2018-19 President’s Report

Another year has sailed by since our last President’s Report — they seem to go a little quicker every year. As you will read, it has been a year full of positive and impactful opportunities for Minot State students as well as faculty and staff. The many initiatives and activities highlighted herein are simply not possible without your continued support. As a campus, we are eternally grateful for your kindness and generosity!

For the fourth consecutive fiscal year we raised over $3 million. A total of $3.28 million was raised during this most recently completed year, with the majority of those contributions earmarked for academic programs and student scholarships. Within those funds, our Annual Excellence campaign raised over $400,000 for the first time ever. We also significantly increased the percentage of Minot State faculty and staff

donating to the MSU Development Foundation, with this year’s 57% participation rate being a new record. You can learn more about overall fundraising efforts on pages 4 – 5. Another highlight was Minot State’s second annual Giving Day in April 2019, raising over $200,000 in just 24 hours — a major increase over last year’s amount thanks to the wonderful generosity of 500-plus donors! None of these successes are pos-sible without your kindness and dedication to Minot State.

Your generosity on a couple of major facility investments will also create significant enhancements that will benefit the campus for years to come. This includes the $2 million seating upgrade in the MSU Dome that is currently underway this summer. Additionally, we have just begun a fundraising campaign to make needed upgrades to the

amphitheater used for Minot State’s popular Summer Theatre program. Our tentative plans are to do the approximately $1.5 million in upgrades following the end of the Summer 2020 season. Enhancements such as those to the Dome and Summer Theatre are not typically funded by Legislative appropriations, and so your gifts and support of these projects are essential to ensuring their comple-tion. These facilities are wonderful assets for the Minot State campus and the Minot community, so we must continue to make these important investments.

We are also appreciative to the North Dakota Legislature for a supportive higher education bill that was passed during the recent 2019 Legislative Session. The new biennium that began July 1, 2019 is a more financially upbeat and positive budget climate compared to what we dealt with during the 2017-19 biennium. Your gifts and your support of Minot State University continue to be as important now as it ever has been,

and we are so thankful as you keep the campus and our students in mind. It is an exciting time in MSU’s history, and the future is certainly bright for the campus, our community, and our students!

THANK YOU for supporting Minot State and our students, for your continued interest in

our campus, and for reading this 2018-19 President’s Report. I look forward to seeing you in the months ahead at Homecoming and other campus-related events.

A LIFETIME OF GIVING can sometimes come from

the smallest gestures.

For Mary (Buchwitz) Quandt ’76, it was Minot State University’s ability to work with her unorthodox schedule while obtaining her general studies degree.

“I really do appreciate the college found a way for me to earn my degree, even though it wasn’t what I started out to do,” Quandt said. “I didn’t start out trying to earn a general studies degree, I started in the business department. I even had Miss (Doris) Slaaten as a teacher and was inspired by watching her give to Minot State. But I needed to have a full-time job and had to do night classes. There wasn’t anything wrong with a general studies degree, a little knowledge here and a little knowledge there never hurt.”

Quandt grew up close to campus and started “attending” Minot State as a five-year-old, riding her tricycle from Main Street to Old Main for piano lessons. The sense of community she felt from the University helped her to choose Minot State to continue her education.

“My sister was a music major and arranged for me to take piano lessons at the college,” she said. “It was really a community. My entire family all attended Minot State. When it was time to

7

go to college, it was reasonably priced and close to home, so I did my first year there. Then I had to go to work. I had to piecemeal my education.”

It was her humble beginnings and early struggles that formed a keen interest in giving to unique programs at Minot State. Quandt started the Minot State Emergency Fund, helping what she calls “the neediest of the needy.”

“When I started the Emergency Fund, I asked Kate (Kate Marshall, donor relations coordinator) what they did about emergencies,” she said. “There wasn’t such a fund, so we started one. I thought if I can help one person be successful, then I’ve paid my dues to society. Everyone has an emergency in their life at some point and it is really life changing. It can be a little thing, or a big thing.”

She provides financial support to the Minot State POWER Center, a support center funded by a TRIO-Student Support Services grant from the U.S. Department of Education that helps students overcome class, social, and cul-tural barriers to higher education, citing a time when lunch meant

whatever she could afford for a dime.

“When you start to think about your life, sometimes you forget how you’ve struggled,” Quandt said. “My classic exam-ple is while I was working and going to school, I would go to the cafeteria and get what I could buy for a dime and that was a cheese sandwich — two pieces of white bread and a piece of cheese — that’s what I could afford. I know other people who don’t have a lot of means today like I did back then. I was lucky, my folks focused on getting us an education, but that’s not true in every family. Some are fighting an uphill battle to go to college.”

While she now has the means to make a major difference in students’ lives, Quandt believes giving doesn’t have to only come in large quantities.

“Focus on starting early in giving and you will get a warm feeling in your heart,” she said. “It doesn’t have to be an endow-ment; it all adds up to real money. It’s not difficult to set things up. Seeing the impact of what you’ve done is very satisfying.”

Nilsen blazes her own trail by Amanda Duchsherer

9

t a time when very few women were found in STEM fields, the 2019 Golden Award honoree decided to blaze her own trail after high school and pursue a degree in the sciences.

