Working for Bellevue

Welcome to the Bellevue-Offutt com-munity and the greater metropolitan area of Sarpy and Douglas counties — one of the best places in Nebraska to live, work and to raise a family.

The Bellevue-Offutt community is an eclectic mix of retail business, military, defense industry, banking, health care, education and food service with a sprinkling of entrepreneurial diversity thrown in for good measure — all working together for the common good.

The Bellevue Chamber of Commerce understands that in order to have a strong economic environment, you must have a strong community that supports and encour-ages growth and innovative thinking. We are truly blessed in Bellevue to have leaders, business owners, educators and a wealth of private citizens who recognize that we all share in the responsibility of creating eco-nomic success and stability as well as a healthy community environment for our children and future generations.

For the past 53 years, the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce has diligently worked to fulfill the mission to create, enhance and promote the economic environment, employ-ment opportunities and the quality of life in our community, and to advocate and create solutions for business and community issues.

The chamber is involved in numerous projects throughout the year that benefit our community. A prime example is RiverFest, an annual summer affair that brings our commu-nity together for a regional barbecue competi-tion, family fun and festivities throughout the day, and the area's leading musical festival in the evening. The chamber sponsors Bellevue First — Bellevue Now, showcasing local businesses and restaurants. In addition, we co-sponsor a one-of-a-kind Runway Run where a 7K course includes Offutt AFB and

its runway for all participants. The chamber works with other local civic

and private groups to encourage new business development, to create awareness of problems facing our community, to develop potential solutions, to be a source of information and support for business owners, and to maintain and enhance the good that is Bellevue-Offutt community.

As the chamber’s president, I am honored to serve alongside the army of volunteers that work out front and behind the scenes to build a better Bellevue-Offutt community for all citizens. That is the uniqueness of our community. We think big picture, we work together to make things happen and we support the efforts of all.

If you are not a member of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce, please join us today. Your investment will pay big dividends in many different ways as we work together to make the Bellevue-Offutt community a better place to live, to work and to raise a family.

Sincerely, Jim RistowPresident and CEO Bellevue Chamber of Commerce

OFFUTT COMMANDER'S MESSAGE

A supportive communityWelcome to the Bellevue-Offutt Community,

home of the “Fightin’ Fifty-Fifth!”The 55th Wing provides dominant intel-

ligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; electronic attack and command and control to national leadership and warfighters across the spectrum of conflict anytime, anyplace.

The 55th Wing is the largest wing in Air Combat Command, but the wing is not the only major unit at Offutt. Offutt is home to more than 50 partner units, including U.S. Strategic Command, the Air Force Weather Agency and the Heartland of America Band. All of these units help support the Air Force’s mission to Fly, Fight and Win in air, space and cyberspace.

The base was originally founded in 1890 as an Army post and was named Fort Crook after Gen. George Crook. In 1921, the original run-way was built on the post and was named Offutt Field after Lt. Jarvis Offutt, the first air casualty from Omaha during World War I. In 1947, when the Army Air Corps was re-established as an independent service, the post became Offutt Air Force Base.

Offutt Air Force Base has always had a won-derful relationship with the local community. Even before moving to Offutt, I had heard many great things about the community, and I can assure you all of those things are true. From the annual Offutt Advisory Picnic at the Base Lake to funding the Capehart pool this past summer, the local community lives up to its reputation of being one of the best military communities. The positive support you constantly give helps us do our mission the best we can, and for that, we are

very grateful. Thank you for making all of the personnel

stationed here at Offutt feel at home. I invite you to take the opportunity to get to know these Offutt families, and we look forward to sharing more about our important mission and how our great relationship with the community helps make mission accomplishment possible.

Sincerely, Gregory M. Guillot, Colonel, USAF Commander, 55th Wing

BELLEVUE AT A GLANCELocationBellevue is located in Sarpy County, just south of Omaha in east-central Nebraska. Bellevue is bounded by the Missouri River on the east, Omaha on the north and Offutt Air Force Base on the south. Major Midwest cities are within a day’s drive or less: Kansas City, Mo., is 174 miles south on Interstate 29; Denver is 538 miles west on Interstate 80 and Chicago is 470 miles east on Interstate 80.

PoPuLationDuring the 1990s, Bellevue’s population grew nearly 48 percent. Today it is Nebraska’s third-largest city, with more than 54,000 residents, according to the latest census figures.

cLimateBellevue enjoys four seasons, each with ample opportunity for outdoor recreation. Biking, hiking, boating, swimming and fishing are popular warm-weather pastimes. At 985 feet above sea level, temperatures average from 29 degrees in January to 85 de-grees in July. You can expect an average 28.5 inches of rainfall annually and just more than 32 inches of snowfall.

major roadwaysNavigating the city is easy. The Kennedy Freeway is the primary north-south route through town. Omaha and Interstate 80 are at the northern edge; Offutt Air Force Base is at the southern edge. Fort Crook Road is an important north-south thoroughfare that runs the length of the city. Nebraska Highway 370 and Cornhusker Road are primary east-west routes through Bellevue.

