Phases of Matter Unit Tuesday, October 25, 2011
• Objective: SWBAT explain how intermolecular forces affect evaporation rates.
• BR: Put the following in order of what would evaporate fastest to slowest:– Low Molecular Mass with High IF’s– Low Molecular Mass with Low IF’s– High Molecular Mass with High IF’s
• Lesson:1. Evaporation Lab
• HW: Finish Lab
![Page 12: Bellringers Phases of MATTER UNIT. Phases of Matter Unit Monday, October 17, 2011 Objective: SWBAT describe the four states of matter and how it relates](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022072014/56649e7c5503460f94b7dfa3/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Evaporation Rates
• HIGH EVAPORATION RATES will be recognized by a BIG change in temperature
• Molecules that evaporate quickly will have – LOW MOLECULAR MASS and – LOW/(WEAK) IF’s
– (remember that evaporation is an ENDOTHERMIC process and will therefore take energy AWAY from the thermometer
![Page 13: Bellringers Phases of MATTER UNIT. Phases of Matter Unit Monday, October 17, 2011 Objective: SWBAT describe the four states of matter and how it relates](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022072014/56649e7c5503460f94b7dfa3/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Evaporation Rates
• SLOW EVAPORATION RATES will be recognized by a SMALL change in temperature
• Molecules that evaporate slowlly will have – HIGH MOLECULAR MASS and – HIGH/(STRONG) IF’s
– (remember that evaporation is an ENDOTHERMIC process and will therefore take energy AWAY from the thermometer
