Bell Ringer• Using your composition book:• think about a time when you went on
vacation or travelled out of town.
– How did you get there?– What did you do?– Where did you eat?– What form(s) of communication did you use?
Brainstorm: List the technology that made these events easier for you than someone who might have made this same trip 100 years ago.

NOTES: Early American
Inventions
Four major changes to American society
included…• Factory and labor
productivity.• Transportation
(including the use of the automobile).
• Communication.• Rural electrification.
Technology extended progress into all areas of American life, including neglected rural areas.
Rise of mechanization helped industries all over the united States to grow.
INVENTIONS THAT IMPROVED TRANSPORTION
• Henry Ford did not invent the
assembly line…he improved it (he gets the credit).
Henry Ford and the use of the assembly line:
• Henry Ford’s Model T
will be the U.S.’s first affordable automobile.
He calls it the “Everyman’s Car.”
Results of improved transportation brought about by
affordable automobiles:• Greater mobility.• Creation of jobs.• Growth of
transportation-related industries such as…– Road Construction, Oil,
Steel, Automobiles.• Movement from urban
to suburban areas.
Invention of the
Airplane:• On December
17, 1903 brothers, Orville
and Wilber Wright, (the
Wright Brothers) will make the
first successful powered flight.
Thomas Alva Edison “invented”
the light bulb and
mechanical uses of
electricity.
1. Electric lighting.
2. Provided Entertainment
•Development of movies (motion pictures)
Though many people will construct different types of projectors which produce moving pictures, Thomas Edison will invent the first “commercially successful” projector in 1896.
3. Improved Communication
• Increased availability of telephones. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, improving communication.
• .
Development of the radio and broadcast industry
Guglielmo Marconi invents the radio
David Sarnoff created first broadcasting station
Development of the movies (motion pictures).
• Also goes under communication as well as entertainment because of newsreels
• News played at the beginning of movies
4. Created Labor-saving products that made life easier.
Many inventions improved the lives of families and saved time
such as the refrigerator, washing machine, water pump for running water, toaster, and
electric stove.
