A healthy stock of standard equipment combines with expanding engineering department to meet increased demand for custom below-the-hook solutions.
This issue captures the variety of applications that are demanding below-the-hook equipment as 2016 gathers pace. From the tandem bridge lift on the cover, to the subsea project Liam Botting talks about on p3 and the
innovative concept overviewed by Tom Cox on p4, demand is varied.
Construction is healthy, as the case study about our one-over-two-over-four configuration discusses. As I said in my latest blog—view the archive at Modulift.com/blog— we used to provide a lot of lattice spreaders, suited for long, light loads where a spreader beam is deemed too short for the lift. They have hardly featured on our order book in recent years but we’ve dispatched three in the last two weeks to construction projects.
It sums up a marketplace that requires us to be dynamic as we continue to move standard product from stock, whilst expanding our engineering department in response to ongoing demand for bespoke equipment.
Our ability to deliver custom below-the-hook solutions sets us apart. Where stringent requirements of specifications or sheer scale put projects beyond other manufacturers, we’re in our element.
Enjoy Issue 3 of Below the Hook!

Modulift manufactured two custom subsea spreader beams for one of the world’s leading subsea construction companies, which is currently conducting a large-scale engineering, procurement,
installation and construction contract for EnQuest’s Kraken development. Kraken is one of the largest subsea heavy-oil field projects under development in the UK sector of the North Sea.
Modulift delivered the 303t capacity, 6.8m span spreaders to its customer on site, where the scope of work includes template and manifold installation at three drill centres.
Spreaders were used to lift the manifolds into position on stage one of the project, before going into storage for six to 12 months prior to reuse on later stages.
Liam Botting, new business development manager at Modulift, said: “This is a landmark project on which to showcase the engineering behind our new range of spreaders for subsea use. The range incorporates our drop link design to ensure the beam doesn’t have any bending force through it—other than due to self-weight—thus reducing the overall size and weight of the beam, creating a more efficient design.”
Botting added that the design features an open section to ensure that there are no issues with pressure equalisation, and that all surfaces can be covered with a high build epoxy paint suitable for subsea environments.
Before delivery, each item of equipment used on the Kraken development was required to be sent to DNV GL AS, formerly known as Det Norske Veritas AS, a global provider of knowledge for managing risk, for inspection. ■
On the Cover
Two Modulift spreader beams were integral to the reinstallation of a bridge, lowered back into position by two mobile cranes lifting in tandem.
Swiss crane rental company Senn AG used two Liebherrs, each rigged with below-the-hook equipment, to return the refurbished bridge across the Aare river in Bern, Switzerland’s capital.
Oftringen, Switzerland-based Senn is a multifaceted business, which is also a specialist in the provision of steel construction and infrastructure projects. Its scope of work for installation of the bridge in Aarwangen in the north of the city included manufacture and transportation of the steel structure.
It took four nights to remove the old bridge and four nights to put the new bridge in place. Three Senn AG professionals communicated via radio throughout the project but a comprehensive lift plan was key to safe completion of the job.
Senn chose Liebherr models LTM 1130-5.1 and LTM 1160-5.2 and two 70t Modulift spreaders from its rigging stock, which also includes a 110t and two 24t beams.
Jörg Senn, CEO, Senn AG, said: “Using the below-the-hook equipment from Modulift, we successfully completed reinstallation of the bridge during overnight shifts to the strict time schedule.” ■

One-Over-Two-Over-Four Construction Configuration
Innovation below-the-hook in lifting operations can reduce downtime and enhance safety on construction projects in urban environments, as proved by a lift in a narrow London street last December.
Safe application of tower cranes can be particularly challenging in high-rise development, which is inherently concentrated in areas where busy streets, restricted access and congested sites are prevalent. This was certainly true of a project near the famous Fleet Street in England’s capital city, where LSC Facades called Modulift engineers onto site.
A complex rigging solution was required to lift pallets from a lorry in Fetter Lane, using a tower crane that was already on the construction site. Modulift designed a one-over-two-over-four spreader beam configuration to lift four non-standard pallets for the contractor, which provides exteriors for a variety of projects, including a number of landmark public buildings.
The loads were fixed to pallets measuring approximately 3.5m x 1.5m with the heaviest weighing 950kg. The narrow street combined with the height of lift and limited visibility for the tower crane operator presented challenges. The street was not closed during the lifts but traffic was not allowed to pass during lifting operations.
Tom Cox, production supervisor, Modulift, explained that as the load was “basketed”, it had the potential to be unstable, thus, the Modulift engineering team leaned towards the one-over-two-over-four spreader beam configuration.
He said: “This configuration creates a statically determinate or balanced lift. There is limited skewing so the load is evenly distributed, which was especially important in this case given the limited dimensions we had to work with because of the narrow street and surrounding environment.”
He added: “Although it is fairly unusual to see this rig used in an urban construction scenario like this, it is a common solution for lifting sections of modular buildings. One-over-two systems are particularly commonplace in the oil and gas sector for skid lifting systems where there are four lifting points.” ■

Modulift personnel were onsite to conduct training and oversee the lifts.

New Distributors
Modulift has welcomed two new distributors in Colombia, South America and the Middle Eastern hotbed of Saudi Arabia.
Rigging specialist Green Line Colombia S.A. has become Modulift’s first official representative in South America, while Saudi Dutest Industrial Company LLC will distribute
the product range, including spreader beams, lifting beams and other equipment, throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Both have already generated widespread interest in Modulift’s two new products—the Trunnion modular and subsea modular spreader beams. ■
