Combat Dry SkinAutumn often means cooler

temperatures, drier air and hottershowers. All that can lead to dry, itchy, irritated skin. Keep yourskin healthy this fall and winterby following these tips:

Use a humidifier. Tackle dryindoor air with a humidifier, aiming for 30 to 50 percenthumidity in your home.

Stay hydrated. Individual needsvary, but aim to drink at leasteight 8-ounce glasses of fluiddaily, focusing on water andavoiding caffeine, to moisturizeskin from the inside.

Take shorter, cooler showers. Hotshowers and baths will strip yourskin of moisture. Adjust to acooler water temperature, and usea moisturizing soap. Protect handswith rubber gloves when washingdishes in hot, soapy water.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! The best times tomoisturize are after bathing andbefore bed. Fight extra-dry skinwith creams, oils, salves and

ointments, focusing on places thatneed extra attention, such as yourface, neck, hands, elbows, kneesand feet. Look for soothingingredients such as aloe, olive oil, shea, coconut, mango and cocoabutter.

Be proactive. Those withsensitive skin or eczemaexperience more redness anditchiness during winter. Visit yourdermatologist, and keep up onmedications to avoid flare-ups.

IntergenerationalActivities

From Grandparents Day on theSunday after Labor Day toIntergeneration Monththroughout September, thisseason offers plenty of remindersto take some time to bond withyounger people. Whether they’reyour grandchildren, otherrelatives, friends, or communitymembers in need of a mentor, here are a few ways you canconnect with them:

Teach your grandkids yourfavorite card game or a classicgame like mahjong or chess. Inreturn, have them show you afavorite video game or fun mobileapp.

Like the song says, “Everythingold is new again.” Many in today’sgeneration are interested intraditional hobbies like sewing, knitting and gardening. If youpossess skills in these areas, offerto teach the basics.

Scent StudyTesting a person’s sense of

smell might help predict theirchances of developing Alzheimer’sdisease. A 2016 study found thatpeople who had troubleidentifying scents such asmenthol, clove, pineapple andlemon seemed to be at a higherrisk for Alzheimer’s.

The findings could lead to aninexpensive and noninvasive wayto identify those who wouldbenefit from treatment. Earlydiagnosis and intervention is veryeffective in slowing or preventingprogression of the disease, researchers say. More studies areplanned.