AMBASSADOR OF THE YEARDorene Shermanchief of protocol at the old Strategic Air Command — retired

2532 Main StBellevue, NE [email protected]

Dorene Sherman learned her strong work ethic growing up on her family’s farm in northeast Nebraska near the South Dakota border.

Working in protocol for so many years, Sherman has quite a scrap- book full of memories of those she met who came to the base in Bellevue.

Although she is retired, she still volunteers for many metro-area

organizations. In fact, she is so busy with her volunteer work there

really isn’t time for other hobbies.“Volunteering is my hobby,” she said, and she doesn’t

see herself ever slowing down. She helps with fundraisers and events for the guilds of

the Salvation Army, Opera Omaha, the Durham Museum and Lauritzen Gardens.

She also is an organist for her church, and volunteers at the Morman Trail Center, interacting with the young missionaries and teaching them about the heritage and history of Nebraska.

“Nebraska is just a wonderful place to live,” she said.Among the many organizations with which she volun-

teers is the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce. “I just tell Doris ‘tell me what you need and I’ll do it,’” Sherman said.

Sherman is really impressed with what the Chamber staff is able to accomplish. “The Chamber is wonderful,” she said.

Sherman pointed to the RiverFest celebration, and the Chamber’s ability to organize the event with the help of hundreds of volunteers.

Sherman really understands how important those volunteers are.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDJolene RobertsHillcrest Health Services, CEO1902 Hillcrest Dr, Ste ABellevue, NE [email protected]

Jolene Roberts has had a passion of serving the aging population since she was a child.Following the example her grandmother set for her as a child, Roberts has served this part

of the community in her adult life. With a background in gerontology and social work, Roberts became the owner of Hillcrest

Care Center, now Hillcrest Health Services, in 1989.She had never run a business before taking over Hillcrest, but had spent some time as a

nursing home administrator.Today, under Roberts' guidance, Hillcrest has grown to become a network of locations and services for aging adults.Services offered by Hillcrest include senior living, hospice care, physical therapy, home care and more.Hillcrest Health Services has received many awards, including Sarpy County Chamber Small Business Award, the

Bellevue Chamber of Commerce's Silver Arrow Award and numerous others.Because of her strong leadership skills, Roberts was honored last year with admission in to the Sarpy County

Business Hall of Fame. She has also served on several community boards, including the Child Saving Institute, the Alsheimer's Association Midlands Chapter, the American Health Care Association and many others.

SILVER ARROW AWARDOffutt Collision Repair Inc.George Rybar10106 S 15th St Bellevue, NE [email protected]

After graduating from high school and spending some time in the Army George Rybar came back to Bellevue in 1977.

For a time he worked at his father’s shop, Offutt Collision Repair, not intending to stay.A Bellevue native, Rybar ended up buying OCR from his father in 1987.

At the time he took over the business it was located on Fort Crook Road across from Offutt Air Force Base.In 2002 Rybar bought the land on South 15th Street that today is home to the shop.“We easily do six times the work as our old location,” Rybar said.OCR cares about the Bellevue community and gives back in many ways, including doing its part to keep materials

out of the landfill. The company recycles as much as possible, employees sort materials for recycling and even the coffee cups used at the shop are easily recycled.

Infant car seats are something that OCR works to recycle. Once the seats have been in an accident they can't be used again. Plastic and metal parts are donated to Hands of Heartland and the fabric coverings and seat belts are donated for other uses as well. OCR also takes car seats that have been donated to Goodwill and recycles them, for safety reasons the agency can't use or resell the seats.

Active in the Chamber, Rybar volunteers and gives back to the community in many different ways, including with RiverFest, and is on the Board of Directors for the Chamber.

“I almost couldn’t imagine not being involved,” Rybar said. A founding member of the Bellevue Community Foundation, he is also active with the Offutt Advisory Committee.

LEADERSHIP — PARTNER IN EXCELLENCEBeardmore ChevroletCarey Hamilton and Brian Hamilton418 Fort Crook Road North, Suite 459Bellevue, NE [email protected]@aol.com

Bellevue has a lot to offer, especially for car buyers. Just ask Carey and Brian Hamilton, owners of Beardmore Chevrolet.

Carey is a fourth-generation car dealership owner. Together, the couple have been in the business for more than 30 years.

Maurice "Moe" Beardmore, Carey's father, started the Bellevue dealership in 1971 and had owned other locations.Carey and Brian bought their first dealership in Grand Island in 1981. They eventually sold that location, but still

have dealerships in Kearney and Bellevue. Beardmore Chevrolet is a cornerstone to the "auto row" on Fort Crook Road and along Chandler Road. Moe believed that having dealerships grouped together was beneficial for both businesses and car buyers, according

to Carey, and he encouraged other dealerships to open in Bellevue. Proud members of the community, the dealership has helped with the Fallen Warriors memorial and refurbishing of

the airmen's quarters at Offutt Air Force Base. The dealership also is active in the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce, seeing it as crucial to the success of the city."Nothing happens without someone making an effort to make things better," said Brian.

DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP ALUMNIAmanda OliverBellevue Public Schools, Director of Communications1600 Highway 370Bellevue, NE [email protected]

Amanda Oliver is very fond of Bellevue. She grew up in the city and is a proud graduate of Bellevue Public Schools. “Bellevue is home,” she said.Oliver really enjoys her work as the director of communications for the Bellevue Public

Schools. She has been with the district for more than five years. “Every day is different in this role, and I absolutely love it,”

she said.Oliver sees the Chamber as one of the school district's and the city's biggest assets. “The partnership established

between the Chamber and the Bellevue Public Schools is second to none, and I hope to continue being part of that relationship,” Oliver said.

Besides her work, Oliver volunteers for the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce or for Offutt Air Force Base events. She also volunteers with Soundz of Freedom. According to Oliver, the nonprofit organization was founded in Bellevue and supports and gives back to Wounded Warriors, the men and women who served the United States, veterans and military families in the local area.

Some of the events she has helped the Chamber with include, its Annual Banquet, Riverfest, the Veterans Parade, Operation Holiday Cheer and the Military Relations Golf Outing.

She also helps out with the Offutt Advisory Council’s Annual Picnic. When she isn’t working or volunteering, Oliver enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

Craig and Lacey Akridge, husband and wife chiropractic team, have been serving the Bellevue area since 2010 when they opened their clinic on Twin Creek Drive.

The two met while studying to become chiropractors at the Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis.

Both are from the Omaha area, and while still in chiropractic school they did some research on possible locations for their clinic.

With the city's strong community focus and a good patient-to-chiropractor ratio, they chose Bellevue as the best fit for the clinic.

As business owners, they are active members in several area chambers of commerce, including the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce. "The Chamber was instrumental in getting our business started," said Lacey. "Also, it's evident that they truly want each and every business to succeed."

A portion of the clinic's new patient revenue is donated to charity. Donations have gone to, among others, the Bellevue Heroes, Sarpy County Kiwanis and the local American Heart Association.

In 2011, the couple won the “Suburban 40 Under 40" award from the Bellevue Leader. They also volunteer their time to community groups such as Sarpy County Kiwanis.

SMALL BUSINESS — 1-15 EMPLOYEESFarrell's Extreme BodyshapingWayne Lewis2219 Capehart Rd, Ste 107Bellevue, NE [email protected]

After being a student at Farrell's Extreme Bodyshaping for several years, Wayne Lewis bought the Bellevue location in 2012. He now owns two more locations, one in La Vista and the other on West Dodge Road in Omaha.

Lewis and his staff are passionate about transforming the lives of those who walk through the doors of Farrell's. "Yes, we are a gym, we work on improving your body, but we are more than that," he said.

Staff strive to motivate clients and keep them accountable as they work to improve their overall health and helping them reach their weight loss and body fat goals.

"We are trying to make Bellevue and the entire Sarpy County the healthiest area in the metro," Lewis said.Farrell's relationship with the Chamber has been a positive partnership, according to Lewis, and he points to the

SMALL BUSINESS — 16-50 EMPLOYEESApache Camper CenterDave Sothan1120 Fort Crook Rd SBellevue, NE [email protected]

Apache Camper Center was opened in 1967 by Dave Sothan's mother in Seward where she sold Apache fold down camping trailers.

Sothan eventually started working at the business after school and on weekends, helping with sweeping, cleaning and many other tasks.

Apache grew, and Sothan became manager of the Bellevue location in 1978 when the store was at 3802 Fort Crook Rd S., eventually taking ownership of the business. In 1992 the store was moved to its present location, 1120 Fort Crook Rd S.

The business has grown since then, a location was opened in Lincoln in 1997 and plans are under way to open another location this year in Kearney.

As the company has grown, Apache has worked to meet it's customers needs. "We always look forward to the chal-lenges and offering the best service to our customers," Sothan said.

Having a growing business keeps Sothan busy, but he finds time to lend a hand for the yearly Bellevue barbecue competition at Haworth Park. Apache loans RVs to the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce to serve as cooling stations, judging areas and for the entertainers. "I think the barbecue is one of the biggest events of the year for the Bellevue community, I really enjoy participating," he said.

"The chamber has helped grow the Bellevue community into a thriving business area, and has been a big supporter to our endeavors."

With miles of paved trails, designated right-of-ways and a progressive mentality focused on trans-forming the way citizens move about, the City of Bellevue is the leading force in Nebraska regarding balanced, accessible transportation.

This commitment to balanced transportation began publically in October 2010, when the Bellevue City Council passed an ordinance declaring its intent to guide the principle of accessible, diverse and transformative transportation practices that rely less on the traditional private automobile.

The “Complete Streets” concept advocates build-ing communities that rely more on mass transporta-tion, bicycle trails and pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, rather than cars alone.

In the City of Bellevue, the Citizens Complete Streets Panel helps provide guidance and serves as a conduit for community awareness.

Affiliated with the National Complete Streets Coalition, the committee mem-bers are appointed by the mayor and are tasked with guiding the city toward the strategic goals of the ordinance.

