Parents, staff and citizens of Bells, The recent school shooting in Florida has refocused Ameri-cans on the question of how to best protect children in our schools. Parents send their children to BISD schools in the morning, trusting they will return home at the end of the school day. Yet, recent events demonstrate more attention and more resources to im-proving school safety at all schools, including BISD, must be considered thoughtfully and sustained over time. BISD Board of Trustees and admin-istration strongly believe all children have the right to attend school and learn in a safe, nurturing, and loving en-vironment. Likewise, BISD em-ployees have the right to focus on EDUCATING our children in a safe workplace without wor-rying about being the last line
of defense for the physical safety of our students. Stu-dent and staff well-being is THE priority of all involved in creating and implementing safety procedures and policies in BISD! A comprehensive approach is necessary to prevent any form of school violence in BISD. We cannot construct our schools with no windows, limited en-trances, bullet proof glass and as armed fortresses; the fact is, they are large buildings with multiple entrances neces-sary for other safety reasons and numerous windows for a more conducive learning envi-ronment. An enhanced plan for an intruder must be devel-oped, practiced, and revisited often with input from our po-lice department and all law enforcement officer resources available.
The BISD Board of Trustees is carefully considering changes to best protect our students and staff. Administration has recently met with our local Police Chief and other law en-forcement officers to ensure all responsible for the safety of our students and staff are working together to formulate the most efficient plan of ac-tion. In addition, the Board of Trustees is planning to have a public forum in the near fu-ture to discuss options and gather parent and community input while considering amending current policies. Parents will be notified regard-ing the date, time, and loca-tion of this meeting. In the meantime, please trust that BISD’s priority is to protect all in attendance at BISD schools! Joe D. Moore, Supt. Bells Independent School Dis-trict
On February 12, 2018, the Bells ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to call a bond election to be held on May 5, 2018 for an amount not to exceed $8 million. This
election will allow registered voters in our community to decide on a construction/renovation plan at the high school campus to add class-rooms, science labs, a remote
college classroom, enlarge/renovate commons area and kitchen, construct new se-cured offices and entrance, enhance safety features, add modern technology and

improved infrastructure, expand working area to the agriculture shop, construct restrooms at the athletic facility and improve the softball and baseball playing surfac-es. The plan was developed and recom-mended to the Board of Trustees by a Bond Committee comprised of parents, staff, students, administra-tors and community members. The Committee spent significant time studying our current facility needs,
our growth pattern the past five years, analyzing facilities in place, reviewing reports from BISD’s finan-cial advisor and architects, analyzing past ten years of property values, and reviewing the minimal financial impact on BISD’s tax payers. With a successful bond election and a 3.5% interest rate, $8 million bond sales would result in a 2 cent per $100 value increase, costing a homeown-er with a home valued at $100,000 approximately $15.00 per year, or $1.25 per month. You will receive additional infor-
mation concerning the bond elec-tion and construction plans prior to Election Day (May 5th). BISD will pro-vide bond updates on the BISD Website under the tab “BOND ELEC-TION 2018” soon. The Board of Trustees’ goal is to educate the community on reasons for decisions and provide opportunities for input. The Board, Bond Committee, and administration feel the plan will pro-vide improved, state of the art facili-ties that all current and future BISD high school students will benefit from with minimal financial impact.

BHS Sports Medicine Club Field Trip
Page 7
On Wednesday, February 24th, the Sports Medicine Club took a field trip to the Allen Event Cen-ter. The students got the oppor-tunity to meet and talk with the Allen Americans Hockey Club Head Athletic Trainer, Bryan Parfrey. Bryan taught them valua-ble life lessons and more about the field of athletic training. The students got a chance to each ask him a question or two and also got to tour the athletic training facility, player lounge area, and locker room. Bryan talked with the students for about an hour and the student trainers were ex-cited about what they had learned. Later that evening after having dinner, the club attended the Al-
len Americans game against the Rapid City Rush. They cheered on Bryan as he entered and exited the ice and also got to high five several of the players as they came on and off the ice. Unfortunately, the group did not get to see the Allen Ameri-cans win, but Bryan had a special surprise gift for the students after the game - free prac-tice pucks with the team emblem on them! The student trainers are already talking about going on a simi-lar field trip next year and they said they
learned a lot about athletic train-ing and hockey!

