The goal for Großmarkthalleplatz is to design a plaza adjacent to the Großmarkthalle, which is to be converted into a concert/event venue. Another goal is to somehow integrate this design into the future greenway plans of Köln. This design aims to utilize desire lines from a new proposed crosswalk across Bonnerstraße, and the entrance near the new tram station to create entrance axes that lead straight to the front door of the Großmarkthalle. The challenge with this is how these axes can be used for not only transporting the thousands of patrons to the venue, but how they can be used as everyday spaces? There is a formal axis that has linear rows of trees, seating, and lighting. There is also an informal axis, which has smaller intimate spaces with water features that act as the vertical element along this axis. The design integrates itself into the greenway plan with tree planting that mimic the angles of the formal axis, but the plantings become less formal the further away they get from the axis.

1st Street Station Park is a project located in California PA, a town along the Monongahela River about 20 miles south of Pittsburgh. The site is the area surrounding the California Public library, which is in a building that was previously a PA train station. The space surrounding the building is currently underutilized parking lot. This design aims to turn this space into a multifunctional place. Site ammenities being brought into the design include: redesigned streetscapes and parking, a wetland educational area, an outdoor seating area, and a terraced riverfront access area. Since the site used to be a train station and is currently a library, I wanted to bring in both of those aspects into the design. The wetland education area acts as the “library.” The outdoor seating area is to resemble the platform of a train station. The park is a key node along a greater trail system designed by a group that will be a ten-mile loop between California and Brownsville.

I was involved in this project during my summer internship at Brian S. Auman Landscape Architecture. It calls for a revitalization of Indian Park, a community park that binds the small town of Montoursville, PA together. My focus was coming up with a plan for a man-made pond on the northern end of the park. The main goal of the design was to integrate ADA fishing and trail amenities to this area of the park. This was achieved through an ADA accessible fishing dock on the northwestern corner of the pond. Around the dock, there is a new terraced planting scheme divided into four layers, ranging from wet to upland plants.

In this digital seminar, we underwent a crash course in the basics of Rhinoceros. From there, we were tasked with taking a verb, creating a form with basic lines in Rhino, then evolving that form into a landform that would provide a program to the lawn outside of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

PROJECT OVERVIEWFor this project, we were prompted to create a design within the spring creek watershed. Utilizing GIS technology, as well as ideas brought upon from famous planners like Ian McHarg, a suitability analysis took place for my idea of creating trail systems guided from the streams in the watershed. Since the idea was feasible, I decided to create a trail system that connected two small neighborhoods around state college (labeled “1” and “3” on the map) with the high biodiversity preserved lands to the north (”2” on map). Finally, a 5-year implementation plan was set in place to help increase public interest and funding, and use this design as a catalyst to create a whole web of trails throughout spring creek watershed, to help better connect people and to make them more aware of the natural beauty that is so close.

This design implementation course taught us how to convey key information to a contractor through detailed construction drawings and documentation. This includes being very clear with line weights, hierarchy, proper leader lines and dimensioning, in addition to specific construction notes like finishes and proper application processes to ensure that all design goals are met through proper construction. With this knowledge, we were tasked to design a small courtyard outside of a classroom, complete with all the proper drawings/specifications that would ensure that a contractor has everything needed to complete construction.