Outcomes demonstrating the com-mitment of the city to these tenants include the 2014 City Strategic Plan outlining a three-year commitment to connect sidewalks throughout Bellevue.

The city also boasts two of the area’s best off-road mountain bike treks, at Swanson Park and Jewell Park, adding to our trail connectivity.

The city's strong commitment to balanced, diverse transit is also demonstrated by the strong partici-pation from the public.

Cycling groups, walking clubs and active individuals all take advantage of designated byways to travel to work, shop and play, making Bellevue one of the most accessible cities in the state.

BELLEVUE LIVING

This is the good lifePeople come to Bellevue for many

reasons, whether it be because of Offutt Air Force Base, the schools or their business.

But one thing is certain — Nebraska's third-largest city is very much a family community.

Residential options of various sizes and costs are available to meet the needs of the 50,000-plus population.

Rusty Hike, owner of Hike Real Estate in Bellevue, said the housing market is solid, and new construction has picked up in Sarpy County.

“Rates are still very good,” Hike said. “First-time home buyers are coming out now a little.”

There are more than a dozen sanitary improvement districts in the Bellevue area. SIDs are housing developments governed independently of the cities in which they're located.

Many neighborhoods in Bellevue have playgrounds and trails, plus schools nearby.

Hike said the schools in all of Sarpy County are a big draw for people new to the area when they're house hunting.

Lakewood Villages, just south of Nebraska Highway 370 toward the western part of the city, is home to Bellevue Public Schools' newest elementary school, Bellevue Elementary.

Neighborhoods such as Pilgrim's Landing, Hyda Hills, Two Springs and Tregaron are located in the southern part of the city. Families might find comparable homes in Sunrise or Avery Hills

Page 27: Bellevue First 2014

farther north.Olde Towne and Fontenelle Hills have

both apartments and larger single-family homes.

An apartment complex called Colonial Pointe at Fairview, at Highway 75 and Fairview Road, was completed last year, Hike said.

But apartment vacancies, and even rental houses, can be hard to come by in Bellevue.

“The rental market is very strong,” Hike said.

Tregaron Woods offers a more luxurious housing option tucked away in forested

hills. Although a small development, Hike said it has seen more activity recently, with three sales after the lots remained idle for quite some time.

He said one of the biggest factors in Bellevue's attraction to new residents is its accessibility to the rest of the metropolitan area.

“Bellevue is very easily accessible,” Hike said.

Highway 75 into Omaha is a huge advan-tage, he said, and the Highway 34 corridor will increase access and potential development.

Bellevue also prides itself on its senior residences. They provide a supporting envi-ronment with activities and care for the aging population.

The award-winning Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home is located off Capehart Road, a short distance from Offutt.

Hillcrest Health Services, headquartered in Bellevue, continues to expand its senior living options. From Victoria Gardens to

Mable Rose Estates assisted living, Hillcrest has facilities that offer a range of services. Plus, just west in Papillion is Hillcrest Country Estates, a retirement community with various levels of senior care.

At the corner of Cornhusker and Fort Crook roads sits Richmont Village, independent-living apartments for seniors. Harmony Court provides a similar environment with its Wall Street facility.

Also along Fort Crook Road is Heritage Ridge Retirement Community, which offers transitional senior care — indepen-dent living, assisted living and memory support.

Whether you're a first-time homeowner or recently re-tired, you're sure to find a place to call your own in Bellevue.

BELLEVUE HEALTH CARE

Get healthy in BellevueBellevue's got you covered when it

comes to obtaining — and maintaining — a healthy life.

There may be changes to health insur-ance, practices and technology, but what hasn't changed is the number of places in Bellevue for people to receive quality health care. In fact, the options continue to grow.

Since the 2010 opening of Bellevue Medical Center, the city's first public hospi-tal, services have been added, awards have been given and more programs for engaging the community have been developed.

“Dedicated to a healthier you,” the hospital slogan, is demonstrated daily through treatment and education.

Bellevue Medical Center has more than 300 physicians credentialed in 30 specialties. The hospital is an accredited chest pain center and primary stroke center, plus a destination for cancer patients to receive treatment.

BMC is often booming with babies, too. It serves expectant mothers not only from Bellevue but from nearby communities.

Alegent Creighton Midlands Hospital closed its obstetrics unit last year due to lower demand. To keep down costs and improve efficiency, the Alegent Creighton health system has been looking for ways to consolidate services at its five metro-politan hospitals.

Alegent Creighton also operates a clinic in Bellevue on Samson Way, which offers family medicine, pediatrics, Express Care and more. There are several specialty medical offices in

Bellevue is also headquarters for the ever-growing Hillcrest Health Services. From assisted living to physical therapy and inpatient rehabilita-tion, Hillcrest serves the needs of all stages of the aging population. From minor, short-term rehab to long-term, in-home care, your loved ones are in good hands with Hillcrest.

For urgent but less critical conditions, Bellevue medical professionals are ready and waiting. Bellevue Urgent Care on Harlan Drive is a walk-in clinic for non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries.

