School Journey Year 6 had a fantastic week on the school journey where we got up to all manner of things. The children got to try orienteering, shelter building and archery amongst other activities. The staff who went on the trip agree that the children represented our school brilliantly and I know they all thoroughly enjoyed the school journey and wished we could go back!

The cheetah is the fastest land

reach a top speed of around

Thank you to all parents who attended our parents’ consultation evenings; this was a good opportunity for you to be
informed about your child’s progress and attainment. As you are now aware the use of ‘levels’ to report your child’s
attainment has been removed by the government.
I would like to invite you to an Assessment Meeting at Bell Lane Primary School in order to present the way in which
we now track your child’s attainment and report their progress throughout the year, in the absence of levels. This will
ensure that you are well informed in preparation for the spring and summer parents’ consultations with your child’s
teacher. This will give you greater understanding about how well your child is learning in reading, writing, mathematics
and science. We will be holding the meetings for assessment during the spring term and will provide dates nearer the
time.
Bullying is a behaviour which is openly discussed with our children and is taken very seriously when we
become aware of its occurance. Children MUST be encouraged to tell a trusted adult , parent or teacher
who is able to bring the act of bullying to the attention of Miss Wilson. We work with both the child who
is bullied and the child who is carrying out this cruel act in order for the behaviour to stop. Every child has
the right to a safe and happy day of learning at school!
In Year Six, we have been reading the book ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ as their stimulus for English lessons. Both classes had a writing competition. They had to write a newspaper article, based on the outbreak of World War Two. The prize for the best piece of writing, was a signed copy of ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’, by the famous author, John Boyne. The winner was Angelica, in 6R! Well done to you, for your excellent journalistic writing!

From October 2015, all children in Years 1 and 2 across England will be offered a flu vaccination in the form of a nasal
spray.
Flu can be a very unpleasant illness in children. Annual immunisation not only provides important protection to individual
children but also reduces the spread of flu to their families and the wider community. This aims to also protect younger
siblings, grandparents and others who are at increased risk of becoming seriously ill from flu.

Safeguarding We treat the safety of our children as our number
one priority. All staff receive appropriate training
and we are continually reviewing our policies and
procedures to ensure they are as robust as
possible. Ms Wilson is the Designated
Safeguarding Officer in school. If you have any
concerns about a child’s safety or security, please
contact her. Our Safeguarding and Child
Protection Policies are on the school website.

School Council
On Thursday 12th November 2015, the Key
Stage 2 School Council visited the Place of
Westminster. Luckily they had a full tour and
visited the House of Commons where the MPs
have their debates and Prime Minister’s
question time.
In addition, they discovered that the Houses
of Parliament are made up of three components: The Queen, the House of
Lords and the House of Commons. They learnt a lot of interesting facts that
they will share with the school during assembly.

E-Safety It has been brought to our attention that a number of children are playing 18 rated computer
games and we felt it is important to advise parents that children under 18 should not play
them. 18 certificate games have the same adult themes that you would find in 18 films. They
also depict graphic violence, adult situations and use explicit language. Whilst it is a parent’s
decision whether or not to allow their children to play these games they can cause problems
in schools where children copy the poor language or act out the violent scenes. We therefore advise caution when
deciding what game your child plays, ideally playing it yourself first.
It is really important we have emergency contact numbers for you, so please ensure you always update us on changes in telephone numbers.

Absence and requests for holiday during term-time We empathise with parents who want to take term-time leave for their children, however, it is illegal and we are
not able to support such requests.
School Attendance : All requests to take children out of school during term time for holiday purposes will be
refused. Request for absence for exceptional circumstances may be approved by the Headteacher providing they
are accompanied by supporting evidence. You will have to book an appointment with the Headteacher to discuss
this further. All children are expected to attend 190 days of school, by the government and the school. This leaves
considerable time for holiday in the remaining 175 days.
When unauthorised absences total 1 day or more, will lead to a fine issued by the local authority.
