October is here, and with it are all the great events and activities dressed with fall colors! Last month we held the Veterans’ Photo Shoot Ceremony that commemorated the veterans in our very own building who have served our country. Appreciation and gratitude were sentiments that were expressed sincerely during that event and well after. From the soloist Francesca Sola singing the National Anthem, while being joined in by residents, to the Beverly Belles performing while food was being served, it was a well-deserved event in order to honor our residents. Next in the order of events that will definitely light up our night is the exceptional “Dancing Under the Stars” event. This event is going to be filled with great music, good food and of course the quintessential dance floor! While under the stars, we hope that inviting everyone to test out only their best moves on the dance floor will guarantee a great night full of enjoyment and good memories. I know that you can all have a great time at this event. There is nothing more enjoyable than sharing good memories with the people who you know and love, and that is exactly what we want to keep on doing. Stay tuned and look out for the Dancing Under the Stars event on Oct. 1! We’ll see you all there! Lastly, I want to remind everyone that the Club Room has new tables and chairs for card games, and that all residents are welcomed to play. We hope you enjoy! See you soon! ~ James Survey Time! This month you will be receiving the Resident and Family Satisfaction Survey in the mail. Please let us know how we are doing by filling out the survey and mailing it back.

DRCS Health Hintsby Zara Khatchatrian

Did You Know ...Over 30% of cancer could be

prevented by avoiding tobacco, alcohol, maintaining a healthydiet and physical activity.

October is breast cancer month, but cancer is a disease of aging. Aswe age, the risk of getting certaintypes of cancer such as breast, prostate, pancreatic, lung, bladderand stomach cancer increases.Due to the increase in lifeexpectancy, cancer in older adultsis becoming increasinglycommon. According to theAmerican Cancer Society, 77% ofall cancers are diagnosed inpersons age 55 and older. Some ofthe challenges in older adults fortreatment of cancer are as follows:

• Less tolerance for certaincancer treatments, includingcapacity to respond

• Other medical diagnoses inaddition to the cancer

• Cognition• Functionality, such as the

ability to perform basicactivities of daily living

• Nutrition• Social environment (access

to transportation, family, caregivers, home safetyfinances, etc.).

Older adults with cancer havespecial needs and require expertcare. Geriatric Oncologists providecomprehensive cancer care topatients over 70. To determine themost appropriate treatment planfor patients, ComprehensiveGeriatric Assessment (CGA) hasbeen developed in order to ensurea detailed view of an older adult’soverall condition, focusing onfunctional status and quality oflife. Using the CGA allowsphysicians to create an individualtreatment plan tailoring care toeach patient. In addition, CGA canhelp your physician emphasizethat advanced age alone shouldnot prevent the use of effectivecancer treatment that mayimprove quality of life.

Smoking and CancerDecades of research have

consistently established thestrong association betweentobacco use and cancers ofmany sites. Many extensivebodies of evidence have led tothe estimation that cigarettesmoking causes 30% of allcancer deaths in the UnitedStates.