Bellevue: Explore Nebraska’s birthplaceThere was a time when

present-day Bellevue was little more than open prairie and woodland. Less than 20 years had gone by since the Lewis and Clark Expedition had passed and returned through the area.

Native Americans, members of the Otoe and Omaha tribes, lived near the Missouri River and Papillion Creek. A fur-trading post operated by Joshua Pilcher was not much more than a dot on the overall landscape.

The year was 1822, about as early as Bellevue can concretely trace its origins as the oldest permanent settlement in Nebraska.

As a result of its connection with the Missouri River, Bellevue experienced the first of many of its booms by the 1830s.

The fur trade was flourishing, and Bellevue served as a point of embarkation for goods en route to St. Louis and a springboard for many traders and trappers headed westward.

Spurred by the growth, fur trader and perhaps Bellevue’s best candidate for city father, Lucien Fontenelle, built a larger trading post in 1832, selling the former location to the federal govern-ment for use as the Missouri River Indian Agency or Bellevue Agency. Following the death of Lucien in 1840, his son, Logan, returned to the territory and served as an interpreter for the U.S. Government. Logan’s mother was a daughter of Chief Big Elk of the Omaha, and Logan would eventually become chief himself in 1853.

Above: A photo from the Sarpy Coutny centennial celebration held in 1957. The Bellevueites in the photo dressed up in 1857 period clothing during the event. The “oldest town south of the border” refers to Bellevue after Sarpy County formed following its split from Douglas County.

Logan Fontenelle also worked for Peter Sarpy, a businessman and fer-ryboat operator. Sarpy brought scores of people across the Missouri River on their journey to the open west, including fortune seekers during the California gold rush and Mormons en route to Utah.

In an effort to have people stay, he also aided in establishing the Bellevue Town Company, with the town officially organizing in late 1856.

representation. Again a first, Bellevue originally served as the new county seat. The courthouse, also remembered as Fontenelle Bank, still stands and is available for historical tours.

Two major factors propelled Bellevue from its fur-trading days into a 21st century city.

Bellevue College, a four-year university for men and women, opened in the fall of 1883. The sec-ond element was the commissioning of Fort Crook by the War Department in 1890, with construction taking place between 1894 and 1896. Named after the late Gen. George Crook, the fort played an important role during the Spanish-American War.

With the coming of the Second World War, Fort Crook, situated safely in the middle of the heart-land, was selected as a site for the Martin Bomber Plant.

Thousands of bombers were produced here during the war, including the Enola Gay and Bockscar, the planes used to drop the atomic bombs near the end of World War II.

Fort Crook was re-designated Offutt Air Force Base, after a World War I pilot killed in France. It took on a new set of challenges contesting Cold War threats and served as headquarters of Strategic Air Command from 1948 to 1992.

A vintage scene from Fort Crook, now known as Offutt Air Force Base.

27 YEARS OF QUALITY, INTEGRITY AND SERVICE

Today, Offutt Air Force Base is home to the 55th Wing, Air Force Weather Agency and United States Strategic Command.

From its humble beginnings as a cluster of buildings as-sociated with a trading post to third- largest city in Nebraska and significant economic player, Bellevue has been on a remarkable journey.

It has been one with not only just a rich local history, but one that is intertwined with history on a national and even international scale. Most of all, the history is something we should be proud of.

— Ben Justman

Avenue of Flags

With American flags going up in mid-May and flying until mid-November, some of Bellevue’s main streets are transformed into Bellevue’s Avenue of Flags.

Since 1999, the American flags, thanks to the generosity of donors, have been flown proudly along Mission Avenue and Franklin Street in Olde Towne and also along Galvin Road.

Over the years, The Avenue of Flags has continued to expand west along Highway 370.

The number of flags have fluctuated each year, directly reflecting the level of participation of business and community mem-bers of Bellevue.

Organized by the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce, and pulled off by many volunteers, this yearly patriotic display is in honor of current service members and veterans of the United States military.

Many of the flags need to be replaced each year due to wear and tear from the elements, with only about 10 percent of the flags lasting longer than one year. Even some of the poles need to be re-placed. Each year replacement hardware must be ordered, too.

To help sponsor the flags, the donation is $60 per flag.

Make checks payable to the Bellevue Economic Enhancement Foundation. Donations can be dropped off at the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce office or mailed to B.E.E.F., 1102 Galvin Road South, Bellevue, NE 68005.

For more information about the program contact the chamber of commerce at 402-898-3000 or visit www.bellevuenebraska.com.

Founded in 1913, FNA is one of Nebraska’s oldest conservation organizations and one of the largest private nature centers in the United States. The properties encompass nearly 2,000 acres of forest, prairie, waterways and wetlands along the Missouri River in the geographically significant Loess Hills.

Fontenelle Forest Nature Center is designated as a National Natural Landmark with the U.S. Department of the Interior and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Notable historic sites that are located within FNA properties include more than 70 Nebraska Phase Indian lodge sites; the trading post of Manual Lisa and Lucien Fontenelle; and a portion of the Mormon Trail.

