September 2016 Believing, Belonging, Becoming and Branching Out Dear Friends, It has been exciting to try to get back in the swing after the generous sabbatical leave you so graciously extended. I can't thank you enough for this and for the way you and our good friend Rob Evans carried out the good work of this congregation in God's name while I was gone. When Rob agreed to that role here I was confident in the outcome. Now I have to pay his green fees in appreciation! Travel, restoration and church business, with not quite enough golf thrown in were the themes of my time. Felicia and I started with a cruise, even visiting Colleen Murphy's favorite restaurant in Grenada. We were home for a full week of excitement surrounding Sarah's graduation from Wake Forest. You may see her around this academic year while she works at the University as part of the Presidential Fellowship she received at graduation. We traveled over to Nashville as total tourists though I told Katie Morris that I was inspecting Vanderbilt Divinity School to see if it was good enough for her - and it passed and she will too! I was able to read several books on pastoral ministry and church life. I did some spiritual retreat days at Laurel Ridge Conference Center in the mountains, and worshipped at a number of different churches - from sanctuaries where there was so much incense my eyes burned, to venues where the music was so loud foam ear plugs were distributed at the doors! I went to some Presbyterian churches too. Finally I spent time reading hundreds and hundreds of pages of information in preparation for the 222nd General Assembly of the PC(USA) in Portland. Salem Presbytery elected me a commissioner for the first time. I have already reported to you about that experience but I will share that the sabbatical allowed me to go a little early and see Seattle and play at Chambers Bay, and stay a little late and play at Bandon Dunes. Two days after my return I was back at CPC. It was a wonderful and blessed time, and I thank you. Yours, Bill

Believing, Belonging, Becoming and Branching Out

Dear Friends, It has been exciting to try to get back in the swing after the generous sabbatical leave you so graciously extended.

Yours, Bill

A Note from Patrick McElwaine

Thank you. The Holy Spirit has blessed you - yes you! - with a multitude of spiritual gifts. Thank you for the ways that you share them with this community, building up the body of Christ and glorifying God's name with your entire life.

What are your gifts? Take five minutes to write them on a piece of paper. Teaching, praying, leading, supporting others, cooking, organizing, showing hospitality, being an example of Christian faith - there are more gifts than I can count!

What are your gifts and how is God calling you to share them? May we continue to serve each other and the community as disciples, continually looking for fresh ways to share that which God has given us.

1 Cor. 12:4-11 (Common English Bible) 4 There are different spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; 5 and there are different ministries and the same Lord; 6 and there are different activities but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. 7 A demonstra-tion of the Spirit is given to each person for the common good. 8 A word of wisdom is given by the Spirit to one person, a word of knowledge to another according to the same Spirit, 9 faith to still another by the same Spirit, gifts of healing to another in the one Spirit, 10 performance of miracles to another, prophecy to anoth-er, the ability to tell spirits apart to another, different kinds of tongues to another, and the interpretation of the tongues to another. 11 All these things are produced by the one and same Spirit who gives what He wants to each person.

Stewardship Committee As Jesus and the Apostles traveled in my imagination, I think they became friends. Walking along talking, joking, bickering, like anyone else. They may have had their wives, possibly children and maybe a few dogs. They were a community. At least in my mind they did. We all have friends. Hopefully you have some here at church.

Clemmons Presbyterian creates a platform for creating friendships, fun, laughter and camaraderie; this is all a part of what Clemmons Presbyterian offers. Some times we have to say goodbye to our friends and that seems unbearable. But still this church as a centerpiece allows for healthy lifestyles, a place for friendships, a place where we are not alone. Just like the community that traveled with Jesus.

As people we need places like this; a place where children can play and do family activities, where young people can meet, where young families can compare notes. Where one can find their center.

In a few months I am going to be asking you to make a financial pledge for the work of the church in 2017. Your pledging helps to keep this community going. Please begin to think on this. We need everyone to help. We are all a part of this community.

Bruce Sanspree, Stewardship Moderator

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY– SAVE THE DATE

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10

Habitat for Humanity brings together community partners and volunteers from all backgrounds, races and faiths to help qualified families construct and purchase well-built, affordable homes. Habitat’s ministry is based on the belief that to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, we must love and care for one another.

On October 22nd, Clemmons Presbyterian Church will partner with Habitat for Humanity to assist on a home construction project in Winston-Salem. If you are willing to share a few hours of your weekend, come join oth-er dedicated volunteers for a day of fun, socializing, and yes…even hard work. No specific job skills are required, simply a willingness to serve.

(Any volunteer 16 years of age or older may volunteer. 16 and 17 year olds may participate in a limited ca-pacity.)
