Appreciating America’sMilitary

May is a month to appreciatewarmer days, sunshine and all

that comes with spring. And since1999, it’s also designated as

Military Appreciation Month, atime to formally and publicly

thank and support the men andwomen who have served or

currently serve to protect ourfreedom and liberty.

Created from the simple idea ofgathering America around its

armed forces to show gratitudeand solidarity, the month of May

was chosen because it alreadyincludes the most military-related

commemoration days: LoyaltyDay, Victory in Europe (VE) Day,

Armed Forces Day, MilitarySpouse Appreciation Day and,

most well-known, Memorial Day.

The congressional resolution forMilitary Appreciation Month calls

for a proclamation from thepresident regarding the important

role these men and women fill, but you can celebrate in your owncommunity any way you choose.

One of the easiest, yet mostmeaningful, is to offer a heartfeltthank-you to all service members,

past and present.

Remember When:Drive-In Movies

Premiering in 1933, drive-inmovie theaters grew in popularity, hitting their peak in the 1950sand capitalizing on America’s lovefor the automobile. Outdoor StrollsSpring is here! Take advantage of milder weather and go for a walk inthe fresh air. A recent large-scale study by the University of Michiganreported reduced stress levels in people who walked outside with a

group. Researchers believe that the combination of exercise, nature andsocial interaction serves as a powerful mood enhancer. People facingstressful life events, such as an illness, experienced the biggest boost;

however, going on regular outdoor walks may contribute to animproved sense of well-being, even when you’re feeling fine.

Nurse’s NotesBenefits of Exercise for Those

with DementiaExercise has been called the“fountain of youth” for itscountless health-preservingbenefits. Researchers believephysical activity also benefits

those who already have dementia.Reasons to keep active:

• Slow mental decline. Recentstudies show that exerciseseems to slow brain atrophy, especially in thehippocampus, whichinfluences memory andspatial navigation.

• Improve physical function.Movement aids flexibilityand strength. Studies showthat people with dementiaare better able to bathe, dress, and feed themselveswhen they exercise regularly.

• Reduce risk of falls. Peoplewith dementia tend to fallmore often than thosewithout dementia. Exercisecan help improve balanceand decrease fear of falling.

• Improve sleep patterns.Sleep disorders are commonamong those with dementia.Exercise can help promote abetter night’s sleep.

At Belmont Village, we offer dailyexercise classes as well as our