There is also reference in the journals of Meriwether Lewis and

William Clark to a five-day en-campment along the Missouri River, which is widely held to be located in Fontenelle Forest.

More than 90,000 visitors walk FNA paths each year, including nearly 30,000 children and adults who participate in environmental education courses. The 26 miles of main-tained trails and the mile-long barrier-free boardwalk allow

visitors to enjoy the beauty of the ever-changing natural setting.

FNA marked its 100th year in 2013, visit www.fontenelle100.com to read stories and see photos of the memories that were shared by those who have visited Fontenelle.

Hungry?Your first stop should be in Bellevue

Let’s face it, America is a melting pot of cultures.

And Bellevue offers a variety of flavors and cuisines from around the globe.

American cuisine has changed over the years, but many eateries, pubs, casual dining and fast food options have it covered.

There are even some great barbecue establishments, too.

And there are plenty of pizza places to suit a variety of tastes.

But if your mood is for something south of the border, there are several restaurants offering Mexican fare.

Or, if something with an Asian flair is what you’re craving, there are plenty of establishments from which to choose.

Hosting an event? Look no further than the city limits to find a caterer.

Don’t forget those pastries for the office or the cake for the special birthday or wedding. There are several bakeries in the city, too.

No matter where your taste buds want to take you, Bellevue restaurants can satisfy.

The Bellevue Little Theatre, 203 West Mission Avenue, has been entertaining audiences for more than four decades.

The marquee changes several times each year with announcements of the latest comedy, drama or musical playing on its revolving stage.

Sarpy County’s only performing arts center, the theater continues to thrive. During its first eight years, productions were held in restaurants, schools and at Bellevue University.

In 1977, the board purchased and renovated the 244-seat 1940s Roxy Movie Theater building. In 1992, the adjacent building was purchased to serve as dressing rooms.

The thrift shop/reservation center, which is more than 20 years old, is operated with an all-volunteer staff and is currently located in the theater building.

Support from the Midlands Community Foundation and Bellevue Little Theatre patrons, and recent support of the Theatres of the Midlands, has provided state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems, as well as interior and exterior renovations to the stage, proscenium, lobby and marquee.

In late August of 2013, a group of Bellevue city officials, city council members and the president of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce got into a van early in the morning and headed for Manhattan, Kan., to tour a hotel and convention center.

They were on the road to see an example of a facility that was similar to their vision that would fill the needs of the growing Bellevue community.

The City and the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce have worked diligently together to address a community need for a modern, appropriately-sized meeting and event facility paired with a high quality hotel with both located near high quality business, profes-sional and medical offices where community members can gather for a variety of business, community and individual activities.

After touring numerous similar facilities throughout the region and months of negotiation and hard work between the City of Bellevue, the Bellevue Chamber

of Commerce and the developers of the project, that vision is nearing reality.

In late February of 2014, the Bellevue City Council approved the agreements needed for a hotel and convention center to be built in Bellevue.

This project will be built along Raynor Parkway in the Twin Creek area of Bellevue, which is north of the 36th Street and Highway 370 intersection. Marcus Theater is just to the south and Culver’s is directly east of the development.

The Conference Center will be able to seat up to 1,000 people in the main ballroom.

This 25,000-square-foot area can be separated to serve several smaller meetings or receptions and will have modern audio/visual equipment available.

The City has entered in to an agreement with Kinseth Hospitality Group of Lamar, Iowa, to man-age and operate the conference center.

The Kinseth Group has a proven record of operating similar facilities in the region.

“Kinseth has done their homework. They know there is a need in this area for such a venue, and they know there is money to be made here in Bellevue,” said City Council President Kathy Saniuk.

Marriott International, Inc. has given franchise approval for a 124-room Courtyard by Marriott to be

part of the development. The hotel has a projected cost of $15 million.

The City has budgeted $8 million for development of the conference and event center, with the project cost

financed by a bond issue that will be covered by the anticipated increase in revenue from sales tax, property tax and lodging tax that the facility will generate.

This will be a one-of-a-kind regional community meeting facility with convenient, high quality lodging, offices and related services that will meet important needs of the citizens of Bellevue.

The hotel and convention center has the potential to create significant commercial synergies with businesses in Twin Creek Village and other areas of Bellevue.

The project will also be of value to the various military commands located at Offutt Air Force Base — StratCom, the Air Force Weather Agency, the Joint POW-MIA Accounting Command National Forensics Lab and the Air Force 55th Wing — by serving their needs for modern meeting space in close proximity to the base.

Councilwoman Carol Blood stressed that the key factor in a successful public-private partnership is a municipality with the political will and leadership to move forward with the intended project.

President Jim Ristow is excited about having this kind of facility in Bellevue and impressed with the team

effort that is making the project a reality.“We were all able to work together through all of the

details to see this project come to fruition,” he said.According to Ristow, the project will set precedents

for future development in the city and demonstrates its proactive nature regarding economic development.

