Essential Questions:• What are the major parts of a seed

and where are they located within the seed?

• What is the function of each major part of a dicot seed and a monocot seed?

QuickTime™ and a decompressor

are needed to see this picture.

What are the major parts of a seed? Where are they located?

• A seed is a living entity that serves as a bridge between generations of a plant.

What are the major parts of a seed? Where are they located?

• Seeds are formed in the pistil of the flower and develop from the ovule following fertilization.

What are the major parts of a seed? Where are they located?

• As the fertilized egg (zygote) grows and develops, it becomes the embryo of the seed.

What are the major parts of a seed? Where are they located?

• The embryo has the parts (roots, stem, leaf) of a complete plant.

What is the function of each major part of a seed?

• Each part of the seed has a specific function to help ensure that a healthy new plant will emerge from the seed.

What is the function of each major part of a seed?

•Seeds store food in the cotyledon to support the growth and development of the embryo.

•Dicot plants have two cotyledons in their seeds.(soybeans, peas)

•Monocot plants have one cotyledon in their seeds.(corn, lilies)

What is the function of each major part of a seed?

•The hypocotyl of the embryo plant develops into the STEM.

•The radicle is the lower end of the hypocotyl that forms the first ROOT of the plant. (The radicle is the first to emerge from the seed as germination begins.)

What is the function of each major part of a seed?

•The epicotyl above the hypocotyl develops into a pair of small LEAVES.

•The endosperm found in Monocot plants is an area holding a lot of food for the embryo.

What is the function of each major part of a seed?

•The seed coat surrounds the seed and protects it from injury and dehydration.

As Always…

Write a CER summary paragraph for your Stem Cornell notes.

Be sure to include a Claim, and support it with Evidence and Reasoning based on things that you learned today.

Exit Slip Questions

1) Name the three parts of the seed that develop into the:

Leaves, Stem, and Roots

2) What is the major difference between monocot seeds and dicot seeds?
