Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy . . . . By tradition on the Third Sunday of Advent the pink candle is lit. This speaks of JOY with the news about Messiah. Joy is not happiness. It is deeper, not subject to the winds of change and the shift in circumstances. It is the settled conviction of life and heart that rises from certainty that all I need for my life is assured to me. My horizon is bright with certain promise and the deepest longings of my heart are satisfied. It does not mean that we must ignore the brokenness of the present world or pre-tend that the world and the devil do not exist. It means we are certain of the outcome and that the Savior of the world has conquered sin and death. For all who have put trust in him we can never be separated from his grave and eternal favor. Today in worship allow your faith to be informed, to grow and to blossom into great joy that Christ is born for you.

Bill Douglas , Pastor

WELCOME VISITORS We are glad to have you as our guest!

As we seek to bring glory to our Father together, we welcome you to join any or all of the events and ministry activities at St. Andrews.

We invite you to worship God with us, to find us as a place for encouragement and fellowship, and to become a part of this church. We invite you to tell us who you are and let us get to know you, as you get to know and become more familiar with us.

The back of the program has the office phone number and email addresses for the staff. God has moved you to come to worship him.

We are honored that you are here.

December 17, 2017 Preaching: Bill Douglas

Leading Worship: Mike Stewart Songs of Ascent

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

O come, O come, Immanuel, and ransom captive Israel

That mourns in lonely exile here, until the Son of God appear.

Refrain:

Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel

Shall come to you, O Israel.

O come, O come, thou Lord of might, who to thy tribes on Sinai's height

In ancient times didst give the law in cloud and majesty and awe. Refrain

O come, O Rod of Jesse, free, thine own from Satan’s tyranny;

From depths of hell thy people save, and give them victory o'er the grave. Refrain

O come, thou Day-spring from on high, and cheer us by thy drawing nigh;

Disperse they gloomy clouds of night, and deaths dark shadows put to flight. Refrain

O come, thou Key of David, come and open wide our heav’nly home;

Make safe the way that leads on high, and close the path to misery. Refrain

O Holy Night

O, holy night, the stars are brightly shining, it is the night of our dear Savior’s birth!

Long lay the world in sin and error pining, till He appeared, and the soul felt its worth.

A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!

Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!

O, night divine, O, night when Christ was born!

Humbly, He lay—Creator, come as creature, born on the floor of a hay-scattered stall.

True Son of God, yet bearing human feature, he entered earth to reverse Adam’s fall.

In towering grace, He laid aside His glory and in our place, was sacrificed for sin.

Fall on your knees! O, hear the Gospel story!

O night, divine, O night when Christ was born!

Come then to Him who lies within a manger, with joyful shepherd, proclaim Him as Lord.

Let not the Promised Son remain a stranger; in reverent worship, make Christ your Adored.

Eternal life is theirs who would receive Him; with grace and peace, their lives He will adorn.

Fall on your knees! Receive the gift of Heaven!

O night, divine, O night when Christ was born!

O night, O holy night when Christ was born!

You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace;

The mountains and hills will burst into song before you,

And all the trees of the field will clap their hands.

Instead of the thorn bush will grow the pine tree,

And instead of briers the myrtle will grow.

This will be for the LORD's renown, for an everlasting sign,

Which will not be destroyed."

Call to Worship The Lord be with you

And also with you.

The Church’s One Foundation

The Church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord,

She is His new creation by water and the Word.

From heaven He came and sought her to be His holy bride;

With His own blood He bought her, and for her life He died.

Elect from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth;

Her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth;

One holy Name she blesses, partakes one holy food,

And to one hope she presses, with every grace endued.

Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war,

She waits the consummation of peace forevermore;

'Til, with the vision glorious, her longing eyes are blessed,

And the great Church victorious shall be the Church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One,

And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won.

O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we

Like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with Thee.

Hymn #218 Angels, From The Realms of Glory

Angels, from the realms of glory, wing your flight o’er all the earth;

Ye who sang creation’s story, now proclaim Messiah’s birth:

Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King.

