Molecular Mass AnswersPractice Problems: Find the molecular weight of the following

molecules. Show your work! 1. NaCl = 23 +35= 58 8. Ba(OH)2 = 137+ (2x16) + (2x1)= 171

2. KOH = 56 9. C4H10 = 58

3. H2O = 18 10. CH4 = 16

4. N2 = 28 11. C12H22O11 = 342

5. C6H14 = 86 12. H2SO4 = 98

6. HCl = 36 13. SbCl3 = 228

7. SO2 = 64 14. P2O5 = 142

• EXTENSION:• Determine the molecular mass of the following

compounds. Be sure to show your work:

1. Al(NO3)3

2. Al2(SO4)3

3. 5 BaCrO4

4. NaHCO3

5. 3 Fe(NO3)3(H2O)9

• Determine the molecular mass of the following compounds. Be sure to show your work:

1. Al(NO3)3= 27+(14x3)+(16 x 9)=213 amu

2. Al2(SO4)3= (2x27)+(32x3)+(16 x 12)=342 amu

3. 5 BaCrO4= 5(137 +52 + (16 x 4))= 1265 amu

4. NaHCO3 = 23 + 1 + 12 + (16x3)=213 amu

5. 3 Fe(NO3)3(H2O)9 =

3(56 +(14x3) + (16x18) + (1x18)) = 1212 amu

Phases of Matter Unit Tuesday, October 25, 2011

• Objective: SWBAT explain how intermolecular forces affect evaporation rates.

• BR: Put the following in order of what would evaporate fastest to slowest:– Low Molecular Mass with High IF’s– Low Molecular Mass with Low IF’s– High Molecular Mass with High IF’s

• Lesson:1. Evaporation Lab

• HW: Finish Lab

Page 12: Bellringers Phases of MATTER UNIT. Phases of Matter Unit Monday, October 17, 2011 Objective: SWBAT describe the four states of matter and how it relates

Evaporation Rates

• HIGH EVAPORATION RATES will be recognized by a BIG change in temperature

• Molecules that evaporate quickly will have – LOW MOLECULAR MASS and – LOW/(WEAK) IF’s

– (remember that evaporation is an ENDOTHERMIC process and will therefore take energy AWAY from the thermometer

Page 13: Bellringers Phases of MATTER UNIT. Phases of Matter Unit Monday, October 17, 2011 Objective: SWBAT describe the four states of matter and how it relates

Evaporation Rates

• SLOW EVAPORATION RATES will be recognized by a SMALL change in temperature

• Molecules that evaporate slowlly will have – HIGH MOLECULAR MASS and – HIGH/(STRONG) IF’s

– (remember that evaporation is an ENDOTHERMIC process and will therefore take energy AWAY from the thermometer
