• Directions: Reflect on each of the articles. For each article, list the title and answer the question: Did this change my ideas about success and what it means to me? Why or why not?

• How Children Succeed: Explained the importance of grit and determination in success. We learned that G.P.A.’s are a better indication of a student’s ability to succeed than the ACT test is.

• “The Good Food Revolution”: Told the story of a former pro-basketball player who gave up his career to become a farmer in the intercity, and provide his community with fresh produce.

• “The Matthew Effect”: We learned about Canadian hockey players who are successful not because they are talented, but because of when they are born (the cut-off date for pro hockey players is January 1st)

• “New Study Destroys 10,000 Hour Rule:” Offers a counterclaim to “The 10,000 Hour Rule,” saying that practice really only makes a difference in areas like sports or music, which have stable structures where the rules never change.

• “The Secret Fears of the Rich”: Explains why many rich people are unhappy – they feel isolated from others and worry constantly about losing their fortunes.

• Your Success Interview: The interview you conducted with someone over 18 years old about their success.

Claims Review your claim and make sure…

You clearly state: “My definition of success is ______, because…”

Your claim summarizes (and can be connected to) your own personal experiences, your observations, and the articles/stories we have read in class.

Page 15: BELL RINGERS AND SLIDES Week of 4.27.15 – 5.1.15

Example CLAIM:

My definition of success is becoming rich and owning a business, because people only respect and listen to others who are wealthy.

Personal experience:

Once I got a job and could pay for dates with girls, I had more success in these relationships and they all seemed to like me more.

Observations:

My father, who I interviewed for our class assignment, said he found success when he was able to afford to buy his first house, because then others respected him more.

Articles from class:

In class we read an article that talked about how lonely rich people were; however, in my experience this is not true. Rich people are usually surrounded by happiness and good times.

You can use text to support what you say, or you can argue against them if they don’t fit with your own experiences

Page 16: BELL RINGERS AND SLIDES Week of 4.27.15 – 5.1.15

Reflection YES or NO –

Did you meet our class writing goal today? If not, how can you use your time (either at home, or in class tomorrow) to make sure you continue making progress?
