, 2019 - Canoe Camping Des Moines River October 25-27, 2019 - Backpack Ozark Highlands Trail

Partnering with Pingora Outdoors in Ankeny to offer three backpacking trips and one canoe and camping trip this year. All trips provide transportation, meals, group gear and logicstics. Participants will be required to provide their own gear and packing lists will be provided, along with medical and libaility forms, upon registration. Registration will open in February 2019.

Beyond BOW at the Range, Olofson Shooting Range, Polk City, IA July 13, 2019, Beyond BOW - Trap and Skeet July 27, 2019, Beyond BOW - Rifles and Handguns

Ever wanted to try a pistol, rifle, or shotgun? Join us for a day at the range. The days will focus on teaching basic rifle, shotgun and pistol safety, shooting techniques and range etiquette. All firearms and ammunition will be provided. Once the shooting is done, the instructors will teach you how take apart, clean and store the firearms.

Overland Camping, Nomad Overlanding

Join Nomad Overlanding on this family friendly workshop to learn the ins and outs of overland camping. The workshop teaches camp cooking, packing for short and long trips, fire buildling and safety, cmaping games, camping equipment and gear, and selecting camping destinations. This active workshop will fill your belly, so come hungry to eat and learn.

Women’s Upland Bird Hunting Clinic, Pheasants Forever

This clinic will begin on Saturday with four sessions led by some of Iowa’s most passionate female bird hunters. The sessions will provide instruction on everything from bird habitat, places to hunt, necessary gear, firearms, hunting methods, selecting and training bird dogs, and so much more. On Sunday, we’ll finish with breakfast followed by a morning bird hunt! Once the hunt is over, the instructors will assist you with field dressing and share some of their favorite recipes and uses of the harvest.