“As a physics major, I had wonderful physics instructors, but they were all men. I was the only female physics major until my senior year,” she said. “I didn’t have a lot of women in my math classes, either.”

Nilsen decided that needed to change. When she began teaching at the high school level, she knew that encouraging women to take math and science classes was important.

“It’s about opportunity,” she said. “Mathematics has been called the gatekeeper and it really is. If you can do mathematics, it opens a lot of doors for you.”

When the high school she had been teaching at for 19 years closed, she took her own advice and opened another door.

“I decided to go back to school and get my master’s degree at Minot State,” Nilsen said. “Then,

I decided to pick up a computer science minor and get some additional credentials. That was when I got the opportunity to start teaching some college algebra classes.”

That opening eventually led to a tenure track position at the University and the ability to make an impact on even more students.

“So many of the people that I see have had their confidence mathematically bashed, so part of the battle is just helping them see themselves be successful,” she said. “It’s about building the steps and getting through one thing at a time, then taking it one step further. You try to be a model in so many ways.”

Nilsen is a role model outside of the classroom, too. She serves on a

variety of boards in the community, assists with high school speech competitions, and enjoys the art scene. She performs with the Western Plains Opera, Minot State Summer Theatre, and Mouse River Players, and has directed several productions for the Western Plains Opera Children’s Choir.

The Old Main Society member believes giving back extends to monetary donations, as well.

“My philosophy is that it’s nice to have enough money to live on, but I don’t need a lot of extra. There’s an opportunity to share and to really promote things that I find of value,” she said. “And I do value education and I do value Minot State. It’s not just about us, but who comes after us. Supporting that is just as important.”

Establishing a ScholarshipThe first step in establishing a scholarship is to determine whether you would like to establish an endowed scholarship or an annual scholarship:

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPSEndowed scholarship funds are designed to be permanent and perpetual and can be created with gifts totaling a minimum amount of $10,000 contributed in full at the outset or with an initial commitment that is added to over time until the endowment level of $10,000 is reached. The principal of the fund is invested to produce income, and an annual award is made to a student(s). The principal remains untouched, so the endowment can last into perpetuity.

ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPSAnnual scholarships can be established with an outright gift of any amount. Unlike an endowed scholarship, an annual scholarship is not a permanent fund and is awarded only as long as you (or others) choose to contribute to the fund.

As a scholarship donor, you choose the name of the scholarship as well as the criteria. The Development Foundation staff is available to help you create the criteria for your scholarship. Endowed and annual scholarships at Minot State are awarded to deserving students based upon area of interest, geographical origin, leadership potential, merit, financial need, academic achievement, or other criteria.

Typically, a selection committee carefully reviews the scholarship applications submitted by students and selects the most deserving recipient(s) based on the donor-established criteria.

Contributors of a scholarship fund are notified annually when the scholarship recipient(s) has been selected and are informed of the name, as well as the amount of the award. Recipients often write a thank you note to the donor, and in some cases, the recipient and donor are able to meet.

An epic trip

Director of International Programs Libby Claerbout, Director of Choral Activities Emerson Eads, and the Minot State University choir took a once-in-a-lifetime tour of Norway. The group worked with individuals from Skien, Minot’s Norwegian sister city, while performing in the official Syttende Mai (Norwegian Constitution Day) celebration on invitation by the Skien city council. While in Norway, the choir performed in a variety of venues, including historical stages and world-famous contemporary musical centers, learning about numerous musical traditions.

New academic offeringsMinot State University graduated its first entrepreneurship major, announced a new major set for Fall 2019 in medicinal plant chemistry, and added three criminal justice minors to

bolster its academic offerings. Garrett Weishaar became the first entrepreneurship major in December. Medicinal plant chemistry is just the second such major of its kind in the United States focusing on extraction and analysis of botanical products. The criminal justice minors in police management and investigations, law and legal studies, and offenders, risk assessment, and corrections fit perfectly in a powerhouse curriculum.

New look for DomeWhile work is expected to be completed by Aug. 15 for a major renovation at the Minot State Dome, plenty of behind-the-scenes work took place to ensure the project moved forward. In March, the Minot State University Development Foundation announced four major gifts toward the project. First International Bank & Trust, SCHEELS, First Western Bank & Trust, and Ryan Family Dealerships were honored for their donations at the University’s Alumni, Booster, and Fan Appreciation Night. Work began on the seating and renovation project in June, and there are still fund-raising opportunities, including a buy-a-seat program that includes donor names on the seat for five years, reserved seating for Minot State home events, and the donor’s name on a plaque to be displayed at the venue.

Minot State faculty and staff giving on the riseIt was another milestone year for faculty and staff giving in 2018-19.

“The staff and faculty at Minot State are very supportive of the University,” said Janna (Olson) McKechnie ’14, Minot State director of alumni and annual giving. “They give not only their time and talent, but their treasure as well. Their passions support student academics, the arts, campus initiatives, a variety of programs, and athletics. Their investment today will empower generations.”

In 2015, on campus giving sat at 29%. Through ongoing initiatives to grow faculty and staff donations, the percentage increased to 39% in 2017. The power of Giving Day helped spur the rise in giving, topping out at 50% in 2018, before another surge