Shepherds in the fields abiding, watching o’er your flocks by night,

God with man is now residing, yonder shines the infant light.

Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King.

Sages leave your contemplations, brighter visions beam afar;

Seek the great Desire of nations; ye have seen his natal star:

Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King.

Saints before the altar bending, watching long in hope and fear,

Suddenly the Lord, descending, in his temple shall appear:

Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King.

All creation, join in praising God the Father, Spirit, Son;

Evermore your voices raising to th’ eternal Three in One:

Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King.

Confession of Faith – Westminster Larger Catechism

Q 41: Why was our Mediator called Jesus?

Our Mediator was called Jesus, because he saveth his people from their sins.

Q 42: Why was our Mediator called Christ?

Our Mediator was called Christ, because he was anointed with the Holy Ghost above

measure, and so set apart, and fully furnished with all authority and ability, to execute the

offices of prophet, priest, and king of his church, in the estate both of his humiliation and

exaltation.

Q 43: What offices doth Christ execute as our Redeemer?

A. Christ, as our Redeemer, executeth the offices of a prophet, of a priest, and of a king,

both in his estate of humiliation and exaltation.

Hymn #214 Angels, We Have Heard On High

Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o’er the plains,

And the mountains in reply echo back their joyous strains.

Gloria in excelsis Deo,

Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong?

Say what may the tidings be, which inspire your heav’nly song?

Gloria in excelsis Deo,

Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Come to Bethlehem and see him whose birth the angels sing;

Come, adore on bended knee Christ the Lord, the newborn King.

Gloria in excelsis Deo,

Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Scripture Lesson Ephesians 1:11-14

The First Noel

Women: The first Noel the angels did say

Was to certain poor shepherds in fields where they lay;

Men: In fields where they lay keeping their sheep,

On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

All: Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel!

Men: They lookéd up and saw a star,

Shining in the east beyond them far;

Women: And to the earth it gave great light,

And so it continued both day and night.

All: Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel!

All: Then let us all with one accord

Sing praises to our heavenly Lord

That hath made heav’n and earth of nought,

And with His blood mankind hath bought:

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel!

11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to

the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we

who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.13 In him you also,

when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were

sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we

acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

Sermon

Benediction

Nunc Dimittis

Hymn # 203 Hark! the Herald Angels Sing

Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!"

Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled

Joyful, all ye nations, rise, Join the triumph of the skies;

With th' angelic host proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem."

Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!"

Christ, by highest heav'n adored: Christ, the everlasting Lord;

Late in time behold him come, Offspring of the favored one.

Veil'd in flesh, the Godhead see; Hail, th'incarnate Deity:

Pleased, as man, with men to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel!

Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!"

Hymn # 203 Hark! the Herald Angels Sing

Hail! the heav'n born Prince of peace! Hail! the Son of Righteousness!

Light and life to all he brings, Risen with healing in his wings

Mild he lays his glory by, Born that man no more may die:

Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth.

Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!"

Ephesians 1:11-14

“Lord command what you will – but give what you command.” Augustine of Hippo A.D. 400

The exacting commands in Eph 4-6 are rooted in the necessity of the provisions in Eph 1-3.

In order to put away our old practices we need a resource greater than our fears and our

anger.

We can speak truth in love because there is no need to maintain our own defenses.

We can practice submission to one another because we have God.

We can die to our self-demands today because God has given us eternal life

An inheritance that is guaranteed. What my soul needs the most is sure and imperishable.

Past tense and predestined according the purposes of God.

Sealed by the Spirit as down payment.

An inheritance that comes through believing the truth of the gospel of salvation.

The story of the gospel.

The promises of the gospel.

An inheritance that is not just the benefits of Christ but Christ himself.

The Purpose of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church:

We exist to glorify and enjoy God as His called-out people:

Who are called together to worship God,

To be instructed in the Scriptures,

To be conformed to God’s truth,

To reach out into our world with the news of the gospel.
