Exercise –No avoiding it Minimum 30 minutes a day, with a mix of cardio and strength training. Challenge Your Brain –The best brain exercises teach you something new and are a mental stretch. Stay Social – Isolation and inactivity can lead to depression, which contributes to certain dementias. Reduce Stress – Chronic stress releases a cascade of hormones that eventually affects memory. Sleep, Sleep, Sleep – Sleep deprivation disrupts the coordinated activity of an important brain network. Be Present – Stop multi-tasking Interruptions interfere with short- and long-term memory formation and older brains have a harder time quickly switching between tasks, hence the “senior moment.” Embrace Your Spirituality – This is different for everyone, but it’s basically your values and how you connect with the world. Your spiritual side creates well-being and reduces stress. Maintain Your Purpose – We all need a reason to get up in the morning. Feeling that your life has meaning and that you’re in control fosters positive attitudes and emotions. Evaluate and Adjust – Don’t get stuck in a rut – just as with physical exercise, mental workouts have to be adjusted periodically to remain effective and interesting.

Notes From Paula’s PadMost of us know the importance

of regular exercise to keep thebody fit, but how many can say

we put equal emphasis onexercising our brains?

“It’s more important than youthink,” said Beverly Sanborn,LCSW, gerontologist and BelmontVillage VP of programs. “Just aswe build muscle strength to keepour bodies fit, we need to buildcognitive reserve to keep ourbrains fit.”

Missy the Cat StoryContinues ...

When we left Missy the Catshe and friends were flying torescue a family caught in anavalanche. Landing, theycollected digging gear and dugquickly and determinedly.Everyone sighed with reliefwhen they heard the voices oftwo little boys and father whowere dug out and unharmed.Missy, Companion, Pilot Aaronand Caleb the dog were tired butpleased the mission had beenaccomplished. They jumped inthe plane and headed for home.

Companion asked PilotAaron if they “could make a stopat the Festival Where HappyThings Happen at the End of theYear.” The little plane dipped itswings and they landed near theFestival. Walking up theydiscovered it was breathless andbeautiful inside and out. Therewere arched stained glasswindows, glistening chandeliers, exquisite chairs, tables anddelicious foods awaiting them.

Gathering around the tablethey relaxed after and enjoyedthe festivities.

“This is perfect,” saidCompanion. “It certainly is,”echoed Pilot.

After dining on a scrumptiousmeal, the little group regatheredand headed for their plane.Companion asked Missy and theothers to gather round as she hadimportant news to tell them andan important request for asurprised Missy ...

Man’s Best FriendAugust 26 is National Dog

Day. More people in the UnitedStates have dogs as pets than anyother animal. Belmont Bella hasbecome a staple member of ourCommunity family and faithfullygoes about her duties to “bepetted, loved on and to lick ahand or two.”

She knows she and other dogshelp us by lowering bloodpressure, uplifting our spirits and

improving our flexibility. (Just askBill who kneels on the floor toplay with her!)

Give her and our other visitingdogs a hug this month!

Seniors andSummer Heat

While many of us love summerweather, extreme heat isparticularly dangerous for those65 and older. Beat the heat thismonth by drinking plenty offluids, eating fruits with highwater content and avoiding theoutdoors during the hightemperatures.

When Caring Too MuchCan Hurt

Julie Ackley-Black, MPCI was touched recently by the

emotional pain a resident’s familymember shared with me. She wasstruggling to remaincompassionate and supportive ofher mother, a woman withdementia, who seemed acutelyaware of her daughter’s “buttons,”and would relentlessly push them.As obvious as the pain on her facewas the emotional pain thatpermeated the stories she shared.Although feeling very alone in herchallenge, she walks along sidemany others.

Belmont is blessed with thepresence of many altruistic teammembers and families alike.Numerous Pals have told me thattheir innate desire to help othersis what brought them to andkeeps them at Belmont, despitemany days filled with emotionaland often physical challenges. Theamazing Neighborhood Palsremain compassionate in anenvironment where the sufferingfor those with advanced dementiais continuous and unresolvable.

But when caregivers focus toomuch on the needs of otherswithout practicing self-care, onecan suffer a secondary traumaticstress (Figley, 1983), called“Compassion Fatigue.” Symptomscan include self-isolation, sleepdisturbance, depression, difficultyconcentrating, emotional lability

and mental/physical exhaustion. If you sense that you are sufferingfrom compassion fatigue, chancesare excellent that you are.

Personal attributes may place aperson at risk for experiencingcompassion fatigue: a strongidentification with helpless, suffering, or traumatized people, those who are overlyconscientious or perfectionists, orthose individuals who were taughtat an early age to care for theneeds of others before caring fortheir own needs.

Healing from compassionfatigue begins with a heightenedawareness that can reveal insightsregarding past trauma and painfulsituations that may be repeatedlyrelived within the context of yoursymptoms.

Accepting the presence ofcompassion fatigue in your lifeonly serves to validate the fact thatyou are a deeply caring individualwith an enormous capacity forfeeling and expressing empathy.Finding appropriate support andinformation, establishing healthyeating/sleeping habits, consistentexercise, journaling andparticipating in enjoyable socialactivities can make self-caresustainable. Give yourselfpermission to set personalboundaries, and share yourfeelings and needs with familyand friends. Remember, you arenot alone.

The Circle of Friends createsindividual floral arrangements.