As a result of the proposed development, businesses are looking to move into the Twin Creek Village area and existing businesses are pursuing expansion and other improvements.

For example, an extensive remodeling of the Marcus Twin Creek Cinema has been announced that will include upgrades to the theater seating, and the ad-dition of Big Screen Bistros, a Take Five Lounge and Zaffiro’s Express.

Mayor Rita Sanders believes the conference/events center combined with this unique theater experience, as well as the dining and shopping options that are developing in the area, will increase the number of visitors to the community.

Final planning and design of the conference and event center is under way.

Construction is expected to begin in August of 2014, and will take about a year to complete.

Working together gets the job done faster and more efficiently, and in early 2014 two local community foundations merged to make Bellevue a safer place.

The Bellevue Police Community Foundation and the Bellevue Fire and Rescue Foundation joined forces to create the Bellevue Public Safety Foundation.

BPSF is dedicated to providing the Bellevue Police, Fire and Rescue departments with the supplemental resources needed to enhance the quality of life of all Bellevue residents and com-munity members.

Margaret Stamp, who was on the board of directors of both foundations, said that because many of the safety goals of both organizations overlapped, it made sense to combine.

“By merging the two foundations, we will better be able to use our resources to serve all the safety needs of Bellevue,” said Stamp, secretary of the BPSF.

The new foundation will host several signature

BPSF president Carol Blood said the board members will also lend their expertise to local nonprofit organizations in fields such as grant writing, business management and fund raising.

“Each of our board members has volun-teered their time, talents or treasure to share with not only our foundation, but with anyone in the commu-nity looking to make Bellevue a safer place to live,” Blood said.

Green Bellevue has worked on a broad range of initiatives over the last four years, but none more pressing than its effort to increase recycling.

From tree planting to highway cleanups, the environmental nonprofit has been passionate about keeping Bellevue beautiful. It’s only natural, then, that because the Sarpy County Landfill is nearing capacity, the group is focusing its energy on ways to eliminate waste.

Once the landfill is full, trash from Bellevue and other Sarpy County communities will be hauled to David City, home to a landfill owned by Waste Connections. The City of Bellevue has a contract with Papillion Sanitation, a Waste Connections company, for hauling trash, recycling and yard waste.

“Lighten the Load to the Landfill” is a slogan Green Bellevue has been using as it works on strategies to increase recycling in Bellevue.

Hauling trash 60 miles in semi- trailers will increase fuel and transporta-tion costs, and add to fuel emissions, said Green Bellevue President Don Preister. Recyclables, on the other hand, stay close to home, thanks to Firstar Fiber in Omaha.

The recycling company did a study about a year ago in which volunteers went down a grocery store aisle to note

the different kinds of food containers. What they learned could make a big difference in truckloads to David City.

“Just about every container in that aisle is able to be recycled,” Preister said.

Ruth Richter, Green Bellevue vice presi-dent, said Bellevue’s recycling rate is far below the national average.

The recycling rate is the amount of recycling divided by the total amount of waste. Bellevue’s residential recycling rate in 2013 was only 8 percent, Richter said. That number jumps to about 25 percent when yard waste is included, but yard waste is required to be separated from trash for weekly resi-dential pickup.

Richter said getting people to take advan-tage of the program already in place could greatly increase the city’s recycling rate.

Similarly, Preister said residents need to understand that recycling is easy and convenient.

“I think the education component is real key here,” he said.

Preister said people haven’t gotten the message that it is important to recycle.

“In the long run, it’s cheaper and better for the community,” he said.

More access to recycling has been made available throughout Bellevue in the last couple of years. Starting in September 2012, recycling containers were placed in Bellevue Public Schools. By the end of the school year, more than

100 tons of recyclable material had been collected. In November, the TGB Recycling Center

opened at 211 Galvin Road N. A ribbon- cutting ceremony was held in conjunction with America Recycles Day. The dropoff center is maintained by Hands of Heartland, Inc., which started collecting recyclables in 2009. Nearly all recyclable material is accepted at the site — from plastic to paper to batteries — and taken to Firstar Fiber.

Preister said telling residents about the TGB Recycling Center, about how to get a bin at their house and about the economic effects of recycling are all steps in helping “Lighten the Load to the Landfill.”

“We’re trying to get the word out,” he said.Preister, who also is a Bellevue city council-

man, said educating businesses about the positive impact of recycling is also important.

Some businesses, such as Offutt Collision Repair, already are doing a great job of recy-cling, he said.

Richter said the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce is helping Green Bellevue reach out to more businesses, apartment complexes and churches to educate them on the benefits of participating in a recycling program.

Green Bellevue also has been promoting

another, advanced kind of recycling called terra-cycling. Like recycling, the purpose is to lessen the waste that goes to landfills. Shoes, wine bottle corks and empty pens, for example, can be dropped off at the Bellevue Public Library for repurposing.

With help from the City and Chamber, Green Bellevue has used existing events, such as RiverFest and National Night Out, as op-portunities to educate residents and dispense information about recycling.

