Tennessee SPI Objective:Analyze data on levels of variation within a population to make predictions about survival under particular environmental conditions.

Notes Science

Essential LearningStudents will predict which sub-group(s) in a population are best suited to survive under specific environmental conditions.

Essential QuestionWhat is the connection between variation within apopulation and the sub-group(s) survival rate?

Notes Science

1) Variation refers to a variety or diversity of traits (different kinds) within any given population of organisms.

Example: Look around at the other students. Notice the unique traits that individuals have such as hair color, height, eye color, skin color, etc.

2) Likewise variations occur in nature in populations of plants, animals, insects, fish, etc.

Variation in Populations

This is an example of variation within the student population

Look at the picture below of the 5 dogs. They all belong to the same species (Canis Familiaris). Notice the variety of traits (different kinds).

2) The process that drives variation…

3) Changes and variation result from…

4) Changes and variation also result from…

…sexual reproduction (over many generations) and changes in the environment

…genetic mutations (over many generations)and changes in the environment

… is called natural selection

organisms must change (adapt) by either changing their behavior or changing their body structure or both.

Notes Science

1) When environmental changes occur…
