We may think that luaus are just an excuse to throw a tropic-inspired party, but the luau actually has a tradition and history that dates back to the day of Hawaiian royalty. Prior to the rule of King Kamehameha II, feasts known as ‘aha’aina were celebrations of momentous events: a child’s first birthday or the return of warriors. Traditionally, men and women ate separately at these events, as required by religious custom. King Kamehameha II parted with tradition, however, and threw a feast at which men and women sat together to eat. Many believe this celebration is the historical root of the modern luau. As these celebrations became more common, they came to be known as “luaus” for the taro plant that was a popular ingredient in dishes served at the celebrations. Today, luaus are just as likely to be a general party as they are to be a specific celebration. They are characterized by foods such as poi, poke, and kalua pig. Entertainment typically includes music and dancing, so never to be outdone, please put on your best Hawaiian party attire and join us for a Belmont luau on Aug. 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for great fun, food, festive music and, yes, hula dancing! Hope to see you there. Best Regards, Mahalo, Jan Boatright Bo D. and family enjoying the Belmont Luau 2013.

The distance between you andyour loved ones seems a whole lot

shorter when you can engage invideo chats.

Whether you have family andfriends across town or across thecountry, video chat services such

as Skype make electroniccommunication more personal

than ever. Just as telephonesbrought the joy and excitement ofhearing a loved one’s voice, videochatting takes it one step further

and lets you see one another, too.Just because you’re far away

doesn’t mean you have to missout on one another’s lives.

Most newer computers havecameras built in. If yours doesn’t,

you can purchase an add-onweb-cam.

Then simply log in through acomputer, tablet or smartphone, and you can catch up with thefamily or enjoy a cup of coffeewith a friend. Imagine visiting

with a grandchild and readingthem a bedtime story, or showinga friend the craft you made. Video

chatting makes it possible, without ever leaving your favorite

chair. Give it a try!

Pass It DownWhen it comes to leaving a legacy

for your children andgrandchildren, few things couldbe better than your knowledge

and memories. Take time to createa family history, including

personal memories and anecdotes.Whether you compile it in a

written format, or an audio orvideo recording, it’s a gift that will

always be treasured.

A Paws-itive InfluenceIf you’ve ever had a pet, you knowthe special kind of joy they bring

to your life. But did you alsoknow that interacting with

animals can improve your healthand longevity? More and more

studies are proving both thepsychological and physiological

benefits of pet therapy, especiallyto the senior population.

Interacting with dogs, cats andother animals decreases blood

pressure, encourages exercise, andreduces anxiety and depression. And it’s not just the furry friendsthat provide benefits. Birds, fishand other small pets have beenshown to reduce loneliness and

encourage healthy behaviors. For example, a study at Purdue

University revealed thatAlzheimer’s patients began to eat

more nutritious foods whenaquariums were added to theirdining room. Italian research

found an increased quality of lifeand fewer cases of depressionamong seniors who had been

given canaries as opposed to thosewho had no pets.

For people who like to interactwith animals but cannot care for

one, there are volunteer programsthat arrange for pets to visit on a

regular basis.

Today Is the MostImportant Day

Finding the Motivation to ExerciseWe all understand that exercise

is important for health andwell-being. Recent research hasshown that regular exercise canstrengthen us both mentally andphysically, leading to bettermobility, reduced falls andimproved cognitive function. Most of us are committed tomaking fitness a regular part ofour daily lives but a lot ofdifferent factors affect our abilityto follow through on our goodintentions. The following tips aredesigned to help us overcomeexcuses and get started on thepath to a more physically activelifestyle:

Tip No. 1: Exercise increasesenergy—it will not make youtired all the time. Feeling tootired to exercise is a commonexcuse, but the lack of exercisemay actually be to blame. Evennormally active individuals whotake a few weeks off from exercisebegin to feel more sluggish, lethargic and unmotivated toexercise. Start standing up andmoving around more frequently, and you’ll likely feel re-energizedinstead of drained.

Tip No. 2: If you don’t use it,you lose it. Poor health is anothermajor barrier to exerciseparticipation, but not one thatyou can’t overcome. In fact, becoming more active actually

improves your health in so manyways, even if it’s ailing. Age itselfmay be considered an exercisebarrier. What you don’t use, youlose, though. So fight back andprevent some of the decline justby being physically active.

Tip No. 3: Make exercise fun.Take advantage of the fitnessactivities, support and equipmentat Belmont Village. Invite a friendto exercise with you—you’ll bemore motivated to keep the date ifyou know someone is counting onyou, and you’ll enjoy the activitymore.

Tip No. 4: Exercise one step ata time. The most common excusefor not exercising on a regularbasis is lack of time, so stopthinking of exercise as onlyplanned activities and insteadsimply try to move more all daylong. If you need a visualreminder, wear an inexpensivepedometer as a simple way tomotivate yourself to take thosesteps. Remember that all activitiescount, and doing anything isbetter than doing nothing.

We can’t change our past fitnessperformance, and we can’t alwayscontrol what tomorrow will bring, but we can make a differencetoday. By renewing ourcommitment to exercise each day,for one day, we can achieve asense of accomplishment that willcarry over to every aspect of ourlives. Don’t wait—commit to befit today.