Texas Reads One Book Kicks Off on April 16th
Bells Elementary school will once again be participating in Texas Reads One Book. The official kick-off will take place on April 16, 2018. BES has already ordered enough books to ensure that each child at BES has his or her own copy of The Mouse and the Motorcycle. Just like last year, families will be asked to purchase the pre-ordered copies for $5.00 each. Families may also choose to donate extra amounts in order to help cover the cost of books for those families with multiple stu-dents enrolled or who may not be able to afford the cost of the book. If any excess funds are raised, that money will be used to purchase new books for the BES library. Last year, enough money was given to cover the cost of all books, however, there were no extra funds. Mrs. Ivers hopes there will be enough money this year to purchase additional li-brary books.
Last year’s book, The Lemonade
War, also inspired our food war. BES families did an amazing job of bringing food and personal hy-giene products that were all do-nated to First United Methodist Church to be used via their Family Care Center. All BES students earned a free ice cream from the cafeteria, and the winning class, fifth grade, painted Mrs. Ivers yel-low. There will be another chal-lenge this year, what do you think it could possibly be?
Any community members wishing
to contribute to the cost of books
should contact Yalonda Ivers
at [email protected] or
call 903-965-7725. Should com-
munity members or students
from other schools wish to read
along, contact Mrs. Ivers by
March 1st . However, any orders
placed after that date will incur a
cost of $6.00 per book.

BES Celebrates Kindness
Bells Elementary designated the entire month of February as kindness month! The campus focused on treating each other with kindness, and students participated in several kindness activities. Each morning the day began with a kindness quote from Mrs. Ivers. Teachers spent time each week teaching a kindness lesson and awarding kindness hearts to students that were caught being kind. These hearts were displayed in the cafeteria for everyone to see! The fifth grade students were super excited to be taking the 28 days of kindness challenge. Each day 5th grade students chose one kind deed to focus on for the entire 28 days. As they were caught practicing that deed, teachers initialed the student’s calendar. Students that completed the 28 days of kindness received an award at the end of the month and will be recognized at the end of the year awards program. On February 12th BES students participated in Jump Rope for heart as a school wide service project. Students enjoyed kindness cookies during lunch on February 28th and signed a pledge to always be kind. Although February 28th was the last day of kindness month, Mrs. Norris reports that they plan to encourage this initiative and promote showing kindness to one another indefinitely.
On March 6th, the BHS OAP
cast and crew competed in
their first round of compettion.
They did very well and are ad-

Jump for George
On February 2nd, students at Bells Elementary School had the opportunity to “Jump for George.” Students who have “Prompt and Perfect Attendance” for the first semester were entered into a drawing within their grade level to earn cash! One student from each grade level was chosen during morning announcements. The winning student got to jump beside 100 one dollar bills. The length of each student’s jump determined the amount of money he/she got to take home. Earning this honor is no easy task. Read below the requirements for prompt and perfect attendance.
What is Prompt and Perfect Attendance? Prompt and Perfect Attendance is being at school all day, every day! The ONLY exception to this rule is when a student has a medical appointment AND brings the excuse back to school. 0 Tardies 0 Absences 0 Leave Early

Jump Rope for Heart BHS Junior Eli Norris spoke at the BES kickoff of Jump Rope for Heart. Under the leadership of Nurse Wil-
liams and Coach Kelly, BES students will be learning about heart health. During February, they helped cele-
brate the month of kindness by helping others through the American Heart As-
sociation. The BES school goal is $1,500. Should students reach the challenge
goal of raising $2,000 for the American Heart Association, Mrs. Ivers will dye
her hair “heart” red for one week. The campaign kicked off on February 12th