All residents are invited to Green Bellevue’s monthly meetings. Details about the upcom-ing meeting topics are posted on the group’s website at www.greenbellevue.org.

What is TerraCycling? We’ve all heard of recycling, and people in Bellevue are do-

ing their part as evidenced by a 24 percent increase in recycling in the past two years. But have you also heard of TerraCycling? Instead of taking that closetful of old shoes to the thrift store

(which, by the way, is also a wonderful form of recycling), those shoes can be repurposed into items such as plastic containers or park benches. That’s TerraCycling, and Green Bellevue can help you plan TerraCycling Brigades that will add funds to your nonprofit organization. More than just shoes are on the Terracycle list. The wrapper from your energy bar, the cork from a wine bottle, the pen that just ran out of ink and many other personal care items are all part of the TerraCycle program.

“We have a volunteer,” said Don Preister, presi-dent of Green Bellevue, “who takes Terracycling a step farther and weaves plastic shopping bags into purses and vests.”

Recylable materials being unloaded are to be sorted, which will keep the material out

Educational opportunities get an A+ in Bellevue.

Parents who are ready to send their little ones off to preschool can choose from a number of public and private options, as well as the early childhood offerings presented by Bellevue Public Schools, Omaha Public Schools and the nearby Papillion-La Vista School District.

Bellevue is home to many award-winning elementary, middle and high schools, both public and private. Enrollment has been growing at all schools thanks in part to a booming economy in the city. Another thing that makes Bellevue-area schools attractive is

Since 2001, Walmart employees have been writing giant messages on fields near Offutt Air Force Base. In 2012, the field in the northwest corner of Highways 370 and 75 was the spot for the message, “THANK YOU FOR OUR FREEDOM,” which took about four days to create. Thirty workers, 2,500 pounds of flour and 500 wooden stakes were required for the letters to be plowed into the dirt. The message is so large, it takes up the area of 35 football fields. Here, Tim Malik, poured flour while Greg Cook marked the spot with a wooden stake as part of Walmart’s annual thanks to the military. The message at top is from 2004.

With Offutt Air Force Base – one of the largest military installations in the United States – providing great defense, perhaps it’s no surprise that the defense industry continues to prosper in the city.

In fact, the defense industry and the military are Bellevue’s largest business sector. Offutt AFB has a total economic impact of more than $2.6 billion (2010).

More than 50 defense companies do business in the Bellevue-Offutt community and employ more than 2,500 people, including Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin and McCallie Associates, among others.

Lockheed Martin, situated near Nebraska Highway 370, specializes in aeronautics, electron-ic systems, information systems, global services and space systems aeronautics.

Northrop Grumman, also near Nebraska Highway 370, is a multibillion-dollar global defense and technology company with offices throughout the world. The Bellevue office

Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.

In 1994 a group of concerned Bellevue residents were made aware by the Bellevue Ministerial Association that there was a need in the community for affordable homes for economically disadvantaged families. With the support and prayers of volunteers, Habitat for Humanity of Sarpy County became an affiliate of Habitat International in February 1996.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF SARPY COUNTY

A place to call home

Mission Statement: Habitat for Humanity International and the Sarpy County affiliate work in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses, so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God’s love and can live and grow into all that God intends.

BENEFITS OF BEING A CHAMBER MEMBER

What’s in it for me?Benefits are aplenty for Bellevue Chamber of Commerce members

Members of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce enjoy many benefits and incentives.

If you're thinking of starting a business or want to strengthen your bottom line, the chamber has it covered, from tips on manag-ing finances or putting a new business owner in contact with experts to help them connect the dots.

“We can help you from start to finish,” said Jim Ristow, president and CEO of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce.

Through marketing opportunities such as website exposure, member connection programs, business referral service and more; and business-to-business oppor-tunities such as luncheons, morning and afternoon networking gatherings, Bellevue Young Professionals group and more, the chamber works to help increase exposure of local businesses.

The chamber also acts as a resource center and offers personal assistance to benefit local businesses.

“We help them find the resources they may or may not know that are out there,” Ristow said.

Another area of help the chamber offers is business education. The chamber offers professional development training, leader-ship training and membership orientation.

The chamber can act as a liaison for a business with the city, help with business plan modeling, or point entrepreneurs to experts in financing, either through incentives, loans or the Small Business Adminstration. The staff at the chamber also is available to mentor, if that is something that is needed.

“No idea is too far-reaching for us to help launch or keep a business running,” Ristow said.

The chamber also is involved with military and government affairs. It acts as both an advocate for chamber members and

as a source of informa-tion for govern-ment and com-munity issues that directly impact local businesses.

“We are active, too, in recruiting business,” Ristow said. The chamber looks for companies that would be a good fit for Bellevue and that would fill an underserved need.

The chamber also acts as a welcome mat to the commu-nity by helping those who are new to Bellevue get introduced to the community.

“Networking has a more far-reaching benefit than people realize,” Ristow said.

And for even more networking and com-munity involvement, the chamber plays host to several community events throughout the year, including the Nebraska'a Official Veteran's Parade, Runway Run, RiverFest,
