Illegal Guatemalans caught panning for gold inside the Chiquibul forest

Reid

Alms for the Greedy

It is Barrow’s will that will be done. The Prime Minister has gotten to a point where he believes that he can do whatever he

wants to and damn who wants to. This is dangerous and it is sewing the seed of discontent and serious civil disobe-dience.

By G. Michael Reid“Give a man a fish and he

eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.” The meaning of the proverb is that it is better to teach people to take care of themselves rath-er than take care of people. ~ anon

There is something inher-ently wrong about what hap-pened in Belize on Mothers’ Day 2014. Inherently wrong because it would be wrong re-gardless of which political party chose to engage in that type of partisan political patronage. It was into public funds that the Prime Minister went to with-draw and distribute $850,000 to give to his 17 area repre-sentatives. Seventeen means that dishonorable Elvin Penner was among those who received $50,000 to give out to their party loyalists. According to a Channel Five news story, “This wasn’t party money drawn from the coffers of the U.D.P. or from the pockets of the area reps. The eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars came out of public funds, giv-en to them by the Ministry of Finance.”

The biggest problem here is that what Dean Barrow is doing sets a dangerous precedent. If the United Democratic Party is allowed to use public funds to patronize and reward its supporters with no objections raised, then any subsequent administration will feel justi-fied in doing the same. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. I speak specifical-ly to master hypocrite Godwin Hulse who vehemently object-

ed to such programs in the past; even when they were not nearly as extravagant and blatant. As a “member of the team” of course, he sees things differently. The fact that names of recipients are published means nothing. Check those names and you will find that they are all UDP supporters.

If this money was indeed dis-tributed equitably to poor and needy mothers, it would not be so bad. You can be sure however, that this went only to party faith-ful. Political parties keep a run-ning list of voters and they know exactly their loyal supporters are.

They also know who are staunch-ly on the other side of the aisle. Those who do not wave a party flag need not apply whenever goods and services are delivered.

A similar program was car-ried out last Christmas. That time however, even caretakers were included. This is a blatant misuse of public funds. It is a known fact that a full 82% of the govern-ment revenues come from tax-es. The ones most heavily taxed and the ones least likely to benefit from any tax relief are those identified as b e l o n g i n g to the op-position. It is obvious then that while mem-bers of the o p p o s i t i o n carry the heaviest tax burden, they are not even cons idered for any such programs or giveaways.

It makes no difference to pol-iticians that this type of “handout gutter politics” does in no way help to move our nation forward. It promotes a beggar mentality and makes work-shy loafers out of otherwise potentially productive citizens. While constructive self-help programs would much bet-ter fill the needs of alms seekers, such programs would obviously not serve to massage the egos of politicians and would not forward their agenda of keeping the peo-ple in perpetual subjugation.

There are those who have sug-gested that it was the PUP who started this whole handout busi-ness with the Wednesday Clinic phenomenon. Wednesday Clin-ics were initially set up to allow voters’ access to their represen-tatives and to allow these repre-sentatives to interact and to listen to their constituents. Many peo-ple have legitimate concerns but those people are now sent to Bel-

mopan while the clinics are used to dispense handouts. The Clinics have taken on a whole new mean-ing and exist primarily to keep the entitlement junkies happy.

In an interview on Tuesday, Pat-rick Faber revealed that the annu-al rally for teachers would have to be cancelled because they could not afford the cost. According to Faber, it would cost $116,000 to bus teachers from across the na-

tion to a central location where they are shown appreciation for their hard work. This could not be done this year, said Faber, because the teachers are expected to put up a third of the cost. The teachers are saying that they just cannot af-ford it. Teachers have still not been given their much delayed cost of living adjustment and anyone who has had to buy groceries lately, will know how much cost of living has really gone up. And why must teach-ers be the ones to pay if they are being honored?

There are hundreds of other purposes that this mon-ey could have been used for. There are too many children going to school hungry and way too many who can’t afford to go at all. This money could have gone a long way in helping to establish a feeding program at one of our schools. Our hos-

pitals are lacking basic necessities and our se-curity forces lack equip-ment. While the city is seeing some streets be-ing cemented, there are still many people living in deplorable conditions; ask Darrel Bradley!

Of course, it mat-ters not how many peo-ple object or condemn this misappropriation of our tax dollars; it is

Barrow’s will that will be done. The Prime Minister has gotten to a point where he believes that he can do whatever he wants to and damn who wants to. This is dangerous and it is sewing the seed of discontent and serious civil disobedience. The natives are getting restless and Mr. Barrow would do well to heed the cry of the people. Stop taking us for fools!
