Principal’s Message

Greetings everyone,

As we head towards the end of the year our thoughts turn to organisation for 2019. Each year a small number of families make requests in relation to student placement the following year. Teachers work hard to get the best mix of students in each class and this small number of requests usually can be considered in the makeup of classes. The nature requests we consider are issues such as family composition, social issues between students a history of bullying and supporting students who suffer from anxiety or have special needs. The school is unable to make decisions on class placement based on parents’ preference of teachers or putting best friends in the same class. If there is a reason based on student wellbeing and learning that parents wish to be considered, please email me via the school email. As circumstances change from year to year, please don’t assume that because you contacted the school in previous years that this information will continue to be considered in the future.

The school disco was a wonderful success last Friday. Thanks to Shelley Sneath for her organisation and thanks to the teachers and parents who helped out on the night. The P&C raised over $2000. This money will go towards additional playground shade options for students. Apologies for not communicating the P&C’s child protection strategies of not having dozens of parents in the hall. The new procedures, adopted last year, were as a result of community concerns that there was no way of ensuring the large numbers of adults in the hall were meant to be there. Also, the crowded hall was limiting the dancing options for students. At the P&C meeting next week, an alternate strategy that keeps students safe, limits adult access but allows parents to see their children, will be discussed.

Fingers crossed that the forecast showers don’t disrupt our Performing Arts Evening planned for this Thursday.

Afternoon Pick up Time We have had several parents phoning at afternoon bell time to let us know that they are running late. It is important for parents to arrive on time to collect their child in the afternoon or make alternative arrangements for after school care. The bell rings at 2.55pm and once the children are released from class it is really difficult to find them. For the safety and wellbeing of students we ask that you are on time to collect your child. P&C Meeting ~ Wednesday 21 November AT next week’s meeting the P&C will be considering community feedback which will shape the nature of the P&C into the future. If you would like to be a part of this discussion, please come along at 7pm. Aboriginal Learning Circle Our local community of schools Aboriginal Learning Circle is meeting to discuss plans for Aboriginal Education for 2019. We are meeting at Belair and it would be lovely to have some of our Aboriginal families represented. Kotara School Community Combined P&C Meeting This group is an initiative started by the principal of Kotara High School. The purpose of the group is to share ideas and explore the K-12 learning pathways for our students. Please let Mr Beard know if you are attending this meeting on Wednesday evening, 28 November, 6pm at Kotara High.

Deputy Principal’s Message Congratulations to 1T who were noticed at the K-2 assembly yesterday for their beautiful manners, listening and sitting so well. 5K and 5G were the class of the week for 3-6 last week. Congratulations to both of these classes. Thank you to the P&C, parent volunteers and teachers who gave up their Friday night to supervise the disco. Some of our students were recognised by the parents helping in the canteen for their beautiful manners. Well done to Chris E, Charlotte F, Charlie M, Michael R, Thomas M and Chloe E. Belair Language of Resilience The focus for this week is the element of Control.

Anti-Bullying: Be an Upstander! Refuse to be a bystander! If you see friends or classmates laughing along with the bully, tell them that they are contributing to the problem. Let them know that by laughing they are also bullying. Have a wonderful week!

Environment News

Plastic Police Very exciting news that was featured in the Newcastle Herald last week:

Plastic Police is able to continue to divert soft plastics from landfill and keep it out of the environment thanks to our amazing program participants and partners.

Recently, Scentre Group purchased 179 wheel stops made from recycled soft plastics collected by local public school Belair. The wheel stops were recently installed at the newly renovated Westfield Kotara shopping centre, so make sure you check it out on your next visit!

The University of Newcastle, Australia is also a participant of the Plastic Police program, and recently purchased Replas - Recycled Plastic Products outdoor furniture made from recycled soft plastics to offset soft plastics generated on Callaghan campus through the program.

Other organisations participating in the Plastic Police program include Singleton Council, Dungog Shire Council, Hunter Water, Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group, Quarry Mining & Construction Equipment Pty Ltd, Biddabah Public School, Belair Public School, Holy Family Primary School, Pride Dry Cleaning & Laundry, City of Newcastle and Quest Newcastle.

We have ordered our plastic benches and they are currently being made. Scentre group (Westfield) have kindly paid for them and we look forward to seeing them in the school grounds.

Continue the hard work and send in your soft plastics from home! Children are doing a fantastic job at recess and lunch of shaking out their plastics before placing them into the red buckets ready for recycling.

SCHOOL STUDENT TRANSPORT SCHEME 2019

School student applications for 2019 open from

Monday, 15 October 2018.

Students progressing to Year 3 and Year 7 do not need to

re-apply if they:

• are continuing at the same school • are residing at the same address • have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.

Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update

their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to

expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https:// apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2018 to ensure student

entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2018, the system will automatically cancel a

card and a new one will need to be issued.

Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal

address. Cards will be mailed out during December 2018 and January 2019.

Dear Belair staff and community,

Plastic Police® was in the Newcastle Herald last week! We spoke to the Herald about the need for

society to reduce the amount of soft plastic it uses and the importance of transitioning to a circular

economy, moving away from a ‘make, take, dispose’ linear economy. You can read the article here. We

would love to hear how your organisation has reduced its use of soft plastics since implementing the

Plastic Police® program!

This week is National Recycling Week (from 12-18 November). National Recycling Week is a great

opportunity to brush up on recycling knowledge as well as find opportunities to reduce your waste so

that less ends up in landfill. Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week website provides great tips on how

you can get involved at work, at home, at school and in the community. Take the War on Waste

‘Recycling or Rubbish?’ quiz to test your recycling knowledge!

Important reminders and information for your staff and community:

• Did you know that the most common recycling mistake made by Australians is placing soft

plastics into the kerbside recycling bin? Soft plastics clog sorting machines and can lead to more

waste sent to landfill. We are proud that our participants know the correct way to recycle soft

plastics!

• It is important that only dry and clean soft plastics are collected to reduce the occurrence of

smells, pests and mould and ensure we are able to recycle the plastic into new and useful

products for the community.

• Plastic Police® cannot accept degradable, biodegradable or compostable plastics as these

plastics are designed to break up into smaller pieces, and therefore are not suitable for

recycling into new products.
